Ok, so I got sucked in and bought it. Uhm....well....I'm kind of underwhelmed by it. It's basically a preview release for the full game, and ends up being just a Monster Manual for Barsoom, with little if any guidelines on making characters that are Barsoomian. (Though it would make a great creature book for Adamant's MARS as well) And there's an illustration of a Sith that I would swear is straight out of OD&D. If the ERB estate really did allow this, then they aren't all that picky about how their properties are presented after all. But, make your own judgements as to it's utility.

A preview release? What a scam. I was thinking about buying this, but based on your experience I'll have to take a pass at the moment.

Wow, that's horrible. I was lead to believe that it was a full game, especially for the price they are asking for a PDF. I apologize for misleading anybody. Just the same, I will buy a copy to see how useful it is as I am currently running an OD&D Barsoom game.

I'll try to make the best of it and find a use for it, however!

Not your fault. The information on RPGNow sure makes it look great. It's just disappointing to discover that it's not as cool as the ad, that's all.

I just wanted to chime in about this book and clear up a little bit of information about it. Shadows of a Dying World is supposed to be the "monster manual" for the forthcoming standalone ERB Mars game. This book is not a preview of that game, any more than the D&D monster manual is a preview for the players handbook. As for why we released the monster book before the core rule book: well a few reasons actually... One) it was finished first and we wanted to get it out the door, two) it could have gaming applications in D&D game beyond any specific ERB Mars themed game, three)There is a precedent for this if you know your D&D history, the AD&D Monster Manual was actually the first published of the "core books" before the Players Handbook... (not that we were striving to replicate that, it just worked out that way) This game has been in development for many years and has been rigorously playtested. Its purpose is to give rules and mechanics for the beasts of ERB's mars and if you try it out, I think you will find it does so very successfully.

Hmmmm $11.99 seems a bit steep for a pdf, of course a good hard cover is what $30 or $40 now? But its all in d20 and I already have created my own stats for the Barsoomian critters so I believe that I will pass on it. But I would like to hear how it works in your game doc.

I'm not sure how this pdf is out when Adamant's MARS, which *doesn't* directly reference ERB or his works, was delayed for some months over flak from ERB's estate. (shrugs)
Potentially interesting though I'd prefer to look at least a preview first.
I am looking forward to more in your Little Wars line, the orc title isn't really of interest to me.

(shrugs) Adamant is just about to release the Savage Worlds version of MARS. (I've got a copy on order.) Or, if you prefer: www.savagebarsoom.com/

Good luck to us all!
When GURPS was new, I started on a Barsoom treatment.
I don't know how hard it would have been for SJ Inc. to deal with ERB inc. -- but dealing with SJ was too much for me. YMMV, YMMV!
