The skull splits in half and falls lifelessly to the floor. The skulls are defeated!
As the sun rises, the pirate ship breaks off its pursuit and retreats to its magical fog.
I'll award experience in a little bit. I just have to figure it out first.
Everybody is standing on the top deck, shaken, but relieved. The captain addresses the crew and the pilgrims.
"Friends, we have faced a great evil last night, but through the grace of the divine and the skill of our able-bodied men we have survived. Many honest sailors are not so fortunate. The pirates are a plague upon these seas and they claim a thousand lives a year. However, so long as you sail upon a ship that has been to the holy island, you shall be protected from harm. We will be docking at Otiv before sundown. It is a beautiful and academic city, but it has many dangers. Please be careful while you see the sites. I would encourage you to visit the temple at least once while we are there."

The Arb Century reaches the higher-end docks of Otiv and sets down anchor. The captain addresses the pilgrims and the crew.
"I apologize for the danger we have encountered thus far. I shall go to the temple and see if I can get the priest to appeal to the governor for a stronger coast guard. In the mean time, you are all free to rest in town and see the sites before we set off the morning after tomorrow. My passangers: This town can be quite dangerous in some districts. I can send my crewmembers to serve as body guards for you if you want."
"I think I shall require some protection" says Miss Marigold. "I shall accompany you personally" answers the captain "If you don't mind me attending to some business at the temple first." "I'll go with you" Marigold says. "I wish to pray for a safe voyage." "Very good" the captain says. "How about you professor?"
"Don't worry about me" the professor says "I know this town like the inside of my glasses; as long as you do not venture west of Fraternity Road or go near 'Cub'n'Spanks' tavern, you are safe in this town. Besides, I will have Abominable with me for protection." "ABOMINABLE AM GOOD BOY!" the creature says.
"Very well" the captain says. "Mr. Horstman, Mr. Erlo, will either of you require protection?"

"Very good sir." the captain says. "Mr. Greenfriend, will you be coming to the temple as well?" "I must stay and attend to the worms" Greenfriend replies "but please be sure to put a portion of my pay into the collection basket when you get to the temple." "Certainly" the captain says.
Bim hefts his pack and smiles at the captain. "Thank you captain but I'd also like to visit the temple first. May I travel with you three?" Bim will follow the captain if he can, paying close attention to parks (Otiv Park?) or wild spaces along the way.

Rumple approaches to the group assembled in front of the Arb Century. He wears a dirty brown robe cinched with plain rope, and his hair and beard are wild and unkempt. A thick-looking man of prodigious size walks behind him, picking his nose deeply and studying carefully the results of the endeavor.
"Greetings!" Rumple calls jovially. "You can call me Rumple. This is my brother, Gim. We're looking for passage on a ship, and this ship looks good to me; the best, in fact. We're short on money, so perhaps you'd like to enlist our help as guards in exchange for the passage fee?" He pats Gim's log-shaped legs for emphasis.

"We can use a couple of hard working men" the captain says to Rumple. "Let me introduce you to Nik Horstman, Bim Erlo, and Miss Marigold. The four of us are on our way to the temple right now. Will you guide us there?"

Rumple smiles, and he means it. "Absolutely! This way." Gim blushes sheepishly at Miss Marigold, and follows in step behind Rumple, like always. "Might I ask," he calls over his shoulder, "what a few salty dogs such as yourselves want with the local temple? I'm only curious," he adds. Gim picks his nose thoughtfully, turning the question over in his mind very, very slowly.

The Captain, cringing slightly at the man's rudeness, replies "We are pilgrims on our way to the holy island, but we were attacked by heathen pirates last night. We are going to the temple to pray for a safe voyage and to see if the priest will appeal on our behalf to the governor. The piracy problem around here is deplorable, but I know that the governor won't listen to foreigners like me or to anyone below a certain societal station.

"Well, then you're in luck!" Rumple says into the air. "You're talking to a graduate of the University, and a born-and-raised native. I've seen the governor around a few times; we'll see if we can't do something about this." He continues toward the temple, with a skip in his step. Gim rolls his shoulders, then scratches the back of his massive right leg.

The great temple of Otiv can be found at the end of Theology Road. Along the way you see: Various smaller shrines dedicated to individual saints and personas of the common religion. A Dwarven temple for the worship of Ioun. An Elven temple for the worship of the elves themselves. Other smaller temples for religious minorities. Unmarked buildings which may house mystery cults. Venders selling sacred texts and holy symbols. The campus theological building. Various evangelists holding up signs and yelling at people. Sloping alleys that lead down to the catacombs.
Would you like to examine anything before going on to the main temple?

Bim will take note if he sees a shrine of St. Francis. He'd eventually like to check out the sacred texts of the vendors after the main temple visit. He'll also take care to listen to the shouting of the evangelists, listening for anything especially odd.

The Captain pauses to point something out to Bim. "Ah Bim, isn't that your patron St. Francis?" He points to a marble statue that depicts the saint with a dog by his side and a raven perched on his shoulder. The statue stands next to the steps of an elegant if somewhat rundown building with jade green windows.
A slight warmth pervades Bim's features as he gazes at the statue and building. "Yes it is captain, thank you for pointing that out! I'll be returning here before our stay is through. But I'll not hold us up. Onward!"

"Ah, Erasmus!" the Captain says "Good job. Let me introduce you to Mr. Rumple and Mr. Gim. These two men are offering their services aboard the Arb Century as guards. In light of the recent attack upon our ship, I thought it might be wise to hire more hands to protect her. I'll leave it to you to conduct a proper interview for the job and get them situated aboard the ship."

You see a tall cathedral. Many gargoyles are perched on its walls, reading their stone books while pigeons nest in their mouths. This is the temple of Otiv.
You are welcomed into the temple's comfortably furnished lobby by a young woman with a pretty face and modest clothing. The Captain beckons you to go on ahead while he talks to the receptionist about seeing the high priest.

Today's service will begin in a couple of hours. You have time to go to seek counsel or repentance from a priest or priestess, visit one of the many smaller shrines within the temple, make small talk with one of the other congregants, look around, or whatever you want to do here.
