Hi,
I'm Philippe, an almost 40 year old frenchman.
I discovered d&d through bd&d1 (red and blue boxes) but played more ad&d1 than bd&d.
I recently came across the famous philotomy's musings and other readings which sparkled my interest in od&d. I read the little brown books and the delving deeper rpg and got smacked by the freedom its simplicity and abstractness gives.
I'm currently trying to find some house rule to create very simple but evocative ways to have "specialists" for the fighter class : so simple that you can't speak of sub-classes and very easy to use or remember. By "specialists" I mean that the fighter class represents, more or less, a seasoned veteran able to fight with any combination of weapon and armor, on horseback or not. Specialists would be berserkers (sky clad celtic warrior, norse berserk, angry cimmerian), hunters (assassin, bounty hunter, scout, "primitive" or nomadic warrior) or chivalric warriors (honor or divinity bound). Rangers and paladins do exist in od&d but they fit a very small niche (was this grammatically sound ?!?) and I aim more to offer simple and interesting fighter variations than aping JRR Tolkien or others.
If I succed in trying or in finding something similar already done here, I'll try the same thing for the magic-user and cleric classes (I won't use the thief class).
Aesdana, soon to introduce his children to od&d.
[edit] d&d version errors corrected !

Hi Everyone, My name is Mark and I started playing AD&D in 1982 when I was 11 years old. I have been playing on and off since then. Sadly mostly off because I can never seem to find anyone who wants to play older versions of D&D. I have tried 3.0, 3.5, and even 4.0 D&D, but I did not care for any of those versions. My favorite version of D&D is actually Holmes. I haven't really played OD&D, although I would love to find someone playing it and give it a try. I do have a 15 year old son and ocassionally we play one of the simulacrum OD&D games, such as S&W Whitebox or Delving Deeper. Anyways I just wanted to introduce myself.

Welcome to the boards Swiftfoot & Philippe. I have found these boards to be very helpful to my understanding of OD&D and have so far been friendly. Hope you guys enjoy it here too!

Welcome, all! Phillipe, have you seen the famous pirated French version of the Holmes rules? If not, PM me--I don't speak French, but I can read enough for it to be utterly fascinating... ...and playing D&D with your kids--there's nothing quite like it!

Hello all, my name is Jeffrey and I am a recovering D&D player... Oh wait, wrong boards!
Long time RPG gamer, started with the Moldvay Basic Set many years ago, lots of time with 1e AD&D and 2e AD&D and then a lapse in my gaming. Came back with D&D 3.5, went to Pathfinder next and finally burned out on that leading me on a search for what I was looking for in gaming.
Ended up playing and running a fair amount of DCC RPG which seemed to be the gateway drug to OSR for me! Soon I was experimenting with older systems and retroclones. I am likely settling in with Swords & Wizardry, but the OD&D sensibilities certainly appeal to me!
I am active on G+, still post some over at the DCC RPG forums and even more sporadically at EN World these days. Active on twitter as well (@ir0nwolf). I post regularly to my blog, The Iron Tavern.
Looking forward to participating in this community, even if I am a latecomer to it!

Hello to everyone. My name is Gus, and I've been playing D&D since the mid-80's. Started with the Red Box, as many others did, but didn't really get into it until I was in high school and university in the 90's, using AD&D 2nd Edition. Eventually was forced into D&D 3 and 3.5, but called it quits. Recently rediscovered D&D, and have been going back and getting acquainted with the earlier versions of D&D that I missed completely and have found lots to like.

Hey there! My name is Lindsey. I know barely anything about D&D, but have started watching a ton of videos about it and am so highly interested in getting started. I just wanted to join so I could get more information about it and get a feel of how to play. =]

Hi Gentlefolk, My name is Paul. I've been playing D&D since '77. I have background doing stage improv as well as repertory theatre and love to role play. On the other hand I pay the bills working as a telecommunications engineer so I'm constantly sorting out puzzles. D&D gives me an outlet for my analytic side as well as the playful/artistic side. I'm lucky in that my early mentors killed off enough of my character to keep my from becoming overly sentimental about them but permitted a few to live long enough to give a sense of accomplishment. I have recently started developing a new campaign to run for my daughters and hope they will have as much fun playing it as I have developing it. Who knows? I may share bits of it here from time to time

I'd like to re-introduce myself, if you don't mind.
My name is Keith ... I started playing in 1978, using an odd mix of Greyhawk, the Monster Manual, and Metamorphosis Alpha.
I DM'ed 0E & 1E until 1988 or so, when the game's appeal faded.
I'm also a D&D collector, so I've spent a lot of time bothering the guys at The Acaeum.
When I joined here back in 2010 I wanted to simply explore and reminisce.
Now, my goal has changed.
My 13-yr-old son has been running a Pathfinder game for my nephew and me. Since the kids are 13-yo boys, the game is going about like you'd expect: Lots of material drawn from LOTR, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, etc. Still, it's fun, which is the whole point, right?
Anyway, since I own the LBBs I'd like to run him and my nephew through a dungeon crawl using only the LBBs. And I would welcome links to any threads to/about good dungeons, either home-brewed or one of the oldies (like JG).
I think I've piqued their interest with things like descending armor class and d6 hit points, and no flip-mat. It all seems very "mysterious" to them. Plus, I don't think I ever ran a game with just the LBBs, so I look forward to trying it.
Thanks for having me! Keith

Hello everyone!
I've been following this forum for a long time, and I finally thought it would be time for registering. My first contact with Fantasy was Ralph Bashki's "Lord of the Rings". I started gaming at age 11 with the Mentzer Red Box. I'm french and my english was less than stellar then; by first games we're full of approximations and errors when I started to GM with my little cousins and sisters. I plalyed also a lot of MERP, and a little of several french games.
I abandonned gaming at the start of my professional life when my little gaming group of friends parted, so I never tried any of the new editions. AS the forth edition gcame by , I tried to have a look at the third one (lots of cheap manueal on ebay) but found it much to rules hevy for my tastes (I think I gave up at the "Attacks of Opportunity" chapter).
Looking for more Becmites like me, I discovered the OSR and the older iterations of the rules.

Is Rafe, your ever-tired lurker. This place is probably my favorite, or second-favorite place on the web. ...Yet I am very troubled to see that it got a facelift. Imagine being gone for a few days, and your girlfriend dyed her hair without telling you. Troubling!
