It saddens me that the Elmore art is nto being well-received, though. You're not going to find many grognards who like Elmore's art, particularly his B&W stuff. He's very closely associated, rightly or wrongly, with a period in the history of TSR and D&D that marks "the beginning of the end." I myself like some individual Elmore pieces, but, overall, I find his work too sanitized and formulaic.

I guess I'm one of these Grognards who like Elmore's art, but then again, I was introduced to D&D during Elmore's years. I too find some pieces I do not particularly like (I don't care for the chicks and chainmail bikinis, personally), but some others are just masterpieces, IMHO.

Take heart. Gary Gygax's favorite FRPG artist was Larry Elmore.

Actually, the game doesn't even have the Elmore art anymore. Took it out when I did the red cover version.
