Furious with rage, Ivan screams and takes a huge overhand hack at the goblin leader. His massive strength crushes through the goblin's defense, inflicting a terrible wound on the goblin leader (8 points! holy mackerel!).
Clearly rattled, and seeing his troops decimated behind him, the leader calls off the assault. Howling his command, he breaks the shark free and starts fleeing to the north. Ivan tries a parting blow as they break away, but the shark dodges out of the way of his sword.
Beneiri kills another goblin as he turns to heed the command, while the other in the back rank breaks for the bush-line. Crater kills his wounded foe in the first line of assault, and then as the other four try to follow their leader, Calvin and Crater each manage to bring down another; only two make it away from the line and into the bush.
Your group has held the village without casualty, and now you must only determine whether you wish to pursue the three stragglers on foot or their air-shark riding leader. After that, you may re-unite and take glory in your victory!
Calvin thinks his sling-shot may have hit, but it did not bring down the rider; and Ivan's mighty-thewed haunches are insufficient to propel the giant faster than the shark can fly through the air. If the desire for revenge is to be slaked, it will be another day.
Beneiri nods at Gus' words; Rocky is roused from his fall, and the group solemnly returns to the inn. The giant wolf is found there, its body and that of the fat goblin pierced with a half-dozen arrows each. The wolf still twitches as the party arrives, but it is quickly put out of its misery.
The villagers are saddened and outraged at the death: but Beneiri, who has seen much of slaughter in his life, raises his hands in protest. "Without the generosity of these travelers, we should all have died today, I think," the amphibbos says. "Let us thank them that we yet dwell among the living; I for one will hoist a glass to life, rather than weep bitter tears at death's sting, though sting it does, and in the end must for us all."
"Hear!", cries the keep; and the assembled masses lift strong wine to their lips to leave the past behind, as men sometimes must to avoid the d**nation of memory.
Soon you are joined by the wives and sons and daughters of the district, and the fallen heroes of the village are laid out in places of honor in the square, on hastily constructed wooden biers.
After seeing to his horse, Beneiri seeks your group out again.
"You have done us well, travelers. I would see your wallets replenished and your arms polished, if nothing else; but I would also inquire about your plans for the days to come."
"Without question Sir Beneiri, the foulspawn may return. In the interest of your people and any of the other villages near at hand the menace must be put to an end. I would risk no more of your people in this, myself. I think perhaps my companions are of a similar mind."
"You're the sort of men I once rode with. Fewer and fewer in the world these days, it would seem.
"As to trackers - well - there's only one place they're likely coming from. This area's pretty well populated with farmers, and we haven't seen anything like goblins around here since my grandfather's time - truth to tell, I'm not even sure I believed in them before this.
"But there's an old ruined temple, underground, out by the seaside - haunted, people say, and most of the few who try it don't come back. If they're hiding anywhere in the region, it would have to be there - otherwise we would have heard of them.
"There's a cave a few hundred feet north of the beach where you can go in - I'll ride you out there myself, tomorrow morning, if you're so inclined."
(DM: Which apparently you are, agreeable players - let me know about any items you want the villagers to try to scare up for you, food and less expensive stuff is mostly what they have, but you can always ask for other things and see what you get.
I'll start a new thread for the trip out, we can handle this conversation and other stuff here or in OOC.)
The village has no priest, but they are honored to have Calvin preside over their dead. The disciple of Hermes heals Rocky as well, and that, in conjunction with some healing herbs the innkeeper had in reserve for emergencies, sees you all fully rested by tomorrow's departure.
