I'm in the midst of an "Oh crap, what am I getting into" moment as it gets closer to the first game of my 1E/OSRIC campaign. I've written up a player handout that I hope helps to explain what the game is about as well as a bit of how I'll approach the game. I really respect the people here, so I was hoping for an honest critique. I won't cry. Well.. maybe... docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcmsh84t_61dvb8pwtrThank you!

[reads doc] It works for me! I have to ask about "littlelings" though ... it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Why did you discard "halfling" or "hobbit"?

I can see going for something more campaign specific, but "littlelings" does seem a bit awkward to me ... maybe it sounds better in the original Kingdomese or whatever.
I suppose "the houserules for additional details" might include clarification as to what that "whatever" (i.e., languages) might be, and answers to sundry other basic setting questions.
Setting it squarely as OSRIC by default seems pretty good. There are myriad differences between that and 1st edition AD&D, and I'm sure more would come to my attention in a game with people referring to different sources. I'm waiting on a nicely printed and bound OSRIC 2, because I can't see using the PDF in play myself. Telling new players accustomed to 3E and 4E that OSRIC is "close enough" while DMing with the classic volumes might create trouble.

I like changing the standard tropes and halfling/hobbit has so much baggage. My littlelings are not going to be the standard happy-go-lucky halflings/hobbits. Oh no. They are not preciousssssss..ssssss.... Thanks for the read and the comments - did the rest of the document seem about right? Anything you think I should have added?

I can see going for something more campaign specific, but "littlelings" does seem a bit awkward to me ... maybe it sounds better in the original Kingdomese or whatever. I haven't mentioned how littlelings (and dwarves and elves) are different from the standard tropes because I've not fully formed that out yet. They are going to be different, but I'm subscribing to the "just in time" creation and going from there. Alot of this is going to be discovery based. Given that most of Mankind's efforts have been focused on survival, I have a good idea of how this will roll, but since the players are driving a lot of this, it's going to be more "fill in" than pre-plotting. I know that the bestial races speak a "bestial common" much like the civilized races speak a "common", but again, that's more of just general for now. Does that make sense? I'm glad you told me that there are differences. I don't have the 1E books (although I am on the lookout for good deals) and I figured there might be loopholes. I've printed one (and will probably print a second) copy of parts of the OSRIC (chargen and "How to Play") that would be like the "PHB" for players to use. Anything else that you would recommend I put in the handout? Was the tone too preachy or would you have a good idea coming into my game as to how I'd like it to flow?

I just had a player want to play a 'halfling' - littleling - so this is what I told him about the race. I did warn my players that things/tropes would be different in my world. Here is what I see as a littleling:
Littlelings are the "trailer trash" of the world. They're not respected, they're seen little better than the bestials, and the only reason they're "tolerated" is because they don't go out of their way to be evil in the world. However, they are seen as filthy rats. Nothing could be further from the truth - but with the Doom of Man and the retreat of the other races, very few littlelings are seen around the human lands. They're considered to be ill-mannered, disreputable, untrustworthy and generally just icky.
I told him that if he'd read Dragonlance (I know... but it was the only reference that came to mind real quick) think of gully dwarves with a bit more ill-repute and nastiness.
