Some of you who have backed Night Shift will have noted that the new system therein, O.G.R.E.S., is intended to supplant O.R.C.S. as the house system for Elf Lair Games.
An interesting development has occurred. Between running my Age of Conan game and working on completing Night Shift, I've come up with an innovation for the O.R.C.S. 2d6 system which will remove the need for the combat charts, replacing them with a basic "to hit" calculation. It was inspired by Delta's Target20 system (which also inspired Night Shift), but takes a bit of a different approach. In short, you'll roll 2d6, add weapon class (from 1-4), any ability bonus, and opponent armor class, and try to hit a target of 15.
What this means, however, is that I'm going to do a second edition of the O.R.C.S. system alongside the O.G.R.E.S. version of Spellcraft & Swordplay. I'm not sure if they'll be in the same book or separate documents at this point, but we playtested the new combat system Sunday and it worked out well after everyone got used to the shift. So for those who may have been disappointed at O.R.C.S. being supplanted by O.G.R.E.S., fear not! O.R.C.S. will survive!
