There is something wrong with you: in a world characterized by xenophobia, you dare to fraternerize with others not of your kind.
There is sonething wrong with you: in a world that has known aught but desperation, you can envision a different way of life.
There is something wrong with you: in the face of the Old Ones and humankind's fatalistic barbarism, you regard a different path as worth pursuing.
None of these facts make you noble or good per se - the status quo simply doesn't satisfy you. The reason why is up to you.
Welcome to Carcosa. You are one of 13 varieties of man, normally clannish with those colored like yourself.
You've struck out from your stagnated village with other misfits to see what you can make of yourself in this Hobbesian world where life is nasty, brutish, & short.
-for a Carcosan campaign I hope to run someday

An ancient evil plays its last ace in the hole. Good people are at risk; the evil is subtle and patient. The forces arrayed for the endgame are spectacular.

Elevator pitches are for agents and editors. It's really a New York euphemism for 'This is a complete waste of everyone's time. Why don't you go back to Iowa -- or wherever the hell you're from. You're cutting into my three-martini lunch. Beat it!'

The few humans who remained behind were as twisted and evil as the monsters. Now? We’re sailing back to reclaim what is ours! hell yeah! odyssey vibes. End game: betrayal of the capital city and realm by a ruthless duke, dabbling in the dark arts, and who should have known better. Betrayal of the duke by an even more evil and intelligent monstrous race. Duke and city dwellers sacrificed before a colossal altar - here, they are transformed into thralls of the monstrous race, replenishing the population of these fiends. Even the climate changes to suit the new masters. But, when the king is disposed, an enormous armada from an allied neighboring kingdom (clerics, fighters, and paladins and assorted allies) crusades to fight a cataclysmic battle to determine the fate of the beleaguered land.

That's the bitter residue of a quarter-century of dealing with the Manhattan-centric publishing industry. Carry on.

It's basically just analogous to LOTR. You're a lowly peasant and in several years somehow have to get the power and influence to command kingdoms and politics. The twist is that once you beat Sauron though, the Elves will wage war against you and demand they take the Silmarils! You're gonna have to pass through Valinor in order to throw the Silmarils into the Void.

Carry on. no stress man, i understand where you're coming from. i did a bid in indie poetry. the nyc crew turned out the be a vile grouping who did bad things. i just don't know a synonym for a concise and thematic paragraph. It's not literally Middle Earth, just very very disguised so the players aren't on it.

I did a post-apoc campaign with no mammals, just giant insects, and no magic, just psionics (classes were fighter/thief/assassin/monk and everybody had psionics). My rationale was psionics were caused by mutations from the radiation

In 1950, the Justice Society of America encounter four ancient kings with great mystical power. Caught off-guard, the JSA are put into a deep sleep...from which they awake, no longer on Earth, but the World of the Great Kingdom, as shared by various DMs in the 1970s. Now, imprisoned on this alien world, the heroes of Earth will contend with the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk, the Lost City of the Elders, and the Egg of Coot!

No, the PC's were human. I was inspired by the vignette in Heavy Metal with the character "Den", where the bad guys ride giant wasps

You are come to the Great City. You were raised in a backwater hamlet. The first level fighters are all reserve members of the Watch- you served your two year conscription in a border camp seeing little action but being drilled daily in camp life and basic fighting and soldiery. Now you are free to adventure but you are on call if the Great City needs you. Your magic users are all former apprentices of a wizard of high repute and who has more influence in local affairs than he likes known or the Great City really appreciates; but he is not one to trifle with, after all.
Your cleric or clerics (and Paladin) are servants of the Temple in the Great City- Or else their counterpart- subtle and quiet followers of the Old Gods, considered impious in the city by Temple patrons but most welcome in the villages and hamlets.
Any elf in your party is true Fay- almost no one who meets him or her will realize your Fay nature for every elf has a spell which lets them pass as human. City folk don’t even all believe in elves- but village and rural dwellers are all too happy to leave offerings to appease elves lest crops be blighted, plow blades be dulled, or an occasional babe be replaced with a Changeling. But beware cold iron, elf! You can come and go from Faery to this realm by way of hollow trees and mounds and pools. Dwarfs are more this-worldly- nothing so grand and mighty as a Moria but Dwarven crafts are in high demand. Dwarves have something of Faery in them but they are commonplace enough that some towns are Dwarf and Human settlements.
Now that you are come to the Great City— you are free to explore its wonders, perhaps even enter trade in its markets, or hire out as caravan guards.
But as you mingle with the people and visit the villages that lie within its pale, you are beginning to realize that the city you grew up subject to and somewhat in awe of is somewhat of a harsh master with more than a few potential enemies.... you never knew how close war and blood were to your little hamlet...
Simmering fires of oppression and resentment underlie the seemingly peaceful rule of the Great City.
Whose side will you end up on?
