I seem to have gathered that Champions of ZED is essentially a cleaned-up, and more playable, version of the Beyond This Point Be Dragons Dulluhn draft. Is that actually the case? If so, color me very interested as after getting a look at BTPBD, I am extremely intrigued and would love to give that approach a try.

OK, not really an expert, haven't seen BTPBD other than a scan of a page or two, but since no one else has answered: what I saw on the kickstarter page was that ZED is based on several sources, with a special emphasis on BTPBD.

Sorry for missing the question Jason. This: OK, not really an expert, haven't seen BTPBD other than a scan of a page or two, but since no one else has answered: what I saw on the kickstarter page was that ZED is based on several sources, with a special emphasis on BTPBD. is correct. Or rather, they way I would characterize it is to say that where BTPbD differs or offers alternative approaches to the 3lbb rules, those differences were considered and often, but not always, implemented. In some cases, we might be talking about rule clarifications, in others we might be talking about deliberately leaving out something that appears in the 3lbb's but is not in BTPbD, (like Charsima limiting #hirelings), in others we would be talking about new information, like duration of light sources. One big thing I did not emulate in ZED was the BTPbD combat system. So, in short, Champions of ZED is not a "clone" of BTPbD but is nevertheless highly reliant on it, along with other period sources, with the goal of reviving or making available forgotten but viable early approaches to the game related to it's authors.

No worries. I picked it up to see for myself. It's a solid work, certainly not what I expected. TBH, it's missing some of the aspects of BtPBD that I loved (percentile "chops" with 2d6 "instant kills" specifically), which was a disappointment, but overall I dig what's there. I'm actually torn on which of your games I like better: this or D@D. In any case, good work!
