This used to be a thing in a lot of old TSR modules. Not sure if JG or any other publishers produced 'tournament modules'?
I sort of like it in concept and find it useful and fun especially in a one shot or CON game. I have run A1 tournament style with a group and liked it.
It doesn't seem like any 'OSR' modules use this and doesn''t seem like it is currently 'in style'.
Any thoughts? Thanks

scalydemon, I know what you mean. The guy who made up Swords and Sixsiders ran a module he wrote - The Castle that Fell from the Sky - as a tournament style dungeon and he did score it. The groups at the NTRPGCON competed and one won! I’ve played it (not there) and it was great and I am now running it for my nephews! I think you could do something like that with TOTSKs. Maybe break down some of the monsters and key tricks into points and let the different groups you run it for compete. Character deaths would penalize, etc.

Some do. The main question is possibly whether or not they were written/used in a tournament context in the first place. I would argue that it's very difficult to design an adventure to successfully do double-duty (tournament and campaign usage). For example, the Gary Con Open adventures are published after the events with complete scoring system.

It’s because of Frank Mentzer. When he started the RPGA at TSR in 1981, he decided to change the way D&D tournaments worked. Prior to then they’d generally been run team against team with each team building up points based on their progress, actions, and survival rate. Early AD&D modules like C1, C2, and the A series were based on this model. Frank felt that led to too much focus on tactics and not enough on role playing (and also created issues when adventures were run more than once - in multiple slots at the same connor at multiple cons - that later players would tend to pick up more info and have s tactical advantage over earlier players, and thus tended to score higher) so he changed the format. Under the new system advancement was on an an individual basis where at the end of each round each player would read their character description and everybody would vote on who played their character best. It totally changed the shape of D&D tournament play, IMO significantly for the worse.

The problem I have with some of the tournament scoring systems I've seen is that players can get certain rewards sometimes for something built into the character that might have no bearing on player skill. For example, the thief character who picks a lock or finds a trap might get rewarded for something that the magic-user cannot even attempt.
I would be interested in seeing how some modules do scoring. I'm sure there are many examples of tournament scoring, but the only one that comes to mind offhand for me is the Judges Guild "GenCon IX" product. I'm sure there are many others and it would be neat to see how they compare.

I only know it from what I’ve read but doesn’t the annual PrinceCon game award best overall player, best tactical, roll player, etc.?

Is there a summary of what those scoring rules were or does someone know where can I find them?

princecon.orgLook at the 40+ years of “con books”. The earliest are especially interesting documents.

Reading that first conbook. Under “Experience System”, what do they mean by a character getting “pinned” and using the delta double system?
