IP Geolocation tool helps you find the approximate geographic location of an IP address along with some other useful information including ISP, TimeZone, Area Code, State etc. Enter the IP address or the host name you want to locate and press "Discover" button, your IP will be tracked in seconds depending if the information of that IP is present in our database.
IP address location information is being provided by MaxMind. The information provided by MaxMind is 99.8% accurate on a country level, 90% accurate on a state level in the US, and 81% accurate for cities in the US within a 50 kilometer radius, more details about the accuracy of location data is available at MaxMind website, if you find a location information to be incorrect then raise any queries directly with MaxMind.
So based on 90% accuracy that we are in the same state and 81% accuracy that we are in a 50 kilometer radius n the same city we are being accused.
lazylitch I am sorry I posted in your thread and messed up you getting the word out about your new setting. If I had known things like this were possible here I never would have posted in your thread.
Yeah, it's standard processing around here - because we've had problems with one particular banned poster swamping us with legions of sock puppets since last summer. - That poster used around 70 different IPs - and, in the newest twist of this nightly/early morning drama, one of them seems to match with the one used by redric. (Because annoyed and ever-grumpy moderators like myself, over time, we start doing mean things, like catalogizing IPs via Excel, and so on.)
So, I already banned user redric earlier this morning, but obviously reopened user lazylitch's thread, as it was quick, easy, and drama-free to verify his identity. (Particularly so because he was especially compliant.)
I invite user redric to do the same, although because of this new situation, I have to ask that he contacts the admin directly, and to discuss his situation with him personally if he feels like he is being wronged.
I can only repeat what I usually say in these cases:
That we even have to monitor IPs the way we do is a subject of annoyance for our entire team here.
Whatever decision we make with respect to individual users is not personal, but exclusively based on the data we gather.
Mistakes might of course happen, but in the aforementioned case, where it concerns the ongoing antics of "The Perilous Dreamer"/"Crimthan the Great"/"Llauranela", the margin of error so far has been neglectably small. If redric is not another incarnation of TPD, that would come as a (welcome) surprise.
Can't help it, guys. This situation sucks, for EVERYONE involved. We're here to talk about things that make us have a good time. That we cannot do that because even in our small, friendly, fringe community, there are a few rotten apples that enjoy some sort of bizarro internet warfare is a pretty bad thing to realize, quite frankly. We'll get over it, we've long dealt with the worst of it, but we'd rather not deal with this stuff, at all.
Since this link has popped up elsewhere, no sense in hiding it: We are considering a formal, possibly even legal complaint against "Dave" - whose real identity and address we've known for a while now - with the goal of shutting at least his present online operations down, and thus ending, or, at least, forcing a break on fifteen years of this guy trying to hurt others for his own enjoyment.
Please understand that we cannot share the information we are using as evidence with the public in detail - precisely because even within the current circumstances, we still want to protect the identity of "Dave", at least to the wider audiences. As I write to the Proboards support crew, one thing is banning this individual from every bigger oldschool forum, but another is, whatever, to be directly responsible for him losing his job.
That said, OF COURSE we've shared, reviewed, and discussed the information we are using as evidence internally, and with - if not all, then with a large portion of - the online community leaders in the oldschool D&D scene, precisely because we initially weren't sure whether this thing was at all real. It is with their approval that we've been taking these steps.
Now, so many people being involved has its advantages and disadvantages: "Disadvantages" as in, we'd liked to keep the above link out of the public eye, if possible. "Advantages" as in, word getting out about "Dave" and his antics has kind of solved this issue for us, already - because "Dave" has long been losing his audience, as people gradually started to become aware of his scumbag behavior. - So, for the time being, we're choosing not to take further action, simply because we don't need to. Without access to any of the major websites, neither to troll, nor to lure away the unsuspecting and the gullible to replenish the ranks of that bizarro mirror community they've been trying to create, there is little left for the trolls to do that needs to interest us.
- Also, we believe that you, the members of the oldschool community that we're trying to protect from crap like this, will be able to give your own responses: Let's simply forget this a-hole, and never talk about him again.
