For Finarvyn and others: So I just saw the new thread Rules of the board (and) How to join ODD74. My only question is how a prospective new member (who presumably would not have seen the rules or the pinned thread) would be able to sign up. I just did a test run and everything worked fine. But at the end, it said my registration - Joe Test Person - was awaiting approval. Now I assume, given what was said in the above thread, that Joe Test Person would NOT have been approved if he hadn't previously pinged Fin, and/or if he hadn't attached some note or some such indicating that he was a real person and was interested in OD&D, etc. But how would he know to do this? I have no idea how the template works, but could you change the language on that final "message" thingie so it asks prospective members to say a bit about themselves or why they like OD&D, etc. and make that an explicit requirement of joining? Otherwise, I assume many people will be rejected without knowing why OR someone will have to go through the tedious process of vetting people via some follow-up set of emails or whatever. Does that make sense? Perhaps I am missing something.

There was a little hustle involved when I invited Tim Kask to join. He almost didn't. He didn't want to jump through the hoops, but he eventually did.
Anyway, I am a member on a few other Proboards. At least one of them has a front page with one post category that is visible for a non-registered person to post on. Maybe this is an option? That way, someone who is genuinely interested in OD&D but doesn't know anyone here can make known their intentions.

Oakes, as far as I know the content of this board is open to anyone viewing it. You just have to be a member in order to post. That would mean that any perspective member ought to be able to see the "how to get in" stuff. The problem I'm going to have is that I don't remember to check the "pending approval" list very often, so someone like your test might have to sit and wait until I remember. No easy way around this unless I can find someone who can look over the requests and make decisions, since my choices appear to be: (1) No limits, everyone gets in (including our SPAM friends) (2) Restricted entry, but someone has to approve it. (3) No entry without directly contacting me. It's not like I sit here 24-7 trying to figure out who is in or out. I'm lucky if I check the boards once per day unless it's a weekend. EDIT: By the way, I just rejected your test account since I assumed you wouldn't want to keep it. It did come through, however.

That way, someone who is genuinely interested in OD&D but doesn't know anyone here can make known their intentions. This seems like a great idea. That way, someone who wants in can clearly introduce himself/herself. I'll chat with my team and see what they think!

I'm just glad I got in before this place developed 'standards'.

He joined and took questions that he answered on his youtube videos. I don't think he's posted much since then

For transparency, I will mention that I just deleted 48 accounts. (1) Have not logged in for 10 months. (2) Had single-digit post counts while here.
Again, I'm not clearing out active members. These are folks who haven't even been here to visit in almost a year and didn't contribute much when they actually did visit. The content of their posts is still here.

For equal transparency: From time to time, a few of the newbies might get messages looking more or less like this: Hey, [user]! There appear to be some anomalies with your IP address. Given that this community has had a huge problem with sock puppets and troll accounts, we have to ask you to provide some external form of confirmation of your identity. Ideally, something like this would be great: Obviously, you can be sure that we will treat whatever form of identity verification you present with the utmost discretion. - Please understand, however, that, if you should not respond or comply, we will ban your account without further notice after a waiting period of three days after sending out this message. Posting this here so it's clear that this is, in fact, us, and not some third party, or whatever. - This also comes with the clarification that I never left as a moderator - mainly because the ongoing trollfest didn't even give me time to do so. So, in case anybody wonders, you're not getting this message because I'd want to collect your photograph.

I just logged in and see that I received one of these messages about "some anomalies with your IP address" although the pm did not say what the anomalies are. I don't want to be part of any on-line forum enough to hand over personal identification. I belong to over twenty forums on a wide variety of topics and this is the first time I have been asked for ID. As it is wise for me to keep my on-line interests and my job remote from each other, I am unable or at least unwilling to comply with your request. FWIW for the rest of you, I use a VPN to protect my privacy and avoid problems with my job. That is also why I do not belong to Facebook, Twitter and other social media. So please go ahead and delete my account and I will forgo participation at this forum. I was hoping to join some of the great conversations, but it is not to be. Thank you anyway.

In order to make this less creepy:
We had proof that this one, "jacobgrimm", was yet another incarnation of "David", aka "The Perilous Dreamer". It's not that we will require ID verification from just about every newbie, and as you might well see, new members - approved, verified members - are well being admitted to the message board. This case was problematic, and so we had to inquire, and to establish a parameter of action in case our conditions wouldn't be met.
What shall I say? - HE CHOSE POORLY.
