Anyone else with a G+ account suddenly getting people following you, and when you check out their profiles, every single thing they posted is a link to a blog post about how horrible the OD&D Forums are?
I've had two so far.

I feel like I've somewhat lost control of my G+ circles. I may just be stupid, but it seems to be much harder to keep track of things on G+ - who is in which circle, and so on - than it was, say, 2 years ago.

I've actually been kind of ignoring G+ for a couple years, so I'm not entirely sure how things work anymore. Also, I should clarify that, when I said "every single thing they posted is a link to a blog post", I mean that there are multiple blog posts, but all the posts are on the same blog, and they are all about different aspects of the "terribleness" of the OD&D Forums. And there is no other content on either profile. They obviously seem to be created to promote that blog and its viewpoint. |

I would avoid public mention of whatever blog it is. 10:1 nobody reads it as-is, and feeding trolls is a sure way to engender more.

I think I'm a little flattered. They actually quoted my comment from the other thread as "blatant counter factual" Apparently they though I was referring to the other board when I was actually talking about their blog. Too much time on their hands.

I doubt anyone outside of the handful of people that went there from that link is even aware of it. As a veteran of the Catholic blogosphere scene I can tell you that there are a lot of troubled people out there who love howling into the wind even if no one, or almost no one, is listening. In a sense, they're quite harmless since they have no audience. Unless of course you count the harm they're doing to themselves.

Having read the blog in question, I think this forum would do itself a favor by linking to the blog when addressing it. ODD74 is blessed in its enemies in this case, as the blog is really incoherent. It's so poorly written and its complaints are presented in such an inside-baseball fashion that it's ineffective. Not just ineffective, counterproductive to its own cause (whatever that might be). Assuming some reasonable, persuasive complaints could be lodged about ODD74, they're not going to be made by that tinfoil-hat brigade.

I was really more concerned with what is essentially spamming a link via using sockpuppets to follow people. I occasionally got the women followers trying to get me to go to their pic sites or webcams, and occasionally other people selling music or web services. But this was the first where I had someone who was actually targeting me based on my profile... I was wondering if they were targeting everyone in the G+ OSR community, or they were actually looking up members of this forum on G+. |

I've seen nothing about this "criticizing the OD&D forums" and quite frankly I don't care about what's said. I like this site. I like the moderators and I like reading what everyone posts about the original edition of this game, uh, the one that came out before I was born. I like reading about the minutiae of the rules, the blogs, the experiences and it boggles my mind why people keep taking digs at this site. What's the point? We are playing and talking about the games we like. Fin and Rafe and Zenopus and other mods have let conversations and dissenting opinions go on and I applaud them for their courage to keep that stuff open and honest. However, when I come here I want to read and interact with you all about OD&D. Not to hear trash talk one way or the other. I can entertain reasonable discussions about much within this game as well as other editions of said game and other derivative games and clones and have fun about it all, but I for one would like to see the trash stop. When the sewer is backed up it's too late to flush. I'd rather talk games and a.) memories of awesome games in the past and b.) what cool stuff you have planned for the present and future. There is a reason I'm not on social media formats. I don't need to see or read or waste my time getting incensed over others opining about something I like.
I was going to post in the "State of the ODD" bit but since that is locked this is close enough. I like this site, I like the mods, I like the posters here and I am always happy to read what's said to learn more about what I might incorporate into my games in the future. Let's be creative all and be proactive, not just reactive to negative blog stuff.

Not a G plusser, but I did just look at the blog. The guy seems to be sitting back and riffing on discussions here and holding a grudge with a person or two. I really hate to see individuals targeted online in this manner. Sorry to those it affects.

Well, one of the authors was commenting over at Jeffro's Space Gaming Blog, trying to ingratiate himself into the anti-SJW community or whatever. This annoyed me. Despite myself, I sent a Google+ warning to Jeffro and my other Google+ gamer friends. I assume the blog authors saw it. All the posts are now down. Do I get a commission from @rafael?  LATER EDIT: Down and back up again for second time. I'm getting dizzy. |

Problem is, although Facebook has the crappiest interface ever (well, except of Ello, but I haven't been back there for a while and they may have fixed it...) G+ is crappy in a few other ways. What it's really good at is (was?) organizing people you follow, or controlling what you show to whom. You add people to various circles. If you post to a circle, only people in that circle get to see it. If you set up your main feed to only show posts from certain circles, that's what you see. You can prioritize people as relatives, close friends, friends, acquaintances, and random people, so that you only receive instant notifications from the first two, check the third group daily, and check the fourth less often. It's also good at organizing online games and running them in Google Hangouts. There was an explosion of online RPGs, mostly old school D&D, that people called ConstantCon, the continuous online RPG convention. And a set of standards called FLAILSNAILS that is basically "GM runs games using whatever rules they want and no one worries about it, and they bring characters from any game system over to any other game system, with the GM making adjustments as they see fit". However, G+ isn't perfect, and it's easy to lose interest, as I did. I rarely log into it, which is why the sudden notification that "people" were adding me to their circles in G+ was kind of unusual. It was all a scam to promote this one blog of grievances against the ODD74 forums. |

I like G+. Easy to use, and lots of interesting content specific to what interests me. It is how I found the majority of blogs of users here and on similar boards.

That is the fault of Alphabet who deliberately nerfed their attempt to compete with Facebook in social media, and gave up on gaining market share of social media. I always thought G+ was for artists, engineers, and scientists, and heavy hitting business people much more so than Facebook, But then G+ started taking away tools they had like storage for large high quality photographs, and tools to detect effectiveness of social media growth campaigns. There used to be an easy way to share circles, and G+ nerfed that as well. They continually redesign the User Interface, however don't really improve it by adding new features. I can't post coherent articles on G+ using their tools because the AI sorts the photos I put into articles, and won't let me put the photos in the order I like. This is very important because I can directly measure the impact of my articles by publishing too similar articles with the same imagery and then measuring reader response based on the organization of the imagery within the article. Also they have very little respect for privacy. Now I have actually went back to using Facebook in 2016, because Facebook is ubiquitous and has actually added features to improve privacy, however Facebook is horrendous using censorship completely inappropriately, and allowing regimes and political parties to manipulate politics, choice and free democracy, and providing little or no protection for people who fight for truth, justice, and liberty. Frankly, all of the major media is so bad, that I have been setting up new websites to promote truth, justice, and open gaming. Both Facebook and Alphabet work hard to suppress and minimize the impact and influence of Indy websites using secret search algorithms that favor the junk content from their network, and this is a much bigger problem than a couple of gamer sockpuppet stalkers, although I'm not certain the two problems are entirely unrelated. |

There certainly was a time when I though Google+ was really going to be the place for me. But it definitely has backslid. That said, I do find it easier to follow RPG groups there than Facebook. I get tired of certain aspects of Facebook (seeing the same post multiple times in my feed in one sitting, it resetting the feed if I'm away too long [especially on the phone - and then losing my place in a post I was still reading], not telling me the reason the post I read 5 days ago and has had no new comments for a couple days is showing up again because someone liked it, hitting enter to start a new paragraph posts instead, I can keep going...). Google+ does have the best Classic Traveller community (which unfortunately is in a bit of a pickle due to the owner getting banned [for unknown and probably totally uncool reasons] and having no backup owner, hopefully it will get a new owner soon). I think it actually also helps that the community is smaller. The Traveller communities on Facebook, while cool, are sometimes hard to keep up with due to the number of folks involved. Frank |

I didn't start the thread to talk about G+. I asked if anyone who uses G+ experienced some weird behavior. And no one's talking about truth, justice, and liberty, either. So you may have completely misread what's going on in this thread. Just saying. |
