At Ye Knights Table Inn there are three mercenaries who seem interested:
Garth (suave & well educated) — armed with crossbow, dagger, chainmail — wants a half share, plus 5sp up front Heinrich (hunter from the Alpine Village) — bow & sword, leather — wants a half share, plus 3sp up front Gusto (looks strong) — bow & dagger, leather — wants a half share, plus 2sp up front
MUs need to choose their spells. They have access to all 1st level Magic-User and Cleric spells from Men & Magic in their spellbooks. While on expedition, they can also 'ritual cast' spells directly out of their spellbooks, but doing so takes 1 hour and they must sacrifice 1sp as part of the arcane rites.
Gusto is paid 2sp up front. You head to the Old Spa Quarter to find Constable Friederick and his minstrels. They're already dressed in their minstrel best and ready to go. 1sp paid to the Constable.
Turn 1, first move (mid-morning) You make your way back to The Pump Room Alehouse and cross the street to the abandoned civic building that leads to the ancient spa city of Aquae Sulis.
"At the bottom of the stairs are two city streets, one leading north deep into the ruins [where you went exploring last time] and the other west along the wall. Both streets are about 10 yards wide and paved very unevenly with flagstone, with plants and tree roots breaking up out of the ground all over. The buildings along the streets vary from decayed heaps of rubble to fully intact. You can hear the faint trickle of water in the distance."

Mikhael was not so sure. "Magnolia," he said, turning to their sprite employer, "Can you be sure that fountain we fought over last time was not pool we were looking for? Should we be taking closer look?"
Magnolia shakes her head. "No, I don't think it could have been the Sacred Spring. From what I've read, the Temple of the Vision Goddess was first built to house the springs, and the city of Aquae Sulis grew up around the temple as it became a popular place of pilgrimage. I think if we can find the Temple of the Vision Goddess, we can find the Sacred Spring."
"You didn't ask! Besides, it's just something I read. Another rumor says that the Spring was located within walking distance of the Temple. So—oh, fiddlesticks! What's the difference, this is science! As serious limnologists, we can't just pick and choose which pools we want to study, we must catalogue them all." Magnolia adjusts her glasses officiously and spills some of her parchment notes in the process.
Mikhael had been talking to Olieth. "What spell iz it you can be casting again...?"
Flashing back to the morning, Olieth tells Mikhael all about his magical studies over an eggs and sausage breakfast. "Being only a medium, I can memorize but one spell a day; however, so complete was my tutelage under the famed court magician Heward Le Ploof that I have under my command all eleven known spells of the first degree. These include…"
"Comrades, I am thinking we should be going to Temple of Old Vision next, yes?"
Turn 1, Second Move "Right, that would be this way." Magnolia ushers the party forward 30 yards north, to the side street on the left. At the corner here you recognize the building whose stone door frame is decorated with eroded carvings of a wide variety of sacred symbols. Down the side street you can see the weathered remains of the building that Magnolia had earlier identified as the Temple of the Vision Goddess.
The side street goes down 30 yards and ends. Ahead is a small plaza, bordered by the Temple on the west end, a well-kept manse on the North end, and an overgrown park on the south end. To your left is another side street, heading south alongside the park.
Suddenly the ground gives way next to the party! A large, cat-sized trapdoor spider bursts out of its nest, which is camouflaged as a boulder among the rubble.
Combat! The party is surprised (2 vs 3)
The trapdoor spider waits before ambushing a random party member (Taivel)
It gives Taivel a nasty bite (18, for 3 damage), and Taivel makes his save vs poison (17)!

Mikhael had his bow out too, but did not want to risk hitting Taivel if he missed, so he dropped it and drew his sword. "Kill it, quickly!" he cried, pausing just long enough for Gusto to shoot before charging in.
