Hey, Just mentioned this in another rhread, and thought it could be of general interest, as well: Looks good, even though this certainly one of the more expensive crowd-funding operations out there. - Personally, I am not looking to participate, but I certainly hope this becomes as successful as possible. I missed Barsoom! - R

I'm torn. I'm not a big fan of the 2d20 system, but I've wanted Barsoom minis forever and it looks like a nice set of them as part of the kickstart. I'd rather play OD&D Barsoom with their miniatures....

I was so excited... Then I seen "2d20 system" on the website and know the game would not see the light of day. I like the attribute list and how they work with each other. I'm not that impressed with the artwork. Its looks like the same old Photoshop style I see everywhere and they are being too conservative with it. Barsoom-themed art is all about shameless beefcake & cheesecake fantasy; an Art Director who fails to see that should stick with the safer 5e books.

Modiphius has been really proactive about pumping out licensed RPGs, but I just can't imagine any of them being very successful. The whole business model seems too similar to all of those failed attempts at licensed games in the '90s, with the one exception of throwing 3D printed miniatures into the mix. The only problem is that their house game system really has nothing to do with miniatures, so the models don't even help push the game, especially when they're selling at $6-10 a pop.
Personally, I'd be much happier if they ditched the games entirely and focused on making lots of licensed miniatures. That's a business model that hasn't been tried much lately. If they really just had to sell books with them, then make them miniatures games, or setting sourcebooks that don't rely on a system.

I backed the Kickstarter and got the "beta" version of the John Carter RPG. Thumbing through it looks alright. I've already got a backlog of games to play, and my game group isn't really interested in playing the 2d20 system. The only reason I backed it was to get the miniatures to play with the WotRP RPG.

Yeah, I should have backed this just for the minis, too. I've wanted Barsoom minis for as long as I can remember, but I'm not good at painting and just seemed like a lot of cash for unpainted.

Yeah, I don't have any words for how much I DISLIKE the 2d20 system. The Conan game is so bad that even as the most rabid Conan fan ever, I sold my leather corebook and haven't even bothered to look at the past couple PDFs. Even though it's written by a veritable who's-who of Howard scholars, the writing is so dry, and the layout such an eyesore, that I just keep going back to my old Mongoose books for source material. They're just as solid textually, and much more pleasant to read.
I originally backed the Carter Kickstarter, and got in on the playtest. Having seen the playtest as well as been asked by the writer to ghost edit a chapter of the Carter RPG while it was still in development, it's no better, and I canceled my pledge on the Kickstarter.
Modiphius seems to be putting everything they have into Conan right now, after Vampire crashed and burned over social justice outrage and Star Trek is just kind of sitting out there. I think that's a company that got way too big, way too fast. I don't see them surviving another 5 years.

I canceled my pledge on the Kickstarter. I didn't know you could do that! My problem is that I have wanted a good, well supported, John Carter game for most of my life. Wanted the minis, wanted something that was easy to play. The kickstarter was so tempting but also so expensive, and the minis were unpainted, and the system didn't grab me. I was in on the alpha and beta playtests but didn't like what I saw so I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't back it. Just too many negatives and not enough positives. Still regretting it but not enough to buy in at the moment, either.

I canceled my pledge on the Kickstarter. I didn't know you could do that! You can if you do it before the Kickstarter ends. That's what I meant, sorry. Though many companies will give you a refund if you change your mind after the KS ends. Never be ashamed for not backing a substandard project.
