I pulled a hamstring and sitting in my computer chair for long periods of time is rough, so I've been camped out in the recliner and reading random stuff. As I've been reading ERB's Mars stories recently I decided to pull out my copy of Warriors of Mars and re-read it again. A few semi-random thoughts:
(1) It's a shame that nobody has come up with an inexpensive set of character, monster, and flyer minis for Barsoom. Prepainted. I'd love to have armies of tharks, fleets of flyers, and the like so that I could really play WoM right. I've run a few games using SPI counters and the like, but real minis would be awesome.
(2) I still love how RPG-like the individual combat sections are, and wish that Gary had done a John Carter RPG for real back in the day.
(3) I continue to marvel at the brevity of rules. WoM, Boot Hill, Metamorphosis Alpha, OD&D ... all have a maximum of cool stuff packed into a minimum number of pages. I think that game designers nowadays are really missing the boat on this, or maybe they are all convinced that the only way to make money in game design is through $50 hardback books. These old TSR gems are true classics with cheezy artwork, simple "just add imagination" rules, and are just so much fun to read.

If it hasn't been mentioned before, over on the BGG page for WoM, in the file section - user djlittle1960 has uploaded almost 30 pages of counters and airships. If you have the resources to print and play these sheets will give you all you need (and then some) to try the game. Here is the link to the page (I don't know if you have to be a registered user to dl the files but it's free in any case). boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/34303/warriors-mars/files

I found a page or two of counters there at one point, but didn't know there were 30 pages. Must go look again. Thanks for the tip!
