Some pictures of my 15mm English for your amusement: The English gentry and men-at-arms. You may spot both Lancastrian and Yorkist banners in the mix there; these guys are from my WotR armies. Probably a bit "late" for HYW, but hey Hobilars or currours and border staves. English foot. Various spears and liveried billmen (on the left), reckoned as blades in DBx terms. The pointy end; a.k.a. the retinue archers. The liveried guys in the foreground are more distinctly WotR than HYW English, but could be pressed into service at a pinch. The guys behind them are a bit more generic. A bunch of shire levy archers; handy when they show up in large numbers And, not forgetting the army baggage train and a couple of cannon. Enjoy.

Those are fantastic - especially considering they're 15mm!

Another freely downloadable PDF: Great Battles of History for DBA 3. This book details 12 of the "great battles of history" in DBA3 terms. It includes a historical study of each battle, followed by DBA3 orders of battle, followed by pictures/explanations of the games in motion. The last three will be of particular interest to those obsessed with the later medieval period; the Battle of Bouvines (1214 AD) onward... DBA fans of any sort should enjoy the DBA3 development comments in the preface too

Wow, nice find! The advice in the final section about psiloi is interesting - must ponder this for a bit.

I was given an advance copy of 3.0 but still haven't gotten around looking at it in detail. This thread is making want to sit down finally and read it through.
2nd edition has been one of my favourite zippy wargames since I was introduced to it through the WADBAG guide. These days I mostly play HotT—by the rulebook when my club runs their annual tournament, but on my own I prefer to play it combined with DBA, defaulting to DBA rules whenever the two conflict. As much as I enjoy HotT, I find DBA+HotT units even more enjoyable.

DBA is a wonderful game. I hear the whole argument decrying that it is "rock, paper, scissors" which is an argument that can be applied to virtually every wargame. This is the very nature of combat. To be a successful commander, you must exploit enemy weakness. DBA does exactly that in a simple way. Unlike "rock, paper, scissors" you don't always win the favorable matchup, which is the way it should be. There are a fair amount of top down counters at the Junior General site. Many are mounted on square or rectangular bases. 2cmX4cm or 4cmX4cm. DBA can be played with these but you will get a slightly different experience with them since, solid blades, for instance will fall back as fast as Auxilia or Psiloi. Not really a big deal. You just need to be aware of the slight change for when you play with "properly" based troops. www.juniorgeneral.org/index.php/figure/figureList/topdownsIf you want to apply your own paint program skills, here is a sheet of masters, many of which I made or modified. www.juniorgeneral.org/index.php/figure/view/TopDownAncientscoloredDBA is great fun and a fantastic game for an evening of lite fare.

That was my plan! I was thinking about doing a solo Greek-Persian v1.0-style campaign, and the paper flats are a much cheaper alternative to amassing metal armies for solo games. For now, I'm using the "counters" I showed up-thread.

Does anyone know what the best sources are for ancients miniatures (preferably 15mm)? It's looking like eBay, but I'd rather deal directly with sellers (in the US). Splintered Light has 15mm Dark Age historicals. I like their stuff. www.splinteredlightminis.com/15daagehi.htmlOtherwise, Alternative Armies (formerly 15mm.co.uk) has good stuff. www.alternative-armies.com/

Alternative is a UK seller, but I hadn't come across Splintered before. The detail looks pretty good on those sets.

Yes, he is but he often has "free shipping" sales or good sales where the discount covers the cost of shipping. It's worth keeping an eye on. I've known Gavin for awhile now and he's been a great supplier of a vast amount of my 15mm HOTT armies that I use for wargames in my campaign world.

I'm trying to save money, not spend it! I always have that problem walking into BH. Over the past 10-15 years their historical ranges have dropped off mostly to just American 19th & 20th century wars, but even so there's still always something to grab your eye.

I really enjoy DBA and DBMM. The 3.0 rules are out for both at this point and I started with 1.1 many years ago. I didn't read through all the posts yet but if you want some tips on getting started or looking for opponents on the left coast, hit me up

I have played a bunch of ancients wargames rules over the years and I generally come back to DBA for a couple reasons. 1. It's pretty easy to pickup the basics 2. Nearly all the rules can be summarized on a single sheet of paper 3. Games are fast, only about an hour or less
When it comes to wanting to add a few extra details or larger games, DBMM is great because it includes rules for weather and additional classifications for troops.
Lastly, there is no BS around adding up attacks for each individual figure, the base is the element and no need for casualty rings and other fiddly stuff. Play WRG, Warrior, etc and you end up with that stuff that doesn't really add a lot to the game results and also includes complex mechanisms for relaying orders that we pretty much have zero historical evidence for supporting yet make the game last far longer than needed.
Other games that add a bit of variety and can be fun Warmaster Ancients & L'art de la Guerre. Some I thought were a bit cumbersome for the experience Warhammer Ancient Battles & Field of Glory.

Brookhurst still has a bunch of Xyston models, at least when I was i the store back in July. But, I think at this point I generally head to www.magistermilitum.com/ for figures and if possible, I just order DBx rules directly from Amazon UK. Thanks Prime.

How is the shipping cost/time/experience from Magister Militum to the US? The past few shipments have been reasonable. it has been a couple years to be honest, but no complaints. You can also occasionally find Essex 15mm dba armies and RMA/FOG armies on ebay for decent prices.
