I liked the direction they took with the movie, but this would have been pretty cool as well.

Now that is a good idea.
Maybe the ugnauts themselves were clone refugees. I can even see that being one of the controversies that sparked off the Clone Wars: many of the programmes wouldn't actually clone supermen, but instead would progressively mutate a species to maximize its adaptability to certain tasks and environments. The ugnauts may be clones, from human stock or some other species, but from a specimen that was modified to produce the ideal gas giant worker bee, mentally and physically—or maybe they were designed for some utterly different purpose, but Lando provided Cloud City for them as a safe haven. In fact, any number of the aliens found in a spacer cantina might have been cloned mutations, some of them resoundingly unsuccessful; and nobody would know the true number, of course. Most of the cloning records were destroyed in the Wars, and not even the Empire can keep track of all the species in the galaxy.
