Here’s how I currently number the Episodes in my head. I must accept the numbering from the three original movies circa 1983, and plow forward with the big, then-official continuation novels of of the 90s by Zahn (because they really are great). Another way to look at it it is that I mostly reject the idea of a grand saga, and simply include ‘Adventures of Luke Skywalker’ that I like. We end up with something not *quite* the swashbuckling serial one might have imagined in 1977, but, still pretty sweet, IMO:
4. Star Wars
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Return of the Jedi
7. Heir to the Empire
8. Dark Force Rising
9. The Last Command
10. Specter of the Past
11. Vision of the Future
12. The Last Jedi
I have somehow had it in my head (I could swear from a throwaway quote from an interview in the 80s) that Episode 12 should be the point at which Luke, Kenobi-like, hands down the lightsaber to the next-generation hero. One supposes that’s what we’re going to get in this year’s movie, so, that works out perfectly.
I realize I’m mixing together EU/Legends and Disney/Canon. I don’t imagine that irks anyone here.
Not sure what to think about the ‘missing’ first three episodes. Of course there could be no Adventures of Luke Skywalker prior to his first one in Episode 4; however, even the medieval, 16-book Parzival dedicated the first three books to Parzival’s father. So, of course it’s legit to have three episodes featuring the adventures of Annikin [sic]. The problem is that the existing Prequel Trilogy is simply inadmissible, and taints the concept completely. So, either they’re left vacant and theoretical, or, we go with the next best thing (again, selected on the basis of quality):
1. Han Solo at Stars’ End
2. Han Solo’s Revenge
3. Han Solo and the Lost Legacy
(Yes, I have become a novels guy.)
4. Star Wars
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Return of the Jedi
7. Heir to the Empire
8. Dark Force Rising
9. The Last Command
10. Specter of the Past
11. Vision of the Future
12. The Last Jedi
