I know that I can't have been the only kid playing D&D and tossing in characters from my favorite fantasy and science fiction sources. I remember my players meeting Doctor Who and his companions, along with daleks, cybermen, sontarans, etc. And I threw in the Chinese doll that was actually an evil animated sociopathic entity.
I've had my players cross swords with Solomon Kane, hunt alongside Dar the Beastmaster, and hold off the army of a blood cult alongside Hawk the Slayer and his mates. They encountered the Tarakian race, challenged Tarl Cabot, and entered into a blood feud against Conan the Cimmerian. They got their grubby mitts on the Sun Sword and that three-bladed monstrosity that we all thought looked so cool when we were 12.
As the game got more fantastical, they battled the evil Sith nation that was beginning to flourish East of Blackmoor, got their hands on lightsabers, were captured and sold into slavery by Boba Fett, and had a final showdown with the ominous Vader.
They encountered mogwais and replicants, found themselves manipulated by the Master, and came to the attention of the super-scientist Doc Savage, who had created a device that linked alternate realities together.
And of course they killed the indestrutible berserker Wolverine by using several Bigby's Hand spells to hold him beneath the surface of a pit of volcanic lava for an hour.
All within perhaps two years' time. Once I hit 15, I actually started role-playing.
So what about the rest of you? What famous faces entered your worlds when you were just starting out? Which ones stayed to become actual long-term NPCs? How did the players react when they showed up in the game?
