So I am attending the local Con here Dragonflight this weekend. This is going on. I have no experience with it at all. Anyone played it? Trying to decide whether to sign up for it or not, thanks
Melee/Wizard Tournament While you're enjoying Dragonflight, don't forget about the Melee/Wizard Tournament on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 (Event JB-103). Melee/Wizard is man-to-man fantasy combat. It's the second game Steve Jackson did for Metagaming (right after Ogre). The tournament will take place in a scale representation of the Roman Coliseum, with space for up to 45 players -- so there's room for everyone. It's a winner-take-all contest, with the prize being a piece of swag that can't be had anyplace else; it's unique and one-of-a-kind.
And don't be worried if you've never played the game before. It's simple enough to pick up in about 10 minutes. But even so, we have a Melee/Wizard - TFT workshop running all day Friday and Saturday up until the tournament (Event AB-102). Come on by and learn the game. Try to defeat our experts in one-on-one or multiple combat. We've even made up a dungeon crawl system if you're in the mood for a campaign.
So don't miss out.

So don't miss out. It's the very simple game that GURPS eventually grew out of. Sorta like the relationship Chainmail has to D&D. Sounds like fun, I wish I was there.

Have fun! Sounds like it will be a blast.
I remember when I was a kid in the late 70's/very early 80's and my older sister thought Spock was sexy and her shaggy hippy boyfriends would have issues of Sci-Fi magazines laying around that had cheap B&W ads for Melee, Wizard,The Fantasy Trip, OGRE... I was utterly fascinated by them. "A game...where you could be a wizard? An A.I. tank in WWIII? A starship captain? How is that possible? How would that even work?" I would wonder. Soon the "Bad" boy in the 5th grade would introduce me to the Moldvay-Cook D&D Basic Pink Box and I would learn.

You like D&D. You like wargames. You'll probably like Melee/Wizard. It has simplified character stats and hex-based movement. Here's a tribute page to the game. You can find the rules there, if you'd like to read them.

Boom. After 35 years, Steve Jackson has regained the rights to The Fantasy Trip. www.sjgames.com/ill/archive/2017-12-26I'm weirdly nostalgic for this game despite never having actually played it. My warm fuzzies are based on nothing more than the black-and-white ads for it that I saw as a kid in the Sci-Fi magazines that my sister's Gor-loving, first-generation Trekkie, hippy boyfriend always had laying around his apartment back in the Carter Administration.

Nice! My Melee and Wizard micro-boxes are moldering away, so it would be nice to replace them. I'd love to see it all released as a one-volume compendium.

Maybe it's a very 80's thing but I always dug the micro-box format.

I wrote a bit about this, including Holmes' review & use of the 3d6-roll-under-stat mechanic in the sample RPG in his 1981 book: Return of the Fantasy Trip

I am hoping that once Steve Jackson does his re-release of The Fantasy Trip now that he has the rights back to it, maybe we can see some more support for GURPS.
But given their Dungeon Fantasy release didn't sell as well as they initially hoped, that may be unlikely. That being said, I think GURPS Dungeon Fantasy didn't do too well because it tried a little too hard to compete for the same niche as D&D 5E and Pathfinder, the two heavy-hitters of the modern RPG industry.

The Kickstarter packages of the TFT Legacy Edition are being delivered. Mine came last week; what an amazing bit of functional nostalgia. I look forward to playing with it soon. Since they included two of the original programmed adventures, there is some solo play potential as part of the basic package...

I was in a game store near Flint, Michigan, over the weekend and they had a couple copies of this on the shelf. My wife bought me one for my birthday. I haven't had time to crack it open yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing what's inside. I didn't play much TFT back in the day, and honestly I can't remember which books I even own (or owned). It'll be like a brand new thing, I'm thinking.

It'll be like a brand new thing, I'm thinking. I recently got the "Two Complete Games in One Box" version of Melee & Wizard, and am really enjoying it. My kids quickly got the idea, and their two wizards are now on a hastily-constructed hexcrawl quest which doubles as a playtest of the different monsters for me. I'm impressed at the clarity of writing, the efficiency of the system (three stats are made to do a lot of different things), and the tactical element. Having the hex map and pieces makes it very tactile, and a good introduction to RPGs for kids.
