I think you're right, Mike. That makes the most sense. And Gary had it right right from the beginning.
I made up a list of the monsters by kind and then by hit dice. I'll switch around the order of the monsters to match it.
EDIT:
The types I have finished and formatted: Domestic Types Dragons Dungeon Denizens Faeries Giant Types
And of course Odd Men.
The types I have finished but have not formatted:
Giant Vermin Lycans Magical Beasts Monstrous Animals Normal Types Undead.

OK unhelpful brag post:
So I made a proof copy of that first volume over on Lulu. While it's not technically private, it's not ready yet - it's just a proof copy. I had help from Urieal in formatting and copy editing the first volume. He even helped a ton with the covers. We're also planning a digest-sized edition, so I will be designing another cover for that and making a proof copy of that as well.
How thrilling is it to have your very own book in your hands, right? I'll know how thrilling in 2 to 6 business days.

The drive upon which I kept all my RPG stuff got corrupted and I had to eventually re-format it. I lost nearly everything that isn't up on Google Docs already.
Bummer! But my own fault for not backing everything up.
The good news is, I was able to recover about 10% of the intellectual work on the drive. The bad news is, I lost the .docx files for Books I and II, along with 90% of what I kept on the drive. It's heartbreaking and I'll take a little break from this process before I get back with it.

UPDATE: Project's over. I lost 90% of what I'd collected over the last 5 years including my manuscripts in .doc form.
I'm just crushed. I can't do this now. Maybe later.

I've got a doc version...

I just bonked. I had everything backed up. I took it down to redo it and didn't put it back up again.
Let this be a lesson to the next guy!~

I haven't done any work on the game. But I'm thinking about OSR stuff and I just joined a BECM/1e game as a player rather than Ref.
Losing the art assets I had accumulated; losing the word docs I had; these are incomprehensible obstacles.
But I am thinking...

I see that your link above still works, so I encourage you to work on the rest of it. It seems a pretty cool project to me.

Love the Greyhawkian/pumpkin-headed bugbear. Scott Anderson, do you remember where that illustration was from?

I don't remember where any of it is from. I don't have it anymore either.
That's the worst of it - all the great public domain and use-with-permission line art I lost. Probably 1,000 illustrations.
If a .doc version of book 1 exists, it would have that art in line.

The .doc and some of the in-line art existed all along! Ureal of Dragonsfoot, my collaborator on the project, had kept the assets in a drop box account!
It's like the golden idol scene in Indiana Jones... it took me 12 hours to even look because I was afraid something would happen if I did!
Now I can fix the copy I want to fix and make it again.
THANKS JEFF!

I made the few, small edits that I think were necessary. There is one new optional rule about hobbits sneaking. Jeff has it again to finish layout and turn it back into a .pdf. Then I will upload it to Lulu again and order another proof copy. If that one is good, then I will begin to promote it. In the fullness of time I really think it's a nice version of D&D.
