I saw this at the drive-in tonight, on a double bill with the surfer-vs.-shark thriller The Shallows (and two tall boys of hard apple cider snuck in my bag and one exquisitely sloppy microwaved cheeseburger from the snack bar. Don't tell my doctor, please.)
It's not a masterpiece, and like most modern Hollywood movies it's about ten or fifteen minutes too long, and if you think Tarzan is stupid it won't change your mind, but...this was really surprising good considering the dismal reviews and box office. It's one of the better Tarzan movies and probably the single most faithful to E.R.B.'s text. It's not quite John Carter, but it was obviously made by and for Burroughs fans and with respect for the source material. Definitely worth catching.

Pretty much agree with all you wrote. :)I thought the soundtrack was pretty sweet, though.

It's on my list of movies to see with my wife.
I tried reading the ERB Tarzan book several times but could never get past the first few pages, but last spring (in preparation for the movie) I decided to plow ahead and read the whole book. And liked it a lot.

My wife and I saw this today. She was there for the actor, I was there for Tarzan, and we were both pretty pleased.

Saw it with my wife today. We both enjoyed it, but she hadn't realized that it wasn't a total retelling of the story but instead told older events through flashback.
Jane was pretty hot, too.

My wife and I saw it last weekend at the discount cinema and it was highly enjoyable. As much as I have enjoyed ERB's Mars and Venus stories, I guess it's time to read the Tarzan works. When I was young there was a Saturday serial animation that I was pretty addicted to, Hana Barbera I think. Being as my wife and I have pretty divergent film tastes it was a great time since we agreed it was fun!

I haven't seen either movie but this sounds like my ideal movie-viewing situation!
