A friend of mine is running a 5E campaign set in modern-day New York city. Excited by the game, I did some web surfing on "5E" and "modern" to see what kind of stuff is out there. I found some nifty rules for firearms and armor in the modern world. I found some "Urban Arcana" references, which was an old d20 sourcebook.
I was also reminded about one thing I dislike about the classes in d20 Modern: the fact that they are so lame. "Strong hero" and "Smart hero" and the like just don't do it for me the way that Ranger and Wizard do, and this tends to kill the mood for me. Even d20 Cthulhu had dumb class options where you could be more "offensive" or more "defensive" but otherwise were still pretty much the same hero.
My friend's game isn't doing it that way, but instead we are running regular 5E classes but with updated weapons. We have a lot of Monks, and he has limited all characters to human since non-humans don't exist in the modern world, but he has also allowed me to run a Wizard (Harry Dresden style!) and we have Clerics and other fun options. While it's not so down-and-dirty realistic, I've found that running a modern campaign this way gives all of the fun of D&D but in a different environment.
Anyone else running 5E in a non-fantasy setting? How is it working for you?

A couple more sessions in the modern setting with regular 5E classes. I'm enjoying it a lot. My wizard really wanted a pistol, so once we overpowered some armed guards I was the first one to step up and ask for one. I had hoped to run more of a normal human and keep my magic in reserve to surprise the bad guys, so when we rushed into a warehouse and found these nasty dudes I ran in and pulled my gun and fired. Rolled a natural one and the gun jammed. Wizard with a gun breaks gun. Anyway, taking a lot of inspiration from the DRESDEN FILES books and am hoping to customize my wizard to have a spell list a lot like what Harry uses. Much fun so far...

Have you checked out Kevin Crawford's Silent Legions yet? It's OSR Cthulhu (well, not actually Cthulhu...) in the present day, you might find it to be your kind of thing.

I keep meaning to do it but seem to forget a lot. Based on what I've heard it is exactly what I'd like to run for my OD&D group. Not quite what I'm playing with this 5E Modern game, but what I'd probably rather run.
