Day 16, turn 1 for Ramon:
It was an important day for Ramon, his first full day officially being in charge of planning the raid on Dieg Manor. And he was at the Red Dona Inn early in the morning (9 am) to meet with Jean-Marie and Daphne, his fellow Harvester's Heroes.
'Classiest' of the hostels in this quarter, the Red Dona catered to rich people who wanted to 'slum it' in a faux dive. The drinks were cheap honey mead and the food was bean meal mash, but the dice games tended to be for high stakes and there were hidden amenities for those who did not want to be too authentic. There was also an attached store selling 'novelty' items like peasant clothes and burlap sacks.
"Thank you for coming," Daphne said. "Fortunato explained to us late last night what was said at the meeting. He said he mentioned to you that there were other adventurers in the city. One of them stays here...for whatever his reasons. He is an elf named Mezlo. He is not Consortium, but it's said he runs errands for the White Sage, who is also unaffiliated with the Consortium. We have talked to him, in the past, about trying for the Harvesters, but he is not interested."
"We believe he is Good, though," Jean-Marie said. "He may be a useful addition for the attack, if he can be convinced to help. We thought you should talk to him."

Day 16, turn 1 for Joaquim, Marcel:
Joaquim was still sore from his unhealed injuries ((currently at 9 out of 14 hp)) and Marcel insisted on a big breakfast, so they did not succeed at reaching Txanton's as early as Joaquim had hoped. Still, it was not late either when they reached the alchemist's shop (just after 9 am).
Txanton met them at his shop window. "You did not give me such a challenge this time, eh? This one, I discovered easy. Come in and I tell you."
He showed them their potion. "Diminuition. Shrinking. Drink the whole thing, you will be the size of a small mouse. Drink half, you will be the size of a halfling. It never lasts more than two hours, often half that."
Ramon felt odd in such a place. It seemed strange that people would wish to pretend to be something other than what they were. He never had that desire and did not think others needed to indulge in it. People were who they were and that was a wonderful thing. Ramon did his best to accept even the most difficult of people, it seemed like the best way to live life.
"I think you two are right," Ramon said to Jean-Marie and Daphne. "Do we think he has skills similar to Fortunato and the departed Sergi? It would be good to have another person able to help with traps and such. Or Mezlo a wizard? Those can be quite useful as well, as you know. And as of right now we only have one of those."
This afternoon Ramon planned to meet with the Church elders and explain some of the plan - he planned to leave as much of it out as he could. He did not want to lie but he did want to avoid the plan being disrupted.
While they waited he tried to make small talk with Daphne, "So. Uhh, what is it like adventuring for you? I mean, every woman I've known before I met you has been fighting ankle-biters and the like."
Unsure how they would split the potion with Ximo, Joaquim and Marcel inquired with Txanton about how much a potion like this would sell for. Then they would discuss the options with Ximo later. For now, the pair headed off to the Silver Consortium to learn about their magic ring.

Day 16, turn 2 for Ramon:
"Mezlo is a magic-user," Jean-Marie shared. "If he has skills like Fortunato's...he has kept such to himself. I will go ask if he is here and if he can come join us."
This gave Ramon a bit of time to talk to Daphne. "If you don't mind me saying so, you've spent too much time in your temple, Ramon. There are quite a few fighting women I know...perhaps more in the Viscount's Army than your Church Army. And the Freedom Patrol...I do believe that is all male. Taking up the sword is not just a job for us, though; it's a chance to be treated as equals and not just as stay-at-home mothers. That's why it's so exciting for me to be a full member of the Harvester's Heroes, and why in the Viscount's Standing Army, it's such a cause for excitement that the Viscount is apparently considering appointing the first female captain of the guard."
Soon, Jean-Marie returned to them with an elf dressed as a simple tradesman. Ramon had few encounters with elves, but this fellow seemed nothing like the aloof image of the noble elf he had expected. This elf was a sloucher who made no eye contact.
"You wanted to see me, I understand, about my skill in the mystic arts," Mezlo said. "I have used magic in the occasional odd errand, for a good enough cause -- but understand me that I cannot adventure. Not yet," he added, cryptically.

Day 16, turn 2 for Joaquim, Ximo, Marcel:
"I'll give you 315 gold for the potion," Txanton told them.
Without a firm handshake on the matter, but a spoken understanding that they were interested, the men from Greyhawk started to leave -- but just then, Ximo showed up!
Ximo had been hesitant to continue his training to a second day, as important as the infiltration of the cult seemed to be, but when he returned to the Consortium that morning, they seemed intent on having him meet with at least one more specialist first. Emmanuelle talked about this being important to his training...though Ximo could not help but wonder if there were an economic reason behind trying to push students into areas of specialization.
As soon as the carriage was on Tarry Road, Ximo had a good guess who the transmuter was he was being sent to talk to. He returned to Txanton's Alchemy Shop -- in time to run into Joaquim and Marcel!
"That's fine with me. Though I'm disappointed to see my first magic item sold like that. Easy come, easy go, I hope. Any other useful news? They've got me running around meeting these specialist wizards. Seems like lazy training, but at least it's easy," Ximo said, forgetting the ordeal Joaquim had told him about.
Unless the twins had anything interesting to say to him, Ximo went inside with Txanton to talk to the man about magic and such.
"That is wonderful news, Daphne. St. Cuthbert's teachings make no distinction between man and woman. He tells us that good sense is a grace granted to all and one we must use in our everyday lives. It is long past time the big men of our society realized it. Let me be honest, Daphne. I admire your courage, both in battle but also in every other part of your life. And I...I enjoy spending time with you. Your like no other woman I've met. And, well, nevermind. Here comes Jean-Marie with Mezlo."
Ramon stopped talking and was half-relieved he had been able to jump off the galloping train of thoughts his tongue had decided to let run free.
After Jean-Marie's introduction and Mezlo's words, Ramon looked the elf in the eyes and said, "Mezlo, I can assure you the cause we pursue is a good one. We cannot tell you what it is specifically, but I can say it will strike a blow against the Cult that has been terrorizing the city. You said you 'cannot adventure. Not yet.' What is holding you back? Does the White Sage have a hold on you? Or is there something else? We could use another wizard."

Day 16, turn 3 for Ximo:
Txanton told them they could come back later that day and collect their money from him, in whatever form they wanted (gold, platinum, or a gem).
Joaquim and Marcel left after telling him their preference, and Ximo was able to tell Txanton the real reason he was there in privacy.
"Oh yes...I was told to expect you..." Txanton said. "Of course, I've tried you out as an employee before for a day, didn't I?" His tone was cool, if not icy, and definitely not encouraging.
He talked to Ximo for well over an hour about alteration magic, Txanton's early desire to master transmutation, and how it led to his specialty of identifying and making potions. "Haven't adventured in so many years. Can never seem to get out of the shop. Not even to reach the Kron Hills, for that rare weed no one's procured for me yet..."
Several times, Txanton brought up his need for king's foil, which he'd told Ximo about sometime ago, as if it were Ximo's fault that the man still didn't have any. He clearly held a grudge and this interview was going nowhere, but Ximo rode it through to the end, when he was told to report back to the Consortium that "you're not ready to become a transmuter."

Day 16, turn 3 for Joaquim, Marcel:
The gate gargoyle allowed Joaquim to bring Marcel in as a guest again. The front garden was empty today, perhaps because the sky was now threatening rain. The inside clerk was Joaquim's least favorite, Koldobeka, but the man did not give Joaquim any guff today. "Yes, Vicent Concha is here downstairs today. Second door on your left. If he's not in that room, just go to the rear door and try the next room."
They went through the second door on the left, which led into a small empty office. There was, interestingly, only one other door, in the rear wall. In the next room was Vicent Concha -- floating on the ceiling!
"Oh no, you've come!" he said. "I was hoping I could experiment with this longer..." He was clearly wearing the magic ring and pointed his fist, with the ring on it, towards the floor before he started to float down. "As you can see, the item you had me identify is a Ring of Flying. I've never seen, or heard of anything, quite like it before. The command word is "Aerialus". You then point the ring in the direction you wish to fly and use that hand to steer yourself. You can speed up by opening your hand or slow down by closing your fist. Astounding..."
Now on the floor, Vicent went to hand over the ring -- but hesitated at the last moment. He seemed torn between some baser desire, and his duty to turn the ring over. Luckily, duty won out. "Here," he said casually, as he turned over the ring to Joaquim.

Day 16, turns 3-5 for Caltaran:
The sky was threatening rain when Caltaran crossed from the Inner Bailey, through the High Quarter, and into the Business Quarter on the city's west side.
The Library of Delleb was an average-sized building, half fitted stone and half mottle and daub, with a plain shingled roof. Only a single hanging sign out front designated this as "Library - Delleb".
Inside, lanterns sat at reading tables, arranged before a high desk that guarded the half-door in a low wall separating the closed stacks from the general public. Juliana Fabron, Prefect of Delleb and Head Archivist of the Temple of the Heavenly Virtues, had actually arrived there only minutes ahead of him and was still settling in. She wiped her nose on a handkerchief.
"Oh, Caltaran, good morning. Yes, I seem to be coming down with a cold. Oh, I could cast a spell to get rid of it, I suppose, but dare I ask the gods for a miracle to stop from sniffling? What can I help you with today, dear?"
Her expression turned more grave when Caltaran told her what he needed. "Please, do not speak the demoness' name so loudly here," she whispered. "I will find for you what I can. Since you are now a curate, you may come into the back aisles yourself and help me search."
They spent two hours searching, and finally found a grimoire called Witches of the North that contained an entire chapter on "demons with which the Arch-Witch Iggwilv did consort". Caltaran spent another hour reading through it. Here were entered dark names like Baphomet, Fraz-Urb-Luu, Graz'zt, Kostchichie -- and Lolth, Demon Queen of Spiders. The demoness was said to be so dark, so evil, that none who saw by daylight could invoke her powers. And that while some mad men dared worship her, it was mainly a race of dark elves that lived deep in the Underdark who called her their goddess.
This was as much information as Caltaran had by that afternoon (2 pm).

Too stunned to think straight, Joaquim only managed to stammer out a few additional questions for Vicent regarding limits of the ring. After receiving their answers they thanked the mage, Marcel pushing a dozen platinum coins into the man's hand, and departed his office. Back out by the clerk, Joaquim asked the insufferable man if he could make use of a room for magical testing. Begrudgingly, the petulant little git did indeed find them some private space.
The second the door was closed behind him, Marcel half-shouted, half-whispered, "We can fly?"
Joaquim nodded. "We can fly."
"I... I, just..." Marcel could just not finish a thought. "How can that be?"
"Magic." Joaquim grinned and held out the ring. "Here, try it out."
Marcel took the ring gingerly. It looked tiny in his large hands. "I don't think it will fit on my finger."
The big man held the ring up to his fingertip and it did indeed look like it would be too small. But a strange thing happened. The closer the ring got to Marcel's finger, the larger it seemed to grow, until it easily slid on.
"Magic," Joaquim said again.
Marcel grinned, held his hand up the ceiling as Vicent had instructed and spoke the command word. "Aerialus."
The big man shot upward and slammed into the ceiling, the impact making an unhealthy sound. He lay up there prone for some time, struggling to draw breath, the wind having been knocked out of him.
- - -
An hour later both Joaquim and Marcel were considerably more practiced with the ring. They could fly deftly around their testing chamber, and though it was a confined space, they at least felt comfortable moving around.
The pair left the Consortium and made for the Inner Bailey. It was time to discuss the assault on Ryemend with the Church. Along the way they talked about what to do with the ring.
"You should take it," Marcel said. "It's, you know... magic stuff. That's your thing."
"Eloquently put," Joaquim said. "But I've thought this through and you're going to take it."
"Eh?" Marcel had not expected that.
Joaquim continued. "Two reasons. One, if things get hairy, we both have good ways to escape. I can make myself invisible and you can fly away. Two, if we both need to fly, you at least can carry me. I am not trying to haul you around anywhere, you big lummox."
"I don't know what to say," Marcel said, dumbfounded.
"I know what you'll say."
Marcel cocked an eyebrow.
"You're hungry and we should grab something to eat on the way to the Bailey."

Day 16, turn 2a for Ramon:
"You give me much reason to hope that my gifts can yet make a difference in this world," Mezlo said, and the elf did lift his sad gaze to meet Ramon's piercing stare. "I had failed to make such a difference once, years ago. I will not speak today on those circumstances, so do not ask it of me. Suffice to say that I swore to serve men in as lowly a fashion as possible, and wound up here, serving drinks to them. I vowed to serve 100,000 drinks to men before I would forgive myself and let myself forget.
"You may be in luck," he continued, "for I have but 100 drinks left to serve. If my patrons stay thirsty, I might be able to aid you in a week's time. Thank you, Ramon. You have given me hope today, and I will not forget that."
Caltaran closes the book and then says "prefect Julianna let me tell you why I ask about this evil goddess. " caltaran then tells her about his encounter with the priest of loth and his dream the night before. Caltaran then asks " I have resisted his magic but did he curse me? If this is not then is this a future event for me?"
"Serve us all another round, Mezlo. And perhaps my friends and I can speed you nearer your quest. Hieroneous has need of your valorous service, I believe," Ramon paid for a round of drinks for the entire clientele and then left with Jean-Marie and Daphne. After they said their goodbyes and Ramon promised to stop by the Heroes' house, he headed for the Temple and his appointment with the elder priests of the Temple to report on his plans and make some queries.
Ximo took the time to walk back to the Consortium to renew the deposits of disdain he kept in his mind for petty men. Txanton's fixation on the acquisition of some minor ingredient in the face of Ximo's clear rise to greater things proved the man unworthy of his position and unworthy of any sort of apprentice-ship from Ximo. Ximo knew he was a great man and knew that it was just a matter of time before his name was whispered in the same breath with the name of...well, whoever the whispered great wizards were. He aimed a kick at a goose that had wandered into his path...
A block later, having hitched up his robes to better evade the snapping bill of the devil goose he had encountered, Ximo quickly ducked around a corner and made his way back to the Consortium. He figured he needed more training. He also wanted to know, once and for all, if there was a way to tell if a man was charmed.

Day 16, turns 4-6 for Ximo:
"...a spell of magic detection might pick up the charm," Emmanuelle was saying, as Ximo slipped back into his studies within the classroom of the Silver Consortium, "but then it might not. The presence of a long-term spell can often be mistaken for a residual magical presence from previously cast powerful magic, or might be masked by the presence of stronger magic entirely. The only sure way would be to cast a Detect Charm spell. Oh, certainly such a spell exists. There is a good deal more in the world of spellcraft than what you've seen in apprentice primers, Ximo..."
Emmanuelle spent the afternoon telling Ximo about new spells he might learn that were spells of the first order of power -- the ability to effect normal fires, to cast burning fire from his hands, to create dancing lights that can move about as the caster willed them to, and so on. She explained the spells to Ximo and answered his questions about them. There were apparently known 30 spells of the first order that Ximo could learn -- and he thought there had been only 14!
"We could extend your training to include new spells, if you can afford the additional costs involved. These spells vary in costs, from 100-300 gold, but they are simple spells and you might learn them in a day. Of course, if you are ready for your mission for the Consortium, your training will likely be on hold after today."
"I would prefer to undertake this mission with my training completed. The more pressing concern I have is this ability to detect a charm. Is this a spell someone in the Consortium is likely to possess? Who is the diviner you had planned for me to meet? If it'd be possible to meet that specialist next I think I should. My life may depend on this knowledge," Ximo said ominously.
"New spells are attractive but may have to wait. The cost is not insurmountable," he answered. "What else can we do today?"

Day 16, turns 5a for Caltaran:
"I cannot say for certain," Prefect Fabrion answered Caltaran. "Even a magic detecting prayer might not tell me if some lingering curse affects you. I could try it now...or, if you are truly concerned, you could return to the temple and ask for a curse-removing prayer to be said over you. Some steep sacrifice will be asked of you, though."

Day 16, turn 2b for Ramon:
There were not too many people at the inn that morning, so Ramon could only buy eight drinks (4 sp) to subtract off Mezlo's total. Ramon also noted that Mezlo neither spoke for nor against the White Sage, when Ramon had pressed him on their association.
Upon leaving, Daphne came with. "Wait, let me walk with you part of the way, Ramon," she said. Though she had not responded right away to Ramon's opening up about his feelings for her, it seemed clear she wanted to do so now. Or so Ramon thought initially. She still avoided it, discussing the weather instead, until they reached the High Quarter...

Day 16, turn 7 for Joaquim:
Back at the Consortium, Joaquim had to deal with that git Koldobeka again, the head clerk thinking he was lord of his own castle, or something. "Back so soon? An instructor for spell teaching? Of course you can schedule...oh. You want someone right now? Well, don't you think you're important? No one has free appointments right now. Do you have a preference as to who you would like to learn from...?"
Post by Ronny Serio on Feb 5, 2016 11:10:38 GMT -6
"It would seem presumptuous for me to be picky on both time and instructor," Joaquim said, deliberately refusing to acknowledge Koldobeka's slights. "I need to learn the spell today and I'm willing to a pay little extra to make it happen."
While he waited for an instructor to be found, Joaquim would locate some senior leadership and inform them of the raid on Ryemend being planned for the next day.
Caltaran says " if it is not too much trouble prefect a magic detect prayer might reveal if I have been bewitched. If not then it might be a foreshadowing dream. After this I have a funeral speech to review for tonight."

Day 16, turns 6 for Caltaran:
"Very well, Caltaran. Can you make a 10 gold piece donation to the library? I'll then invoke that prayer for you."
Caltaran, who was down to his last 10 gold, had to tell her he'd mull it over. He also had a speech to prepare and there was parchment he could use here. While he jotted down some notes, he noticed a tiny spider crawling across the library floor...

Day 16, turn 7a for Joaquim:
Joaquim was able to find the gnome Alfred Jemmy, who was quite friendly to Joaquim. "You need to talk to someone important, eh? Well, let's see what we can do about finding you someone even more important than me." Alfred came with Joaquim as they checked into some offices and soon found Ekaitz Escamilla, Joaquim's training instructor. The three of them talked about the Plan.
"Ryemend, eh?" Ekaitz said. "I understand the Temple of the Holier Than Thou's Standing Army was rebuffed at Ryemend by whatever is down there. Do you think they just did not have enough spell support to succeed?"
Joaquim also made sure they knew about the Strength spell he wanted to learn.
"That would normally take at least two days," Ekaitz said. "Your best bet is to find Quinton, if he's available. He's a fast teacher. If anyone has a chance of teaching it to you in one day, it's Quinton."
