I caught wind of this a bit earlier today. I like the DM's Guild concept in theory, but I do worry that we might have a repeat of the original problem with the OGL back in 2000 concerning the legal entanglements and the more pervasive problem of most of its content simply not being good. Still, nice to know that WotC is providing an avenue for self-publishing in this manner, even in a limited form.

Well, the first not-good thing that jumps out at me is that, for a System Reference Document, the file looks awfully like a PDF instead ...

A year or so too late, perhaps... but still very good news.
Yeah, there will be a flood of hastily-produced, amateur crapola like there was with 3e, but so what? That's what reviews are for. And sometimes crap is fun.

Part of me is happy, because the RPG shelves at my local game store are sort of barren and opening up third-party production of 5E will start filling those shelves again. Part of me is unhappy, because with the flood of new products will come a total loss of quality control much like what happened with d20 products. On the other hand, if one is discriminating in what one buys I suppose more choice is better than no choice. Here's to hoping for good stuff.

I’m sure it will be quickly hypertextualized by zealous fans. I love that I live in a world in which "hypertextualized" is a word. I must note, with some dismay, that the document/PDF/whatever in its current incarnation seems only partially complete; it is virtually devoid of feats, backgrounds, several class archetypes, and a few other things besides.

I’m sure it will be quickly hypertextualized by zealous fans. Due to my dyslexia, I read that as "hyper sexualized". Given the popularity of the first OGL, and the glut of mindless "splat books" that came of it, both words feel equally applicable, in their own way.

I’m sure it will be quickly hypertextualized by zealous fans. I have seen wikis with OGL content for 3.x and Pathfinder with the rules listed wholesale. A 5e OGL wiki — along with a house-rule wiki — is inevitable.
