Day 13, turn 1 for Caltaran:
The mundane chores had all been taken care of. Caltaran's curate robes fit him well. He had already taken care of paying off Winoc's armor. He had prayed for success at the Temple. He had one last supper with the "boys" -- Joaquim, Marcel, and Ximo -- at the Bronze Unicorn Inn that night. They had interesting stories to trade of recent events.
The next morning, Caltaran assembled his squad of six at the Inner Bailey and marched north to the outer wall of the city, bound for the north suburb of Ryemend.
On the east side of Ryemend, they found the ruins of an old, closed down Elemental School of Magic. The remains of a stone privacy wall, 7' tall, formed a rectangle around the old school grounds. Half of the wall was now missing, leaving ample room to simply step through onto the grounds.
The building was -- was being the operative term -- a two-story stone building, as rectangular as the curtain wall around it. However, now the upper floor had caved in and the side walls were leaning into the building, making it now more of a saggy trapezoid. There were large cracks running all through the building and it looked so structurally unsound that one might fear the whole thing would collapse like a house of cards if it was so much as touched.
There was a wide front entrance where two doors had once stood (they were lying, in pieces, in the doorway) and a squashed, triangular hallway led inside past sidewalls that had half-collapsed in on each other.
"We can take the front entrance, or go around back to a trap door," Semeragin said. "It hardly matters, as they both lead down almost to the same spot. Unless, of course, one of the entrances has been trapped again. Or both. It was a magical trap on the trapdoor, last time."
"Shall we form up into marching order, double file?" Adept Laetitia said. "And who will carry the light?"

Caltaran says, "lets go ahead and try the main entrance as it was said that the trapdoor was trapped last time. Marching order will be double file. We will go Semer and Nydia in the front rank. Latitia and myself in the second rank. Winoc and Ricardia will be the third rank. How about Latitia carrying the light unless we can see well from the third rank then Ricardia will carry the light. " Asking Latitia and Ricardia, "what blessings (magic) have you been granted today?"
(Caltaran has Detect evil, Cure light wounds X4; Hold person, slow poison, and spiritual weapon)
OOC: is Ximo part of this group too?

Day 13, turn 2 for Caltaran, Ximo:
"I can turn undead!" Ricarda answered proudly. "Oh, you mean spell-prayers? I cannot do those..." she said, sounding worried that she had upset Caltaran.
"I can invoke a prayer that will protect one of us from evil," Laetitia said.
The past two days had been a blur for Ximo, and now he was here again, back at the most dangerous place he had ever been in his life. Was avoiding reporting back to his liege for mundane work worth this?
The entrance led into a tunnel formed when the building collapsed in on itself at this central point. The tunnel led back into the building, and stairs that went down steeply. From this point, everyone would be seeing from Ricarda's lit torch.
The stairs led to a natural tunnel that ran down and around (south and then west), soon coming across a ladder set against the left hand wall that led up to a trapdoor. Semer and Ximo could confirm that this was the way they entered -- and fled -- during the first expedition.
The way was clear to where the tunnel turned right, but at that point the front rank stopped, having heard something up ahead around the corner, and Semer mouthed to Caltaran "wolves".
((Surprise? 2 vs. 6. The map shows all that Ximo and Semer know of the dungeon, with the X showing where you are now.))
Ximo was glad to be in the third rank with four armored fellows in front of him. He might have preferred a double rank behind as well, but two bodies encased in steel behind seemed a decent protection too. For this expedition he had memorized his web spell, his spell of enchanted slumber, and a spell that would allow him to detect magical emanations.*
He also remembered the wolves. They were probably dangerous now with no goblins to feed them. Once again, good thing the four armored people ahead of him made him a little more comfortable. For now he was content to let Caltaran take the lead. But he had made it very clear when he had agreed to go along that his role was not as a lackey on this expedition.
((* I'd like to be able to change these spells if he has learned any additional spells from the gnome that seem like good choices.))

Before entering the dungeon caltaran says. " so this mission is intelligence gathering and investigation. We are to determine if the cult is here. The leaders of the cult. Possibly if the black dragon that attacked the gates is here. With that said if we can handle any combatants great but if it gets too much we can always retreat. One last thing even though I have my orders we are a team and if you have opinions and thoughts bring them up. None of you are lackeys or henchmen. We will get through this by working together."
Currently caltaran acknowledges semer suggestion and then gets ready for combat He whispers to the front rank to move forward slowly.

Day 13, turn 2, rds. 1-2 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Nydia, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Semer and Nydia rounded the corner first, followed by the second rank. 10' up the corridor, they could make out five goblins yelling at two wolves for starting to bark. The goblins -- like orange, beardless dwarves -- seemed distracted by their own early warning system and did not notice the torch light to the south until Semer started to charge at them.
Semer was swift as lightning, and as deadly. Before anyone else could react, he threw his spear from 20' away and skewered a goblin, dropping it on the spot.
"Let me through!" Winoc was saying, wanting to move up with his crossbow.
Nydia shot her bow at the goblins, and her arrow landed in one of their shields.
The goblins held back at the intersection, but released the two wolves. They charged Semeragin as he drew his short sword. He held one at bay easily, slashing it with his sword and seriously wounding it, but the other bit at his armor and almost got a hold of his leg. The goblins held back and laughed, but one at the back began pounding on a drum loudly. Nydia dropped her bow and ran up beside Semer while drawing her flail from its hanger.
((Surprise rd. 1 Semer's to hit: 20-2, 3 dmg, Nydia's to hit: 12; rd. 1: Semer's to hit: 17 - 4 dmg, Semer's to be hit: 15, 5))

Day 13, turn 2, rds. 3-4 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Nydia, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Things went supernaturally silent over by all the goblins behind the melee combat. Caltaran received the satisfaction of watching the goblin who was drumming it stop and search the drum to see what was wrong with it.
Semer kept on the same wolf, slashing it again, but not enough to kill it. The seriously injured wolf hung back, but its companion went after Semer again, and was held at bay.
Laetitia and Ricarda moved up behind the front rank and cheered them on.
Winoc, on the other hand, paced back and forth in the third rank and stewed. "I can't use my crossbow without risking hitting our front rank!"
Nydia bashed the uninjured wolf with her flail, moderately injuring it.
Semer was on a roll -- he knocked the wolf he'd been fighting to the ground and it didn't get back up.
The remaining wolf nipped at Nydia, but was held at bay.
Nydia kept swinging at the wolf, but failed to land a good blow.
Three goblins stood ready to step in and join the fight if the last wolf fell. The one with the drum picked it up and ran further back up the tunnel away from the combat.
Ximo had a lit lantern now!
((rd. 3: Semer's to hit: 17 - 2 dmg, to hit Semer: 5, Nydia's to hit: 14 - 5 dmg; rd. 4: Semer's to hit: 16 - 1 dmg, to hit Nydia: 6, Nydia's to hit: 9))

Day 13, turn 2, rds. 5-6 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Nydia, Ricarda, Laetitia):
"Good call," Ricarda told Ximo, and she tossed her torch away, also freeing herself for combat.
Nydia was able to step over the body of the fallen wolf and flank the remaining wolf, which gave Caltaran room to push through and take Nydia's "corner spot".
Semer was still on top of this battle, stabbing the remaining wolf in the leg and leaving it seriously injured. Caltaran watched for an opening to finish it off, but the beast was still actively defending itself, and those jaws looked so intimidating.
The wolf tried to back off, but there were two goblins at its back now, threatening it with spears, but mainly trying to use them to skewer Nydia. And they were mighty good at it too -- they knocked her down with their spears, jumped on top of her, and stabbed her in the leg and in the face. Nydia couldn't have survived that onslaught.
The turn of the tide shocked everyone. Semer, reluctantly, still had the remaining wolf to deal with first, but he pummeled it over the head with a pommel and beaned it into being unconscious. Ricarda stepped up into the gap, so it was her and Caltaran to face the two goblins next. Ricarda only hit a shield, while Caltaran smashed a shield and delivered a hand-crushing blow to the goblin hiding behind it. A goblin from their second rank tossed a spear over his front rank at Semer, but missed everyone. The two goblins in the front rank had lost the ability to double team and it hurt their strategy as they moved only to defend themselves.
((rd. 5: Semer's to hit: 20 - 1 dmg, Caltaran's to hit: 5, to hit Nydia: 19 - 4 dmg, 16 - 5 dmg; rd. 6: Semer's to hit: 19 - 2 dmg, Caltaran's to hit: 19 - 1 dmg, Ricarda's to hit: 12, to hit Semer: 3, 7, to hit Caltaran: 1, to hit Ricarda: 10))
Ximo was out of his element when it came to injured people. But if he could help get Nydia out from under the others' feet it seemed a wise move. He was reluctant to use a spell, seeing this fight as one his companions could handle well, recent events notwithstanding.
He helped if he could get Nydia out of the way and continued to keep a look at to the rear when he could.

Day 13, turn 2, rds. 7-8 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Caltaran was a raging beast of vengeance, smashing a spear and crushing the head of one of the goblins. The remaining goblin in the front rank tried to strike him down, but could not get past Caltaran's shield. Even Ricarda blanched from this fury.
Meanwhile, Winoc and Laetitia covered Ximo while he crept in and dragged Nydia out. There were no signs of life left in her, though.
Despite the fact that they were hopelessly outnumbered, the two remaining goblins tried to gang up on Caltaran (the third had run off with his silenced drum). Caltaran could not get past two spears at once, but neither could they pierce his chainmail. Ricarda backed away a step, as if the heat of combat was too much for her.
((rd. 7: Caltaran's to hit: 20- 4 dmg, to hit Caltaran: 11, Ricarda's to hit: 6; rd. 8: Caltaran's to hit: 9, to hit Caltaran: 2, 9, Ricarda's to hit: 1))

Day 13, turn 2, rds. 9-10 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Caltaran's rage was nearly spent, and he had to stay in defensive mode as the two remaining goblins pressed him. Yes, he was able to speak again as the silence spell moved away from him. The goblins' spears rained down on his shield over and over, but failed to win purchase past it.
Ricarda still continued to fail to engage, so much so that Winoc was behind her goading her to "Fall back! Fall back and let me up front!"
Laetitia said a quick prayer over Nydia's body as Ximo checked her out. She did wear a backpack with a torch tied to the bottom of it, and had a small belt pouch at the girdle on her waist.
Caltaran still could not regain the offensive. Ricarda, finally, stepped back and Winoc came up. The goblins split their attacks against both men, but failed to hit either of them. Winoc nearly stumbled over a dead wolf, though, and failed to hit anyone.
Ximo was not sure how Laetitia would react to him pilfering Nydia's body, and he really wished she was not so observant.
((rd. 9: Caltaran's to hit: 4, to hit Caltaran: 6, 12; Ricarda's to hit: 6; rd. 10: Caltaran's to hit: 5, to hit Caltaran: 5, to hit Winoc: 9, Winoc's to hit: 1))

Day 13, turn 3, rds. 1-2 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Caltaran was getting closer, landing a glancing blow that bounced off the goblin's leather armor. He was making his goblin have to back away, which seemed a good thing.
Winoc was nearly hit by his goblin, but gave back as good as he got and they both stood their ground.
Ximo, keenly observing the scene, noted that, if their frontline fighters could just push the goblins back another 5', he or one of the clerical women could observe down the east passage and make sure no reinforcements were coming from that direction. So far, no one came from the north. Ximo whispered more stage directions to that effect.
It was then that Caltaran's foe lost all courage, turned, and tried to flee. Caltaran swung and struck the goblin in the back, but it was a light wound. Winoc finished it off though with a well-placed stab in the back.
The last goblin started a fighting withdrawal, moving the melee 10' north up the hallway. Now Ximo could comfortably see that the way was clear in both directions.
Caltaran delived a light blow to the remaining goblin -- at which point the goblin thew down his spear and fell to its knees in surrender.
((rd. 1: Caltaran's to hit: 11, to hit Caltaran: 9, to hit Winoc: 15, Winoc's to hit: 12, Caltaran's bonus to hit: 20 - 1 dmg, Winoc's bonus to hit: 19 - 5 dmg; rd. 2: Caltaran's to hit: 18 - 1 dmg))

Caltaran kicks the spear away from the goblin and looks for reinforcements he asks the group "how is Nydia and does anyone speak goblin. Let's find out what this goblin knows about the defences and leaders here. "
"I'd search that goblin if I were you, last time one of 'em pulled a dagger on me," Ximo said. The others had to look around a moment because initially they could not see where he had spoken from. But then they heard him give a bit of a grunt and saw him kneeling beside one of the dead goblins. He was now sitting back on his haunches tugging open the purse he had had to pull out from under the goblin's mass.
"And I'll interrogate the grubby beast once you make sure it's not got a hidden sticker."

Caltaran asks winoc to help force the goblin to his knees and searches the goblin. He then waits for his status of nydia and to let ximo do the interrogation. Caltaran asks Ricardia to watch the hallway for more goblins.

Day 13, the rest of turn 3 for Caltaran, Ximo, (Semer, Winoc, Ricarda, Laetitia):
Caltaran and Winoc did the searching. On their four goblins, they found a total of two concealed daggers, 8 silver pieces, and 14 copper pieces.
"I'm sorry...so sorry..." Ricarda said. She was leaning against the tunnel wall and holding herself while she looked down. "I froze up there, in the front rank."
"It could happen to anyone," Laetitia said. "Only let it happen once." Laetitia took up the job of watching for goblins.
Ximo's prisoner gave for a forced laugh. "You may have me, but your kind has already been sent running from our tunnels once, and you have had a sample of defeat this time already. When my brothers come for you, you will all be no more."
Post by dtspurrier on Sept 25, 2015 15:18:53 GMT -6
Caltaran moves over to ricarda and says "Letitia is correct and also remember your training. We are a team and we all know the risks. Trust me I have confidence you all will perform admirably."
Addressing the group "so do we press the attack and finish these goblins? Or do we take nydia's body out of here and come back the next day? Whichever decision we make I am not going to let her body stay here. "

Day 13, turns 2-3 for Joaquim:
Joaquim's audience with Mr. Higden had been short, but Ekaitz seemed to think it was productive. "Come, on to our next expert!"
With that, Ekaitz led Joaquim north through the Business Quarter to the gates that led to Ryemend. "It won't be a long side trip, I assure you," Ekaitz said. They followed the road into Ryemend, to the crossroads by the Crossroads Inn, and then headed east. Indeed, they were drawing closer and closer to the ruined Elemental School of Magic, under which Joaquim had just recently delved.
"Hmm?" Ekaitz said when confronted on that. "Oh, no, I am not taking you to the ruins. Not exactly, anyway."
Instead, they went to a lonely house across the road from the ruins. The house had a large yard, surrounded by a low (3') stone wall. Four laborers kept busy doing chores like raking and hoeing around a small garden, so anemic that it didn't seem to warrant so much work. None of these people had been here before, when the house across the road was deserted.
All four men watched Joaquim suspiciously, but Ekaitz paid them no mind. "The one we want is inside," was all he said in explanation as he led the way in.
The house was two stories, with stairs just inside at the foyer. "Lauracia!" Ekaitz called out. "We've come to see you!"
"Don't come up the stairs!" came what sounded like a girl's voice from upstairs. "I'll come down to you!"
A pale, but pretty young woman who appeared to be in her early 20s came bouncing down the stairs, shaking a long red braid behind her. Joaquim observed that she deliberately, though not obviously, skipped every third stair on her way down.
"I know why you're here," Lauracia said to Ekaitz, "but this isn't a good time. The Temple's forces have returned to the dungeon."
"This may not take long," Ekaitz said.
Lauracia sighed. "All right...let's see what he's got." She finally looked Joaquim up and down for the first time, her hands on her hips. "So, you think you might have what it takes to be an invoker? Do you? Well, do you?" she insisted as she reached out and shoved him. She kept trying to shove Joaquim back, as if goading him into a fight.
Ximo stood up, "First someone needs to kill this goblin. I do not have the strength to be sure of the job. You ask if we should withdraw? Of these neophytes? Do you think the Church leaders will be pleased to see you abandon a mission so quickly? Adventuring is dangerous. She has served her gods."
