I have three questions regarding Frank Frazetta, and I would much appreciate any answers to them: 1. I seem to remember reading that Gary liked Frank Frazetta's artwork. Can anyone confirm this? 2. I also seem to remember reading that Gary wished he could have hired Frank Frazetta to do art for the AD&D books, but unfortunately could not afford it. Can anyone confirm this? 3. Who owns the rights to Frazetta's works, and what is their contact information? Thanks a bunch!

1. I seem to remember reading that Gary liked Frank Frazetta's artwork. Who doesn't like Frazetta? Some might object to it on moral grounds, but I would be surprised if you can find a single gamer who doesn't think Frazetta's work is totally bad-ass.

I'm normally kinda cool towards Tolkien (I admire his work more than I actually enjoy it). But if somebody ran a Middle-Earth game and said "I'm basing the feel of my Middle-Earth off of Frazetta's LotR portfolio" I would be all like "Hell yeah! Pass me the dice!". Geoffrey's question really interests me. Back in the early 80's when D&D had it's moment in the sun and TSR was a multi-million dollar concern with a fleet of 70 cars they couldn't afford Frazetta? Maybe the issue was something else? Oh, what might have been.

You'd think if Molly Hatchet could afford him....then again, I think they just re-used existing pictures (mostly from Kane novels)

You'd think if Molly Hatchet could afford him....then again, I think they just re-used existing pictures (mostly from Kane novels) I remember people in college (Early 90's) mocking Frazetta as "Van art". Sadly I don't think he was appreciated outside of fantasy fandom until relatively recently. He did a kick-ass movie poster for From Dusk Till Dawn that stupidly was rejected by the studio. He also did a rejected but great poster for a very low-budget 1986 Mad Max rip-off called America 3000. That rejection is particularly baffling as his painting probably cost more than anything else in the bargain-basement production. Anyway, I highly recommend the Frazetta documentary Painting With Fire if you can find a copy. He was one incredible artist.
