Did a short notice test game with a friend of a "historical" scenario from my current D&D campaign recently -- this was several weeks ago; what follows is my email report to my gaming group made right after the fact. Meant to post it then but got distracted...
The Goblin horde under King Rebemuz, supported by a unit of Ogres and one of Hobgoblins, is raiding in great force into the Northland Kingdom. The Maerling (i.e. Viking) Warlord Ingvar Lodbrokson leads out a small force of tough Maerlings and a force of Maladominian levies (locals) to meet them near the village of Brillon.
Note: I was very spotty on photos. Spent most of the game trying to remember how to play it!
The Goblins line up Zulu style. They are, uh, numerous.
The Northland army uses a hill to form up on.
Maybe the hill will hide us.
The goblins advance. They are crafty...their warg cavalry breaks wide to the right around a wood (off camera). When the Maerling elite right turns to face them to receive an expected charge, the goblin witch doctor lightning bolts down their line, killing over half of them.
It's our turn next lads! (On the left)
The ogres come up the center
From the hill, the elite Maerling left charges wildly at the Hobgoblin unit -- and is soon surrounded. Center, the other Maerling force under Ingvar hits the Ogres hard. But the Goblins are carrying the rest of the field...
Last stand of the Maerling left. Thunir Ingvarson earns his place in Valhalla (and a very short wait to cash in on it):
But! The Northland cavalry arrives late, hitting the Goblins from behind. Their charge was devastating.
As the Northlands commander, I capitulated soon after; two of my 3 good units were crushed and the Goblin horde was still too numerous for the very effective but small cavalry unit to hope to win.
The game was very much scraped together last minute but a lot of fun. I have a bunch of work to do making unit trays, more terrain, etc. We did a lot of expedients (like scraps of magnet for units to ease movement) that worked nicely. The two hills were tests I just painted that morning. Definitely getting there, but a lot of work on terrain left to do.
