Okay, time to get this train rolling again. I will be passing out playtest files to interested parties, chapter by chapter. If you think you can contribute, what I'm looking for is:
Proofreading, grammar, English language stuff.
Systems testing, anything you can do to try to break the game.
Anything relevant relating to Holmes or J. Eric Holmes's writings that you feel might have an impact on the rules as written.
Unclear rules, examples needed.
The thing you have to remember at all times is that Compleat is not Holmes + OD&D + Greyhawk + Strategic Review. Compleat is an extrapolation of Holmes Basic and JEH's other writings, and what we have been able to gather about his games.
Classes like the illusionist and so on won't necessarily be the same.
Some rules that don't feature in said writings may not appear, like strongholds for player characters - not that player characters can't build strongholds if they want to, but it's not formalised in the rules.
I'll be posting notices from time to time as chapters are ready. If you're interested, PM me. Anyone who chimes in with something that makes it into the book will get their name into the credits. Anyone with a reasonably substantive input will get a contributor's copy when it's published.
Although there's no way I can respond individually to all the proof readers, I want to thank everyone who has already sent in comments on Chapter 2 (Characters)! It's amazing how much my eyes miss after they've been staring at these pages for a year or so. You'll find that some of your comments won't be incorporated - usually because there are other reasons why things are the way they are in the text - all of them are valuable and make me question my writing with a new perspective.
Chapter 3 (Adventures) has gone out, but there's still plenty of time to add your thoughts on Ch. 2 if you haven't had a chance yet. By the way, Chapter 3 is actually Chapter 4, the real Chapter 3 is Spells. That's coming next.
PART 5: ENCOUNTERS is ready. This is a bit of light relief before that monster monster chapter (no, that's not a typo, but if you spotted it you should be proofreading this). PM me if you want a copy and if you think you can contribute!
As always, please don't distribute these drafts to avoid tarnishing Dreamscape Design's reputation for impeccable layout.
