Day 14, turn 3 for Axen:
Axen trailed behind. If the man knew Axen was following him, he didn't seem to care. This pursuit went on for three blocks before the scarred man caught up to Zorione. She tried to talk to him, but he walloped her suddenly with a sap! She went down and the man hovered over her (and 60' ahead of Axen).
Ramon walked with them back to the now-extinguished home of the Heroes.
"I had been counting on the Heroes helping with the attack on Dieg Manor that I am to lead. That shortens the preparation time, assuming you all are willing to join us."
Ramon stopped and his face fell, "I don't know your rules, but I'm not sure I can go with you to the Celene border. The assault on the stronghold and its aftermath - I just do not think I can leave to make that trip with you."
Ramon would see what the others had to say about that and then head back to the Temple to check up on the reputations of Joaquim and Marcel.

Day 15, turn 14 for Ximo:
The carriage ride began with a discussion of cheese. "It's unicorn cheese," Robert said. "No, I'm just playing with you; it's goat cheese, but -- ah! -- what goats they breed in the Lortmils, and how excellently the Dwur age their cheeses! You might not think of cheese when you think of dwarves, but I do. Here..." and Robert even unwrapped part of his wheel and cut a slice for Ximo. Ximo was so famished from having skipped his mid-day snack!
There was much banter, mixed with cheese trivia, and only slowly, after about a half-hour's ride, did the topic come around to enchantment or charm spells. "You don't want this life, Ximo," Robert said with what seemed like sudden frankness. "Charm spells are a potent tool, but they arouse terrible suspicion in others. In a city like this, an ambitious man with charm magic could accomplish, well, accomplish anything. I'm lucky; I have a reputation for being too lazy and ambitious-less to accomplish anything like that. But an enchanter spends most of his time on his reputation. He has no time for adventure. No time at all..." Robert said, with a bit of a ruefulness to his voice.
The entire carriage ride lasted just over an hour before finally depositing Ximo outside the Silver Consortium, where Emmanuelle was patiently waiting.
"Well?" Emmanuelle asked Robert as Ximo got out of the carriage.
Ximo's face went red at Robert's verdict. He tried to hide it by ducking his head a bit as he walked past Emmanuelle and into the Consortium. By the time he was through the gates he was telling himself that whatever he had been evaluated for was beneath him. So he waited for Emmanuelle to come back and see if she had anything else for him. Once they were done he planned to see if he could meet with someone in charge of the Consortium. He had some things to report and wanted to make plans for his penetration of the Cult with the help of Jaggers. It needed to be set in motion quickly before the gnome had a chance to shake off the charm spell.
Axen charged straight into the man from behind, hoping to knock him to the ground with a tackle to the back of the knees. Axen knew his strength and was pretty confident that the man would fall over, and then he intended to grab his ankle and hold the man down with a submission hold until he got some answers.

Day 14, turn 3, rds. 1-2 for Axen:
Axen charged straight into the man, but came up short as the man heard Axen coming and leapt an inch clear out of Axen's grasp.
"I'll teach you!" the man said, turning and trying to wallop Axen with the sap in his hand -- but Axen rolled out of the way and the sap only disturbed the dirt on the street as it hit the ground.
Axen rolled up onto one knee and came at the man again, trying to grapple and pull him down, but was kicked back. The brute came at him again, but this time managed a glancing hit that Axen barely felt.
Zorione was about 20' away, screaming for help.

Day 15, turn 15 for Ximo:
"The day is still young enough for one more interview," Emmanuelle said. "We could send you to our guild transmuter and see if he thinks you are ready for specialization in his field."
Ximo made his intentions clear to her that he wished to see the Consortium's leaders about infiltrating the cult.
"So you've decided to undertake the mission after all," she said, sounding impressed. "Of course, that should take precedent over your training. If you are prepared to wait until tomorrow to continue training, I'll try to arrange your meeting with our leaders instead."
"Perhaps we can manage both," Ximo suggested. "But, please, let's start with this meeting. The planning may take some work."
Ximo knew that they needed to find a way to get Jaggers to help him join the Cult without raising the Cult's suspicions. If they knew Jaggers had been captured then they might already know something about Ximo. Perhaps Jaggers had a co-conspirator that could be used to get Ximo into the Cult?

Day 15, turn 19 for Joaquim, Marcel:
Marcel, unaccustomed to the Silver Consortium, followed Joaquim past the talking gargoyles at the gate (at which point Joaquim had to explain Marcel was his guest) and past a group of all-aged students reading in the garden. They spotted a group of tradesmen talking with someone who looked like a wizard at the tradesmen's entrance, but Joaquim wanted the front door.
There was a different clerk inside the main entrance, but this one didn't seem to like Joaquim anymore than the other guy. Why were all the clerks here so snooty?
"Magic item identification...let me see if anyone is available for that...no, I'm sorry, the last diviner of the day left two minutes ago."
It was a frustrating diversion, but the two men from Greyhawk quickly divined that, if the clerk was telling the truth, only one man could have left the guildhall that recently and not passed them on his way out. So they went outside, and confronted the wizard who had been talking to the tradesmen.
The wizard wore a tall hat and robes, looked to be in his mid-40s, and had bushy black beard with only steaks of silver in it. "I am the diviner you seek," the man said, after they had explained themselves. "Vicent Concha, to be precise. But I am unable for spell casting at this time. Perhaps, first thing in the morning? A magic ring, you say? Yes, feel free to bring it in. You're a guild member, I presume, in which case my services will only cost you 50 gold. Good day, gentlemen."

Day 14, turn 3, rds. 3-4 for Axen:
Axen managed to get himself wrapped around one leg and drove the man off-balance. The man tried to shake Axen off and beat him off, but Axen blocked the sap from coming down on him each time. "Get off me, you little freak!" the man growled angrily.
A whistle blew somewhere nearby, probably from a shopkeeper woken by Zorione's screams and intent on summoning a patrol to either aid her or shut her up.
Axen only redoubled his efforts, and finally brought the man to the ground. The man was still swinging, but came nowhere close to hitting.
They heard the sound of armored men approaching from up the street.
"I've gotta get outta here!" the man grumbled.
((rd. 3: Axen's to hit: 14, to hit Axen: 7; rd. 4: Axen's to hit: 19, to hit Axen: 5-2))

Day 15, turn 16 for Ximo:
Emmanuelle was not gone long before she returned to find Ximo and told him, "They're ready to see you. This way."
She led him down a hallway, turned left, and opened a door onto a staircase. If Ximo was not being confused by some magic about the place, then this was likely the corner tower of the building. Instead of going up, they went down back to the ground floor. Here, she touched a door and it made a bing noise. A moment later, the door opened on its own.
"If your plans have not been changed by then, I'll see you tomorrow for classes, Ximo," Emmanuelle said, and she left him there.
The room behind the door was small -- a plain, 15' x 20' room, lit by a soft magical glow emanating from the ceiling. The wizards Saturnino and Searos were sitting at a table with one other, empty chair.
"Come in and sit, Ximo the Humble," Saturnino said. "We have much to discuss with you."
"We appreciate your willingness to work with us on this bold plan," Searos said.
"It seems Jaggers is still our best bet to infiltrate the Cult. It is likely that he has a co-conspirator within our ranks, but whomever it is, he is shielded from our ability to detect him."
"We have a plan where we make it look like you help Jaggers escape. We can provide you with spell back-up to make it appear you were capable of doing so. So long as Jaggers stays charmed and under your control, you can stay by him until the Cult comes to claim him."
"Either to bring him back into the fold, or to silence him."
"An alternative to that plan is that we send you with someone magically disguised to look like Jaggers. You'd lose any value of having Jaggers present with you, but your back-up might then be more reliable if you get into a pinch."
"Of course, if you can come up with a better alternative, or an improvement on one of those plans, we would love to hear it."
"My concern, and one I'm sure you understand," Ximo began. "Is that Jaggers will break free of the charm at the most inopportune moment. And I will run out of ways to test his friendship and preserve his loyalty. I think we have only a day or two. But I think it essential that I complete my training before taking on this mission. I'd like to put the disguised Jaggers plan in our pocket for the moment. I'd like to see if I can convince him to do this willingly."
Ximo came to a decision. As he stood up from his seat he said, "Incidentally, in the current climate, it would be really useful if there were a spell that would allow us to divine if someone were under the effect of a charm spell. But spilled milk and all that. I would like to talk to Jaggers. A private conversation and I will try to win him over to helping me, charmed or not."
They led him to where Jaggers was being held and once the door was open, Ximo said to the other wizards in a tight and clipped tone, "I'd like to talk to the poor gnome in private."
Once he was in the room and the door was closed his first job was to figure out if Jaggers was still charmed, "Hello, my friend! I'm sorry it's been a while since I visited. Those arrogant wizards wouldn't let me come see you. But never mind that. I'm here now. And I brought you some cheese. I don't know if you like it but I had some of it and thought I might like to share it with my friend Jaggers. A warning though, it's strong stuff."
Ximo shared the cheese he had kept from his ride with the enchanter. "I was wondering if you'd be willing to tell me where your spellbook is. The Consortium is looking for it and I want to get it before they do. That way I can keep it safe from them until we clear up this whole mess of your detention."

Day 15, turn 20 for Joaquim, Marcel:
The men from Greyhawk made their way to Tarry Road and the alchemical shop of Txanton. "You're in time, gentlemen, I was going to close up shop in about another quarter of an hour. What can I do for you?"
They showed him the potion. "Hmm...oh, this is interesting. You people bring me the most interesting potions. For my usual fee of 19 gold, I can tell you what this potion is. Did you wish to wait, or come back in the morning?"
Post by Ronny Serio on Jan 25, 2016 11:03:17 GMT -6
When Txanton told them that it might take several hours to identify the exact nature of the potion, Joaquim and Marcel decided to return in the morning rather than wait. The hour was getting late, so the pair made their way back to the Bronze Unicorn. They would linger in the common room for a while this night, celebrating their good fortune, and waiting for Ximo to arrive so they could fill him in on the plan for dealing with the cult.

Day 15, turn 17 for Ximo:
"...and that's where I keep my spellbook," Jaggers said truthfully. "I hope that helps you!"
"Indeed it does my friend. When I leave here I will get it for you," Ximo answered with a smile. He lowered his voice to a whisper, "The Consortium has been forcing me to do their dirty work and I am fed up. It's time for you and me to make them pay."
"That sounds good and right to me, dear friend, but what can we do? I am a helpless prisoner. If only I were free, and we could fetch my spellbook together. Is there any chance of that...?"
"There is. I have a plan for your escape. When the chance presents itself be ready to flee with me. I dare not tell you more, lest they capture me and try to punish you further."
Ximo paused and thought a moment.
"If I knew who your allies were I could enlist their aid. Is there anyone who could provide us a place to hide until we were able to join the Cult?"
"I'm not sure...as you'll recall, we last discussed that I was given messages of where to come for meetings with the cult, and that I was not actually encouraged to socialize with any of them. But places to hide would not be a problem. I know many Noniz in the city who would harbor us gladly."
"Even though you've been accused of working to destroy the city?" Ximo asked.
"Blood is thick, I think is the human saying for that," Jaggers said. "Noniz look out for our own kind."
"Hmmm. And they'd be willing to shelter me? There's at least one gnome working with the Consortium.
"What about this? Do you think if the Cult knows you have escaped they will look for us? What if we went looking for them? I've heard they have a base under Ryemend. Or what if we went to Dieg Manor and asked for an audience?"
Ximo hoped Jaggers could get him into the Cult quickly. He had no idea how long the charm would last and no sense of what might happen when Jaggers was free of the spell. Maybe he could trick him into having the spell cast on him again?
Either way, he was satisfied that Jaggers would come with him when he "broke him out" and then they could get into the Cult after that.

Day 15, turn 17a for Ximo:
"Well...I assume they would," Jaggers said about shelter, backpedaling only slightly. "I mean, I trust you implicitly. Why wouldn't they?"
"I've heard the same rumors," Jaggers said about going looking for them. "The Dieg Manor one was confirmed for me on my second initiation meeting with the cult. The manor was mentioned to me, but I was told never to come there unless personally invited to. The rumor about Ryemend I only heard at the Consortium, that someone was occupying the ruins of the old magic school there. I didn't even put two and two together that it could be the same cult. Maybe that's where we should go!"
Axen used his full strength to keep the man pinned down and shouted for help. He knew some of the town guardsmen and also knew that many remembered when he slayed the beast a week and a half prior. He hoped that his reputation would precede him.
