I was completely blown away by this rabid, wailing assault of a movie. It's absolutely astonishing that a film with this much raw speed and power was made by a man in his 70s. George Miller hits the ground running and shows younger action directors how it's done. It also managed the balancing act of being very simple...yet not stupid. Parts of it felt like an old 2000 A.D. comic brought to life. Good show, Mr. Miller, good show.
So now I'm itching for some gaming in a Mad Max mode. Is there anything like the old Games Workshop DARK FUTURE of the Milton Bradley THUNDER ROAD still in print? How is the new CAR WARS? On the RPG front, I've downloaded ATOMIC HIGHWAY but haven't read it yet.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You're right, Mad Max Fury Road was both an awesome action movie, and a pretty d**ned good Mad Max movie.
I remember Dark Future from back in the day, but never heard of Thunder Road before. Looking it up, now I have to have it.
And I thought the new Car Wars was just a reprint of the old Car Wars. Did they actually do a new edition, with new rules?

I played it a few times as a junior-high kid back in the 80's and remember having fun. Every time I try to buy the new "Cheap" version the gaming store is sold out.

Amazon seems to have it in stock (unless you're trying to support your FLGS). We played quite a bit of CW back in high school, though we probably spent more time designing cool cars than we did fighting battles.

Did they ever do a version of CW that used miniatures?

Parts of it felt like an old 2000 A.D. comic brought to life. Absolutely! Cursed Earth, here we come! This is somehow the best film I've seen in a good while, and it's actually quite hard to pin down why. Clearly nothing to do with the formula, as that's been used in countless other films. This is great because of the way it was done, not what was done. Did they ever do a version of CW that used miniatures? Matchbox!

Also HAPPY FEET (1 & 2), BABE: PIG IN THE CITY, and the medical drama LORENZO'S OIL. His career is all over the map. The only thing his movies have in common is quality.

1. I heard that the new Mad Max movie had essentially no plot, but was basically a two-hour car chase.
2. I think the "new" Car Wars was indeed just a reprint. (Steve Jackson has done a couple of these: Boxed set Car Wars, ziplock version original Ogre reprint.) No version with minis that I can recall.

1. I heard that the new Mad Max movie had essentially no plot, but was basically a two-hour car chase. Yes. The plot is very, very simple (A renegade lieutenant and a harem of sex-slaves flee a warlord's petty empire of three Warhammer 40K-meets-Sodom-in-an-old-Bible-Movie city-states. A captured and weakened Max escapes at the same time. They meet. They get chased.) but it's told with great skill and even beauty and throws a lot of action movie conventions on their heads. What's the scale of Car Wars? Like, could I play it with, say, Matchbox and Hot Wheels without having to do a lot of conversion? Could I play it with those 30mm scale toy cars they sometimes have at Toys R' Us (I already got a bunch of those for HeroClix). The old CW I remember playing from the 80's used itty-bitty counters (Cars were about 1" long and 1/2" wide, IIRC).

Rules for making 3D terrain and using larger models appeared in one of the Autoduel Quarterly magazines, I believe; I'll see if I can track down which issue (they're available in PDF from Steve Jackson Games). If you're thinking of making Fury Road style cars to play with, though, then this online article might be of interest.

There were indeed official miniatures for Car Wars, but they were the same scale as the cardboard chits; there was no "miniatures version" of the game, to my knowledge.

I just saw it again, and it was just as good as the first time. The Blu-Ray release is supposed to have a black-and-white version of the film as well. Can't wait. Now I just need to get my hands on a copy of Thunder Road and house rule the heck out of it.

Ahmahgerd, an action movie made for adults. Haven't seen one in a while. Not as good as the reviewers say... But good enough.

Now that I have seen both the 2-D and 3-D versions, I would recommend the 2-D . A lot of the cool little visual details get blurred out in the 3-D.

Finally saw it this weekend.
My wife and I loved it. it was the MAD MAX movie that always should have been, like the Platonic form of Mad-Max. At least for us. We like the action more than the angst.
To me, this is a movie to see on the big screen one more time before it goes to video.
We just really like action flicks.
Hey that's got me thinking: I wonder if there is some kind of a game I could play that would allow me to simulate that feeling? One that really used my imagination and allowed me to hang out with other people imagining things out together with them?
Oh, yeah! Now I remember.
