In my 5E game I need to start a new character, and I was thinking about a Warlock.
(1) We're running Princes of the Apocolypse, the Elemental Evil module, and I thought it would be cool to try out the new Elemental spells.
(2) I ran a standard Wizard before, and thought I'd go with a differnt twist on spellcaster. Warlock seemed more fun than Sorcerer, since Sorcerer seems to have that wild magic thing. I dislike wild magic.
So ... I was thinking that I have access to the greatest minds of our age right here on these boards, and I might as well mine that wisdom.
What tips and advice can you give me about the 5E Warlock? What options should I pick, what spells work the best, how can I maximize the fun factor?

It's funny that you ask this--I made a warlock for fun when I got the books. I've always liked this class, at least on paper, since I've never actually played one. IMO, they're one of the most interesting classes to evolve in the past few editions of the game. I like Pacts of both Blade and Tome, especially how their appearance reflects the nature of your Patron. As for Patrons, for me that was an easy choice: The Great Old One, particularly Great Cthulhu, though I toyed with what it might look like to have Azathoth as a patron... In the end I decided on a dragonborn warlock, enPacted to Great Cthulhu via the Pact of the Tome. I loved the idea of turning the dragonborn stereotype both on its head and against itself. The Awakened Mind ability pared with others like Beguiling Influence, Gaze of Two Minds, Eye of the Rune Keeper, Book of Ancient Secrets and access to spells like dissonant whispers, phantasmal force, dominate person, and warlock-specific spells like poison spray, charm person, crown of madness, enthrall, etc., he could dominate, control, and torment targets in any situation without ever touching them. However, he was still a drabonborn. His initial overwhelming encounter with Great Cthulhu that initiated the Pact left him a loyal servant with one, secret, burning desire: to grow in power until he could overthrow his Master and take his place...

Very cool. I hadn't considered a Dragonborn, but I like the concept. I've found a nice thread on the WotC boards where someone has posted all kinds of Warlock stuff. May be worth a look, as he tries to indicate good choices and "trap" choices. community.wizards.com/forum/player-help/threads/4133456

Warlock seemed more fun than Sorcerer, since Sorcerer seems to have that wild magic thing. I dislike wild magic. Not exactly. There are two kinds of sorcerors in the core book: one gains it's power from wild magic, one from it's dragon blood (and he has no wild magic at all).

All I can add is that they are a pain in the ass to DM lol. That could be a bonus. I like to give my DM a hard time. Turns out that another guy in the group also wanted to play a Warlock. I wonder if having two Warlocks is twice the fun or twice the pain....

Probably twice the pain for your dm lol. I found a way to deal with the warlock in my game though. He died in the moathouse in T1. It seems ogres like warlocks even less than I do
