Joaquim wasn't willing to risk trying to slip in behind the cultist; he wasn't nimble enough for that kind of work. Instead he'd look for a window that he could spy through.
Marcel clasped forearms with Trazen before setting off. "Joaquim's still out there somewhere. I should track him down." With that he, and his new bow if nobody stopped him, started toward the temple. Finding his invisible friend was going to be a bit of a trick, so Marcel resolved merely to make himself easy to find. For now, he'd go get a closer look at those statues.

Caltaran says to gutzi "I saw the dragon fly over the gate but didn't know where it went afterword. Why would the cult strike now? Who controls it? Are the cult doing this for violence? Mayhem? Or are they looking for something? After completing my training that is what I am going to investigate and find these answers. "
Caltaran walks around investigates the statues and the bodies.

Day 9/turn 6 for Caltaran, Ximo, Joaquim, Marcel:
Caltaran examined the bodies, as many other clerics were doing. The wounded were already un-wounded, thanks to quick spells, but the dead and the petrified...
"Twenty dead, fifteen petrified," Caltaran overheard Father Bureau reporting to Prefect Gaizka Alamilla.
"It could have been worse," Gutxi said to Caltaran. "The Dracolisk had been one of the chief weapons of the Cult of the Flaming Eye, all those years ago. The monster was supposed to have been slain."
Caltaran spotted Marcel on the scene. Marcel had managed to leave with the borrowed longbow, forgotten in the confusion. The petrified victims may have been the most horrible thing he'd ever seen. Every face looked contorted in fear at the moment of becoming stone.
Meanwhile, Ximo examined the dead outside the bailey. The victims were men and women from the congregation -- middle class laborers and tradesmen wearing their finest Godsday clothes, freshly slashed and stabbed until dead, or allowed to bleed out until dead. The attackers were poor mercenaries, their armor old and worn, sometimes looking older than the young men who died in them. The attackers had sun-darkened skin and some of them looked to be Rhenee.
A sergeant of the guard had taken command of the scene at the south gate. "Move these bodies inside the bailey; we need to make this street passable again!" he ordered. Indeed, street traffic was halted on either side of the scene, with pedestrians and cart peddlers waiting to cross, mixed with anxious survivors waiting to find out if their loved ones were still alive inside. "And just pass through that darkness spell! It won't hurt anyone!"
Also meanwhile, Joaquim found a window where he could observe the leather-clad cultist throw slide onto a bench to rest. A man dressed like some kind of tradesman, but wearing a black hood, was throwing his arms around in some kind of excited gestures. Then the hooded man ran to the windows and began throwing the shutters closed. Joaquim got a good look at the man's lower face and goatee beard.
((Marcel's random chance of keeping the bow: 41, 19))

Caltaran says " the records never mentioned a dracolisk at all in this history of the cult of the flaming eye. What else has not made it to the records? This can be vital in our investigation and be able to help out future plan of attacks. "
Seeing Marcel he asks the man to come over here. He asks " tragic attack indeed these cultists are going to be stopped. Marcel does your friend Joaquin know anything about the creature who attacked us. Also are you injured during the attacked. "

Ximo left the dead outside the wall. He made sure to appear as an inscrutable wizard as he walked right through the middle of the blackness. He made for the petrified victims and carefully examined them. If his suspicions about their opponents was correct, he suspected the whole attack had been largely illusory. He would attempt to disbelieve the petrification, though he wondered what the effect of such a deed would be.

Marcel could feel the sorrow emanating from the petrified victims. The horror of it threatened to overwhelm him. It was a relief when Caltaran arrived and drew him back from his mourning.
"No," he told the cleric, his voice distant. "I wasn't hurt." He paused a moment before answering the priest's other question. "Unless Joaquim has heard something from his wizard friends, we've never seen such a thing. You can ask him if you can find him. He's around here somewhere, invisible."

Caltaran says "hopefully there is a wizard or our high clerics here who could dispel this petrification magic which possibly could save these people. Well we could look for Joaquim. Also ximo is here too."

"Ah, yes," Marcel said, still sedate and distracted, staring at the statue before him. "So he is. Well, there's a wizard for you. Perhaps he can tell you more about the dragon. Joaquim will turn up eventually."
Profound curiosity overrode the warrior's apprehension and he set his hand gently on the stone face of what was once a beautiful young woman.

Day 9/turn 7 for Caltaran, Ximo, Marcel:
Subdeacon Gutxi Azarola did not hide his comments from the nearby Marcel. "There was never any official listing of every monster encountered in the dungeon under Dieg Manor. Why bother, since they were dead?"
Prefect Gaizka Alamilla was still nearby, overheard Caltaran, and came over to admonish him. "Lower your voice, man. Even our high priests have not the power to transmute stone to flesh; do not give anyone false hope."
Ximo joined them, having walked safely through the magical darkness (sentries began to move freely back and forth through the darkness once Ximo had).
Ximo examined the statues and tried his hardest to see through this as an illusion -- but the stone still felt real to his open hand.

Caltaran says to the prefect "then perhaps there is a cure for this in another way, through alchemical or from magicuser spells then. Either way we must do something."
Caltaran then looks to these statues gets some courage and sayto the prefect "once my training is complete I am requesting to journey to dieg manor. Not only am I going to try to recover the body of Vincent and tain but also determine if the dragon fled back there. This creature and the cult need to be brought to justice and pay for their crimes. "

Joaquim hated to put himself in danger like this, but if he went back to find reinforcements, there was a possibility these cultists would slip away. He wouldn't risk that. Moving back around to the door, Joaquim first tried the handle, to see if it was unlocked. If it wasn't he would bang forcefully and then move back several paces. Either way, if the door opened, he would toss his Sleep spell at whoever was inside.
Ximo joined the discussion and did his best cryptic wizard impression, he figured that as his powers grew it was his job to play the part.
He tucked his arms into the sleeves of his robe and spoke, "What we saw was no dracolisk, though the certainty of these people that they saw such a creature was their misfortune. It was but an illusion. As were some of the attackers at the south gate. Do we know who first declared its vision gaze could petrify? That person might be in the service of the Cult. I will consult with my colleagues of the Consortium to see what can be done. But one of our opponents is a powerful illusionist."
Ximo then walked over to the other wizards he saw conversing across the Bailey. He would share what he knew with more detail and humility with them.

Marcel could understand Ximo's denial. The tragedy before him was too profound, better to simply believe it wasn't real. But Marcel could feel the girl's stone cheek under his hand. Could she see him? Could she sense his touch? Did she have any awareness of this terrible fate? He hoped not.
Something in Caltaran's exchange with the Prefect drew Marcel away from his fascination and he approached the priests. "You may not have the power to help these people here, but there are those in the Free City who do. High Priests or Archmages. It is said that they can do anything. Surely, they could fix this."

Caltaran listens to Marcels response and heads over to one of the statues. He has encountered illusion magic in the prison. He tries to disbelieve in this "turning to stone magic and that this person is alive but not conscious.

Day 9/turn 8 for Caltaran, Ximo, Marcel:
Caltaran was still detecting for evil around him ((he actually has a lot of duration left)), but sensed none. He tried detecting an illusion too, or at least disbelieving in it. He tried his best to convince himself, but when he touched the statue, it still seemed like a real statue.
The Prefect answered Marcel, still in a low voice ((there are still other people all around, but most of them are wailing about their stoned friends or their missing family or their own injuries and not paying any attention to this conversation)). "It is...said some wizards have learned how to wield power even the gods do not wish us to have. If anyone in Verbobonc has such power...they surely belong to the Silver Consortium."
Meanwhile, Ximo saw two of the wizards cast spells and disappear as he approached them. The third let Ximo come over and talk to him. He listened attentively as Ximo shared his skepticism.
"You touched it with your bare hand and disbelieved it, yet they remained stone to you. That would be a very powerful illusion. We considered that as well, of course. Teobaldus had a spell of magic detection up at the time of the attack and sensed no illusion magic, only powerful abjuration magic. Still...even that is not absolutely certain proof, for there are ways of fooling even divination spells."
Post by Ronny Serio on Jun 29, 2015 21:44:48 GMT -6
Marcel matched the Prefect's quiet tone. "Joaquim will investigate the Consortium's capabilities, but should they come up short, I implore you, send to the Free City for help. Names like Tenser and Mordenkainen must be known here. If one tenth of the rumors about what goes on in that ziggurat are true, this task will not be beyond their grasp. The difficult part would be in convincing them to come..."
"It would be powerful, but the thing did disappear once it was out of general view. As did those soldiers I ensnared. What other explanation can you offer?" Ximo asked. "Do conjured creatures disappear after their duration is exhausted?"
Ximo planned to accompany this wizard back to the Consortium and find out what he could about that group's opinions on today's terror.

Caltaran comes over to the Prefect and says, " I agree with Marcel's suggestion and I would second this suggestion. Unless you need me for something I am going to continue to survey the battlefield, see if anyone is wounded and also find out if there are any enemy prisoners. Questioning them can lead us to who is responsible. Plus as I said earlier once my training is complete I am going to Dieg manor ( see the reasons above)

Day 9/turn 8a for Caltaran, Ximo, Marcel:
There was a plethora of clerics around the scene, so no one was injured any longer. Those who had died from the dragon's acid breath were being rinsed off with buckets of water fetched by lay servants and then covered with blankets -- which still turned black in large spots from the acid left on the corpses.
There were no enemy combatants left alive at the south gate, but Caltaran and Marcel did notice that some of the fallen fighters were being carried into the temple, and they did not appear to be soldiers of the Viscount or Church.
"Even here the names Tenser and Mordenkainen are well-known to me," the Prefect said to Marcel. "We will do what we can. And Caltaran -- have you learned any lessons from what happened today that can be applied to your training?"
Meanwhile, when the remaining magician learned that Ximo wished to go back to the Consortium with him, the man shrugged and walked to the south gate instead of magically disappearing. There, they both were told to get into a long line. "Everyone is having magic divination spells cast on them before they leave, to make sure no allies to that monster remain here in the Bailey!" a soldier shouted, not to Ximo specifically, but a concerned mother in front of him.
Satisfied that the Prefect would do all he could, Marcel left the group of statues and followed those bringing the bodies into the temple. If any cultists were alive to face interrogation, he wanted to be there for it.
"Did any of your magic affect the dracolisk?" Ximo asked in a starting bid to learn what the other man knew about the attack and the Cult more generally. Ximo noted that his feet were beginning to hurt and that he was getting hungry - epic battles against evil were tiring and could stimulate your appetite. He did his best to ignore the hunger pangs and hoped the other wizard would not notice the grumbles from his stomach.
Answering the Prefect he says " yes actually. In the scriptures if dellebs teachings some knowledge is hidden and unknown until brought out into the open. A creature thought dead has returned. Some one or something is controlling it. Diego manor has a dungeon where it laired and in fact it may still be there to this day. As far as heironeous teachings remaining calm in battle. Assessing the situation by thinking before reacting. Also that assisting the innocents and helpless by protecting them first before fighting the adversary. This also ties in Raos teachings of not going out seeking vengeance or justice before getting all of the information and details."

Day 9/turn 8b for Caltaran, Ximo, Marcel:
The Prefect seemed very pleased with Caltaran's interpretation of the day. "I am glad that some Good will have come from all this otherwise senseless evil. Perhaps you had best go inside and meditate on this further."
Meanwhile, Ximo moved slowly through the line to leave. "No spell harmed the Dracolisk. Not magic missiles, lightning bolts, or fireballs. None of it seemed to be able to touch the monster."
When Ximo's turn came, the sentries and clergymen at the gate seemed to take little interest in him and his magical companion and allowed them through.
Also meanwhile, Marcel had enough contacts in the temple already to secure himself a warm welcome. "It could not hurt to have you on hand," Bortzi Curutchet, a late arrival to the scene, said. "I understand that the high priests wish to speak with the dead, in order to question the attackers who did not survive at the south gate."
The supernatural interrogations were happening in the chapter house, behind a locked door. Marcel found himself standing in the cloisters with an assortment of men and women who must have been the highest-ranking priests of the church under the high priests.
((Encounter reactions for Caltaran: 95, Ximo: 48, Marcel: 76+15)) ((Ximo will next be encountered in the Business Quarter))
Simon continued their conversation, "Isthere a spell which could create some sort of shield against magical harm? The beast had no defense against mundane attacks. Someone knew the Consortium would be on hand and sought to negate us. I am Ximo the Humble, by the way, I do not believe we have had the pleasure, good wizard."
Post by Ronny Serio on Jul 2, 2015 21:27:52 GMT -6
Marcel was brimming with curiosity over what was going on behind that door. He'd witnessed a few minor miracles in his time, but nothing on the level of speaking with the dead. Still, if he was going to be made to wait, at least he was in lofty company. The priests and priestesses around him shifted subtly with impatience as they conversed quietly with one another. They looked as eager to hear the results of the interrogation as he was.
Not wanting to waste this opportunity, Marcel made his way among them, speaking amiably with those he knew, introducing himself to some he did not. He asked a few questions, mostly regarding the dragon, and made the occasional reference to his Investigator's Guild.

Day 9/turn 9 for Caltaran, Ximo, Joaquim, Marcel:
Caltaran hurried back to meditating/praying in the Chapel of Heironeous. He heard people talking outside the chapel as they passed by, but encountered no one and overheard nothing.
Ximo had made a positive enough impression to get a name and a handshake out of his traveling companion as they left the Bailey. "I am called Tulius," the magic-user said. "It reminded me of Globe of Invulnerability, a spell I have only heard of before..." Tulius mused. "Ekaitz doubted it, though, since such a spell cannot be transferred from the caster."
They moved through the High Quarter together until Joaquim spotted them. Joaquim, the gnome, and Tulius all recognized each other moments before Ximo realized an encounter was happening.
Meanwhile, Marcel heard periodic chanting behind the closed door, while he stood as the odd man out in a circle of old clergymen, and one old clergywoman. Prefect Juliana Fabron spoke up. "That is High Priest Lefurgy's voice I hear inside. He will ask wise questions of the deceased."
"If anything can be learned from them at all," Arch-Deacon Adria Didac Ferrero said. "Surely it is clear to our combined wisdom that this attack was a diversion for something larger. Who puts crucial information in the hands of the diversionary force? But perhaps we are not thinking from the correct perspective. Perhaps some strategic insight could be gleaned from them, something a fighting man would be able to tell from their instructions. What do you think that might be, swordsman?" Ferrero asked Marcel directly.
"Joaquim! Am I glad to see you escaped..." Ximo hailed before he noticed the gnome with him and recognized his two-time near-foe. Ximo readied his remaining spell - charm person - in case it became necessary.
When no immediate attack began he continued, "I would like to compare notes on what you saw. Where are you headed? I was accompanying Tulius back to the Consortium but we had no pressing business. I will just come with you and we can talk."
