"My name is Coast Valspa and until recently was a skirmisher and hired shield. What you see is all I have left in this world. I tire of mercenary work and would lend my fighting skills to you and yours."
Frederick the Hobbit is here. "Alright, let's find this secret gem mine. Coast, it is good to have you on the team. I am sure you'll need that shield before long! Remember our casters don't have any armor, so join me in always protecting them from melee. We know we're going to face giant worms, and possibly worse, but let's be brave! I am excited to test my new magic ring of protection, so I'll go first in the marching order."
(OOC: Frederick has the best AC and saving throws, so it is good strategy to always keep him at the vanguard.)

"I have ideas for how to protect myself with magic, but need much more time for magical research..." Derosh Mol complained to the others. "Nevertheless, the baron has said this mission must take priority, and so it shall. Let us move hence!"
Willoughby, young cleric of the Holy Four, chimes in with "Yet another grand adventure! Let us be away to find these mines! And woe to any foul creatures that have defiled it! Coast, I'm sure you'll find Frederick a very stout companion in arms. And our good Professor Ganon and Derosh Mole are quite crafty scholars of magic! I pray the Four protect us in our endeavors."
Will's ready to go!
((OOC: Posted late; I got up later than usual and work bumped right up! Ready now, though))

COAST: Sack, Large x2, Backpack,Torches x6, Wine/Water Skin, Iron Rations, 10’ Pole, 50’ Rope, 12 Iron Spikes (1)

Bag 1: 8 torches (price: 2gp) 6 flasks of oil (price: 12gp) 12 iron spikes (price: 1gp) 1 claw hammer (price: 1gp) 4 small steel mirrors (signaling, etc; price: 20gp) 2 grappling hooks (price: unknown)
Bags 2 & 3: 4 week's iron rations (one spare per member; price: 60gp!!)
Bag 4 currently free space for later storage
Slung on the mules (could be tied via the rope lengths, hung from belt/bandoleers, etc): 8 full waterskins (two spare per member; price: 8gp) 2 rope lengths, 50' (price: 2gp) 4 spare daggers (price: 12gp) 2 spare shields (price: 20gp) spare ammo as required by Frederick (price: TBD)
Professor Ganon Byrne in his crimson robes, having been cleaned picks up a few items. He grabs 2 flasks of oil for his lantern, two more daggers ( making them into bootstrap sheathes), a weeks worth of food and another waterskin. In his belt pouch are the new pipes and his magic dagger is at his belt. In his second belt pouch is his multi-colored sand.
Frederick says goodbye to Pebbles and rummages though the mule's saddlebags for useful supples. The hobbit replenishes any spent torches to bring his total back to 6. He also tops off his wineskin and fills his ration-bag back to a week's supply (he's been snacking at an alarming rate). He makes sure he has at least 20 quarrels for his crossbow (maybe 40 if it doesn't put him over the encumbrance limit?) so he can pick off melee-only cave creatures from a safe distance.
He also brings an empty sack, hoping to fill it with gems!

The party sets out, eager for riches and gems. The first level of the mines is now lit by regular torches, and many guards are evident. A proper wooden bridge has been built over the river, and the party proceeds along to the great stairs leading into the mushroom cavern. Some nervous guards guard the top of the stairs, and tell you to take care in whatever mission you are on. The rope ladder is dangling from the ledge on the east wall. Do you walk over to climb it, or do you decide to go somewhere different?
IGNORE THE BLUE DOT ON THIS OLD MAP - YOU ARE AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS
"When you all were in here first, did you get any notions from your exploring as to where the best way might be? That ledge over yonder with the rope ladder dangling looks promising, though," Speaks Willoughby to the group.
"Perhaps Derosh and Ganon speak with wisdom," said Willoughby. "Maybe we should continue exploring this area before we ascend further. I vote for the West passage; As we also know that the pool of water with the ledge is that direction, also. Perhaps it's best to go near where we've been before, and work systematically for benefit of the mapping."
"When in doubt, go left (west)," votes Frederick. "I agree we should explore the side tunnels before we climb, first of all so we are not attacked from the flanks, and second in case we find some tool or item that can help us."
"Maybe we should have a look at that door and see if there is anything odd about it, some wicked contraption that makes it dangerous." Says Willoughby. From the torchlight, does it appear that the area around the door has anything weird about it? Tripwires, strange markings on the walls or scorings in them, etc?
((EDIT: DRAFT OF MAP DONE. See Here. Will upload a better non-glare map soon.))

Willoughby keeps an eye out for any nasty's in the big room behind the party! He's standing a bit behind the party, in the middle of the corridor, so he can see well into the room as best he can (He's facing East, not towards the doorway).
Over his shoulder, he says, "Fellows, I'll watch the room in case something ugly this way comes!"
Frederick tugs the door open, and he sees a tool storage room. A few old hammers, picks, shovels, etc., are piled around the walls in here. Most of the tools look to be in poor condition. There is a door in the south of this 30' square room

Looking over his shoulder, back west towards the party, Willoughby muses "...Tools? Sir Frederick, do those items appear to you as being somewhat like implements dwarfs would use, or poorer examples such as those vile kobolds might craft? Perhaps this is a clue, and we near our goal!"
After this, he resumes his rearward watch for any shenanigans.
Frederick rushes to the southern door to give the "all clear" (or not) while his friends explore the tool room. He doesn't open the door (if it is shut), but if he sees or hears anything alarming, he will motion for everyone to stay back.

Once the party enters the room, Willoughby will look around at what's here. He'll check out some of the tools, and look under tables for interesting things they might miss. But! He will stick near the west/east door (instead of the south one) so he can keep checking down the (now eastern, if he's inside) passage for things sneaking up behind them.
"Mayhap I should have waited to buy my claw hammer," the young acolyte muses as he looks around. A silly chuckle follows this statement.
