Not sure if this is the appropriate subfolder for this, but here goes.
I'm starting a campaign for High School age kids, and I'm looking for suggestions for a playlist.
We're going to try to stick close to the '74 rules where possible, and see where it goes. Right now looking for atmosphere music for the sessions. I want to capture the musical feel for the time, to set the tone (Mostly during pre and post game time). So, looking for recommendations of both bands, albums and songs. Right now, this is what I've got. I'm setting an arbitrary limit of nothing post 1976 for now.
Here's where I'm starting, in no particular order
Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd David Bowie Mott the Hoople Queen Deep Purple Emerson Lake & Palmer Blue Öyster Cult
My list is tending to skew towards early metal, glam rock and progressive rock, which matches what I know, but I'm sure I'm missing something, as this is before my time as a gamer.
What records/songs/bands do you associate with the time? Preferably things that stuck with you in memory.

Ah good times. We had a campaign that was based on Sign of the Southern Cross - Black Sabbath. I also remember a fair amount of Jethro Tull in the mix, and Yes - Tales from the Topographic Oceans.. Man you kids and your iWidgets not having to get up and change the records... shakes his grumpy old man fist...hahah

Jethro Tull, "Songs from the Woods", "Minstrel in the Gallery", "Heavy Horses", and maybe "Broadsword and the Beast".

Want to get the feel right (my D&D soundtrack is early 80s, and that's not what I'm looking for.

Hope the game goes well, it sounds like a blast!

Since you like glam rock, I'd recommend T.rex, particularly the "Beard of Stars" (1970), "T. Rex" (1970) or "Electric Warrior" (1971) albums. Beard of Stars is probably my favorite - don't miss the electric guitar freakout Elemental Child - but Electric Warrior is probably their most classic.
Hawkwind - their prime early years correspond to the years of Chainmail/OD&D - "In Search of Space" (1971, particularly the track Master of the Universe), Doremi Fasol Latido (1972, tracks: Brainstorm, Time We Left This World Today), Space Ritual (1973, double live & usually considered their ultimate album), Hall of the Mountain Grill (1974, track: Psychedelic Warlords), Warrior on the Edge of Time (1975, influenced by Michael Moorcock's writing & he even recites some poetry).
Yes - The Yes Album (1971) or any of their others from the first half of the '70s.

This may sound weird, but I find ambient music the best for my campaign settings and my DM style.
And by ambient I mean the real deal, Brian Eno and those who can do what he does. Not the pan-flute music they play at day-spas.
Some really haunting ones: Ambient Music 4: On Land (really deeply haunting at points); with Harold Budd: The Pearl and Ambient 2: The Plateau of Mirror; Apollo Atmospheres and Soundtrack; Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics; with David Byrne: My Life in the Bush of Ghost (definitely some freaky stuff here); more recent but in the vein: Small Craft on a Milk Sea; etc.
And, of course, you absolutely cannot fail with Ambient 1: Music for Airports.
Eno's ambient doesn't get in the way of conversation but it sets a mood that always feels appropriate to engaging fantasy legendaria (at least for me). And although kids in the 70's probably didn't even know he existed, most of this is late 70s and early 80s pure sweetness, so it is, at least, era-appropriate!

Can and Neu! are two leading krautrock groups whose seminal records came out in the early to mid-70s - they'll convey a much different vibe than Sabbath, perhaps more closely aligned with science fantasy or the oneiric.

Lots of great fantasy-themed prog rock pre-1976! Rush -- Fly by Night, Caress of Steel Uriah Heep -- Demons & Wizards, The Magician's Birthday, Salisbury King Crimson -- In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard, etc. Rick Wakeman -- Six Wives of Henry VIII This may sound weird, but I find ambient music the best for my campaign settings and my DM style. And by ambient I mean the real deal, Brian Eno and those who can do what he does. Not the pan-flute music they play at day-spas. I'm the same way. Ambient is where it's at for "table music," at least when I'm DMing. Much less distracting than rock, classical, jazz, etc. In keeping with the "pre-1976" requirement, some Ambient/proto-Ambient stuff (* indicates records that have gotten LOTS of use at my table over the years): Tangerine Dream -- Atem*, Alpha Centauri, Zeit*, Phaedra, Rubycon Popol Vuh -- Affenstunde, In den Garten Pharaos*, Hosianna Mantra, etc. Klaus Schulze -- Irrlicht*, Cyborg, Timewind

I personally find music with lyrics distracting during game play. An instrumental like Tubular Bells will work.

Thanks for the suggestions! This is more for game night music , not during play. I don't hear well, so even orchestral pieces make it tough to play.
This is more for pre-post game social time, and these are some great suggestions.

What do the high school kids like to listen to? Most of the ones I've worked with in recent years preferred hiphop.

Since you like glam rock, I'd recommend T.rex {...} Hawkwind Great picks. Unicorn is my favorite Tyrannosaurus Rex LP, and the self-titled T. Rex is my favorite post-name change. I always thought it'd be fun to throw a bunch of Marc Bolan references into a game. Just a few days ago I started a new game using the '81 rule set, and making a play list was one of my keystones for setting the tone. They are exploring the Holmes sample dungeon, working from the base town of Specularum (mashed up with Portown). Here are the albums I had, some of which were mentioned previously: Black Sabbath (first four albums), Dio (Holy Diver), Thin Lizzy (Jailbreak), Uriah Heep (Demons and Wizards), Yes (The Yes Album, Fragile), Jethro Tull (some songs from Benefit), Led Zeppelin (first 5), Hawkwind (mostly the albums Zenopus mentioned), Rainbow (self titled, Rainbow Rising) Rainbow and Dio might be post-76, but they're definitely worth it. Plus some new stuff that fit the tone: Kadavar (self-titled), Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats (Blood Lust) I think the music helped to set the mood I was hoping for. Fun, brutal, but a little bit lighthearted/tongue-in-cheek.

[Magnum] - Kingdom of Madness - Favourite: "Kingdom of Madness" [Magnum] - II - Favourite: "Great Adventure" [Warrior] - Let Battle Commence - Favourite: "Let Battle Commence"
I know, a little too "fresh" for your pre-eighties campaign, though for Goblins and Orcs attacking there is nothing better than [Exodus] - Bonded By Blood - "Piranha"

Totally second Popol Vuh for ambient tunes.

Lots of great music recommendations here! I've been meaning to get some Popol Vuh for years, ever since seeing Aguirre, the Wrath of God. I think one could develop an entire campaign setting based on Bolan's early work, from songs like "Wielder of Words", "The Travelling Tragition", "Warlord of the Royal Crocodiles", "Pavilions of Sun", "Children of Rarn", "Planet Queen" (one song of each of the first six albums). Especially Unicorn. Sounds great.

I personally find music with lyrics distracting during game play. An instrumental like Tubular Bells will work. If you turn on a radio in another room, the lyrics themselves kind of become ambient noise after a while and blend into the song.
