I am going to offer some rpg stuff for sale. I have photos of it all in my "Pictures" folder in my laptop (which runs Windows 8.1). How do I display those photos in a post here on the boards? I know to click the little "Insert Image" icon, but then what? It seems that it assumes you'll be getting the photos from the internet, but that's not what I need to do. I want to get them from my "Pictures" folder. Thanks!

I don't think you can do that, at least not with most forum software (this one included). You'll just have to upload the photos to a free picture-hosting service like Imageshack or Photobucket, and THEN link to the uploaded file in your forum post.

You could certainly use a free Dynamic DNS service to allow everybody on the Internet to access resources on your home PC or laptop. The following article describes what Dynamic DNS is, and then compares a bunch of free service providers: Best Free Dynamic DNS Services (Updated 2014). However, I would not recommend that approach unless you were willing to setup a secure, dedicated web server, and put some kind of firewall between it and the rest of your home network! @ premmy's suggestion of using a free photo sharing service is definitely the right way to go! There is additional information on the BBCode examples page about posting images and resizing them. There's some other useful stuff there, like making BBCode tables. But your question suggests the need for a sticky post (perhaps in the Links & Resources section?) that would describe how to share multimedia content or active content on these boards, such as...

Hopefully Geoffry doesn't mind if I semi-hijack his thread but it seems pertinent...
I've been using Photobucket for years. Now that I've been forced to abandon Opera and switched to Firefox...then PaleMoon (FF alternative) and now IceDragon (Comodo's Firefox build), I've obviously had to use a third-party ad-blocker. I'm using BluHell Firewall extension for this purpose and the only site I've had an issue with so far is Photobucket. It won't load anything on that site. I'm often going to the site, then finally remember I have to turn off BluHell, then reloading. Of course, the rest is the same as ever: takes forever to load the page, then forever to load again after signing in, then forever to upload, then waiting for it to refresh, then navigating to the pic, then copying the url or html code.
There's got to be a photo hosting service that's simpler, quicker and lighter. Just as we would abandon Adobe Reader for something like PDF-XChange or Sumatra, or use IrfanView or FastStone (my personal fave) for photo editing instead of something more bloated.
I'm loathe to sign up for a gazillion services just to find out. Any suggestions from those who have experiences with Photobucket alternatives?

I have an Imageshack account. Never had a problem with it. Admittedly, I really don't use regularly, and I think they might have started pushing people towards subscription-based services. Probably worth checking out, though.

I used Imageshack for posting images in a PbP game I ran and worked well for me as well.

No stronger words as to the perils of Open Source or other free software. If you go with purchased software, such as even for a web forum, the same old general rule always warrants consideration: you get what you pay for, and likely not a lot of irritating advertisements.

Allows image resizing after upload. Very easy linking I just did this one: i.imgur.com/ojV5tqe.jpg?1To link to the image directly, just add a "?1" at the end of the imgur URL. Definitely the best photo hosting out there right now.

((Minor thread-jack)) jeff, you're new avatar makes me get the old 'airwolf' song stuck in my head when I look at it (regardless that the pic looks more like blue thunder Note that this isn't a bad thing!! )) Yeah, I think Imgur is a good site for this. Helps for these boards, I think. I'm like machfront; I don't want to have to create an account for a dozen places just to find one that works well and doesn't suck.

I got the Blue Thunder vibe too and I actually immediately heard the end theme from the film (I love Arthur Rubenstein's score and I love the sound of the Synclavier, so...). Thanks for the suggestions of imgur. No need for an account is a plus but then again I guess it would be more difficult to consolidate. Aside/Re: freeware - I've used plenty of software over the years and I've never had any experience of anything being 'lesser' with freeware. I enjoy computer-based music creation/production and 99% of what I use is freeware. In fact, most of the best free soft synths can easily go toe-to-toe against overpriced payware synths. Soft synths like Synth1, Oatmeal, OBXD, u-he's Tyrell Nexus 6, Charlatan, samplers like TX16Wx, drum synths like Drumatic 3, and many others make one shocked that they are offered for free. Even DAWs (the studio environment): trackers like Psycle and traditional sequencers like Podium Free. While not free many fully featured low-priced DAWs demonstrate the inverse to 'you get what you pay for', like energyXT, Tracktion and Podium. REAPER at only 60 bucks either outguns or draws with things like Live ($750) and Studio One ($500). Going to someplace populated by both professional and hobbyist musicians like KVRaudio.com and suggesting payware is inherently 'better' than freeware would end in you being essentially laughed out of the room.
