I'm still in the process of moving and I've been going thru the storage unit and all the boxes of crap I have there.
Most of it is OK: Mainly books with some boxes of comics. The worst is actually crap: boxes of old magazines and papers that I was "going to sort out later when I had more time". Sheesh! Like anyone ever gets more time.
But it really does pay to check every box carefully!! In a box that I though was just old crap, I moved the upper layer of papers and found:
A complete set of Interplay magazine.
A pretty-much complete set of Abyss magazine.
A set (almost entirely unused and still good) of Armory crayons for "inking" Zocchi dice.
Some old Tunnels & Trolls stuff and supplements.
My copy of The Fantasy Trip, including almost pristine copies of Advanced Wizard and Advanced Melee.
My boxed copy of Thieves' World.
My old copy of The Dungeoneer (#1 - #6)!!
Plus . . . some REAL treasures . . .
Space Quest, 2nd edition, 1979, from Tyr Gamemakers Ltd. I thought this got dumped in the "Great Game Purge" of the 1990s (which I still bitterly regret). We actually played this back in 1979 - 81 when we got tired of D&D and had a lot of fun with it. My copy is in VERY good shape and NO, I'll not be selling this gem.
Bushido, first edition, 1980, from Phoenix Games. Two digest-sized booklets (still in their ziploc baggie!!!!) in excellent shape!!! Book 1 is "The Heroes of Nippon" and Book 2 is "The Land of Nippon". Again, I thought this was long gone and I'm glad I have it.
Beasts, Men & Gods: A Fantasy Role Play System, (1980) by The Game Masters (Bill Underwood). I've never really sat down and digested this game as I intended to use it at the time for ideas and source material. I seem to remember a discussion on these boards (or perhaps not), so I'm glad that I found my copy and will take a new look at it. I doubt that there was ever a second printing or edition of this game - in any case, this is the first printing.
The New Ysgarth Rules, by Ragnarok Enterprises, 1980, by David Nalle. 80 pages of old time fun from the publishers of Abyss Quarterly (see above), but I mainly bought this to back up the following:
The Ysgarth Rule System, by Ragnarok Enterprises, 1982, by David Nalle. Six digest sized booklets still in their original ziploc baggie!!!!! They include: I - The Fantasy Character, II - Battlecraft, III - The Arcane Arts, IV - Holy Orders, V - The Fantasy World, and the unnumbered sixth book - The Last Song of Hergest (scenario). I seem to remember buying this just prior to moving down here TO the "edge of the world" part of Kansas 32 years ago and I evidently never got round to even looking at it. Assuming that I don't lose it again this move (!!!), I very much look forward to doing so now.
The Spawn of Fashan, by The Games of Fashan, 1981, (Kirby Lee Davis). This is an almost mythical game and also rumored to be the absolute worst role-playing game ever. I purchased this copy at the Denver World Science Fiction Convention, "Denvention II", in September of 1981 from the author in a booth. It is labelled "Special Denvention II Edition" and he signed it to me and it is even notarized!!! (Good Grief! Maybe if he was Gary Gygax or someting . . .) Somewhere on the net is a very good but very negative review of this "system" and I need to find that again so I can then enjoy trying to make sense of these pages . . . I doubt if I'll ever use anything I find in this book, but it will be good for both a laugh and a trip down memory lane . . .
And here are two I would part with, assuming someone makes me the proper offer (hint, hint) (PM me if so inclined):
Legions of the Petal Throne, TSR Rules (lizard logo), 8.5" x 11", 1977. Some cover wear, but binding tight with no writing inside. Not a pristine copy, not a great copy, but a fair copy structurally intact. 44 pages. Subtitled "Fantasy Miniatures Wargame Rules for the World of Tekumel". I had a friend that was simply HUGE for anything Tekumel related, so I picked this up back in the day. Never used it.
Deeds of the Ever-Glorious: Histories of the Tsolyani Legions, by M. A. R. Barker, published by Adventure Games, First printing - December 1981. A 6" x 9" booklet giving, as with all things related to Prof. Barker, extreme detail. Gives the histories of 85 legions plus some other notes. This book is in absolute perfect condition! I don't think I even took it out of its baggie until today! I don't know what this thing might be worth (so I might get taken), but if you know a EotPT fanatic that doesn't have this, it would make a cool gift (again, hint, hint). Again, I just never could get into Tekumel very much for the same reason I can't get into Russian novels: If the language is just TOO strange, it becomes gibberish to me and thus actually repellent. (I would like to read a version of several Russian novels such as War and Peace, but where the names have been changed to Bill Johnson, Fred Smith, etc.) I actually LIKE Tolkien's work, but then I can actually pronounce his languages. Barker's stuff is just too far out for me.
Anyway, I just had to post this to brag a bit and to see if anyone had comments or observations to share about any of these.
I would especially like to hear comments from anyone with experience with David Nalle's Ysgarth Rule System.
Gonyaulax (still in KS, soon to be NE. Yes, that IS an improvement!)
