Welcome - all editions have something to offer; hopefully we can all behave here and discuss what OD&D offers!
For sure! I was never a detractor of previous iterations of the game, always ready to defend the virtues of THAC0 or level titles, and especially now that the edition wars have moved on to a new front I feel no reluctance to say "I like that, and also this, and some ideas from over here too."

Hello all,
I'm Kevin, and have been playing OD&D/AD&D both as a participant and DM since 1982. Began with the Holmes set, and moved to AD&D in college in the mid-80's. Had a great long-term campaign using an amalgam of 1st/2nd ed thru the mid-90's and now I'm reduced to playing online only as a result of life/work/kids.
So sites like this are my crack.

Hi! I'm Brian, I got pointed here by James' Grognardiablog. I started with Moldvay/Cook and actually haven't ever played oD&D. Still, I like the vibe of the discussion here. That, and you guys make me feel young. ;D - Brian

Hello All,
Just signed up obviously. I'm 36 years of age, grew of in North Indiana. I cut my game teeth initially on the Moldvay/Cook boxed sets I think, but it seems like I had the AD&D books shortly thereafter. I had a lot of fun, loved it, sodas and late nights like so many other gamers. My earliest exposure to D & D was hanging out at like age 7 or 8 in my cousins basement listening to him and his friends play. It was magical stuff in my mind. I think that I saw the blackmoor and greyhawk supplements at a game shop and flipped through them, but it looked like the hardback books had cleaned up a messy goo to me at the time, so I had no interest at that point in OD&D. Played stuff like Traveller, Warhammer Fantasy, Star Frontiers, Champions etc. I used to own a lot more games than I ever played, chivalry and sorcery, some runequest stuff, interestingly no Cthulu stuff. No interest in miniature wargames, seemed like too much work to me, though I did have several board games, WWII simulations, Gulf Strike etc. I have a lot of fond memories of those days, going into the hobby shops and all that. Went with the 2nd edition of AD&D for a couple of years. I moved about 5 hours from where I grew up the day after high school ended and just lost interest in playing really. That and when I'd occasionally go to one of the local stores, the stuff just did not connect anymore for me. Third Ed. came out and I checked it out, after 3.5 I decided to buy the books, but when I sat down to stat out an adventure I sold them, too much work. Via the internet, I found out about C & C and bought their stuff, which I actually like and that got me back into playing occasionally. However, the internet gave me peeks into OD&D and my interest grew. I bought all the supplements, chainmail and the original three books once they came out on PDF. It was like mescaline for me, pure enchantment. It's so wide open I felt as though I'd missed out. So I found this board, and I love the discussion here, thanks guys. I've played a couple games with one friend of OD&D and he's already battling for control with a chaotic sword he picked up. I did put in an order for the new 4th edition books to check them out, just for the sake of being willing to keep an open mind. However I'd say that the framework of OD&D is exactly what sparks my imagination. I think up more stuff, strange and otherwise just thinking up an adventure in a given moment.

Hey all! I'm guessing I'm a bit of an oddity here ( I was a kid who started in 93' with Basic and then 2nd edition, moved on to 3.5, and then ran screaming back...) but I've had no experience with OD&D. I'm fascinated by it, and I've been reading the rules for some time, but I've never played it. I'd like to someday, but only time will tell. Regardless, I hope I can contribute something to the discussion here.

No worries, Richter, welcome! Poster Melan proves that you can be from the younger generation and still be a 'top gun' where the older game is concerned.

Whoa, lots of cool new people on here. This site is growing fast. Welcome to all of you! Hack, that open-ended creativity is why I stay with the older versions of the game as well.

Thanks for the welcome Calithena! I appreciate the sentiment. Now I'm going to go lurk around your and Makofan's game board and see if any positions free up...

Yeah Calithena, original D & D, traveller and the other games from that era are blank pages almost, which I really really like.

I started playing AD&D in 1980 when I was 13 but have never played OD&D or even BD&D. Of course I (and all my friends) wanted to play the newest version, since it had more rules and classes (so it had to be better). However, a quarter century later I find that lots of rules and options doesn't fascinate me the way it did when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, my busy life generally prevents me from playing, but I still find myself drawn to the original three booklets in their purest form. Thigru

Hi everyone! I'm a hungarian gamer. My story: I was born in 1976, started with ad&d second edition in 1991, in a roleplaying club "fantasy club" as they called it. I got my nickname there, and I like it so much, that I use it in non roleplaying forums too. What we played, was actually a cross between the 1e and the 2e, because the second edition just recently came out, and most of the DM-s and players played the game as they learned from each other, and most of them never read the rulebooks. At the time we had to travel to a negighboring country to buy rpg books... Most of the guys don't even had the opportunity to read them... We had photocopied books for the tables, and photocopied monster manuals and monster compendiums. As the years passed, I learned to read in english (computer games, roleplaying, and love of fantasy forced me to) and I bought the DMG and PHB, and other books, I slowly learned the rules of the game. I experimented two or three dozen other games, the ones I most liked were Vampire the Masquarade and Cyberpunk 2020. But ad&d always remained my favorite. About eight years later, when the third edition came out, I was pretty much burned out. I started pursuing material goals, and had no more time and energy for gaming. One of my last roleplaying related action was, after trying 3e for one time, that I borrowed the first edition rulebooks from a friend (I never read them before), and the Rules Cyclopedia, and I planned to compare D&D, AD&D and AD&D2ed, and make my perfect system... I didn't know about OD&D and roleplaying history back then. I was always planning my coming back, mainly thinking about my fantasy ad&d campaign and my vampire campaign, and doing nothing, sometimes writing down little bits through the years. Last year I played again Cyberpunk 2020, a one shot game, and a few months ago a fanatsy game (I think in this boards only Melan would know it, it's a hungarian fantasy rpg named MAGUS), not my favourite, but my new gamer friends like it better than ad&d. Then, when the news of Gygax's passing reached me, I slowly started to remember. I took out the 1st ed books, and RC, which were still at me, started to read them, and started to browse the net for information. I read few interviews, and then I found some very good message boards about old school d&d. Knights and Knaves mainly, and I read through the Gary's Q&A threads of Dragonsfoot. Finally I came here, and read myself through the philosophy forum. It convinced me, that this type of discussion is what interests me. So I registered. The Blackmoor section was also a big plus for me. Along the way I got the od&d pdfs, and now I'm comparing the rules with ad&d, RC, 2ed, reading the forums, and trying to figure out how I want to run my game. I realize, that it's more philosophy than actual rule sets. So I decided, that I try od&d. I'm designing my fantasy world campaign, and so far this is the game which I feel most suitable for my goals. I feel that the "perfect system" which I was looking for some eight years ago, will be the slightly house ruled od&d, with some new classes, which are neccesary for my campaign world. Hopefully I can convince a few gamers to try it. Maybe even non gamers! After all, they don't have to learn any rules, it would take ten minutes to make their characters, and we are in. With ad&d I wouldn't ever try something like this... My girlfriend is a gamer too, was a gamer before we met. She is determined that our children should learn roleplaying. It's as important, as school, and other neccessary thing a child should learn, she says. I won't complain about this. An interesting thing, I learned in these forums, that od&d is woman and child friendly. So naturally I'm excited...

Hi I am Mike D. (go figure) and I have been gaming since 1982 (when I was 12). Started with Moldvay Basic D&D and then onto AD&D. Just recently acquired OD&D and I love it. Also just got my copy of Fight On! and have to say "great work" to all involved. Very nice. I live in Douglasville, Ga. (about 20 miles west of downtown ATL). West-side yo! --Mike D.

Hey all. My name is Bill and been gaming since the early 90s. Started in High School on 2nd edition and through the efferts of various "clone" game creators, have gotten sucked into earlier edtion gaming.
I lurk most old school sites and rarely post, but I am an avid idea thief. You folks are just too creative NOT to pilfer from. And since I just found this board and been trying to get up to speed by reading the various posts, my gf thanks you. Since I'm here and not bugging her. It's win/win.
Good Gaming to all.

Hope not.
We've worked really hard to discourage trolling and general sniping at each other. We don't even have an "edition wars" section because I want us to discuss OD&D, not fight about why it's better or worse than other games.
Feel free to look around the threads to see what kinds of wonderful discussion has happened since I created this place last June.
Also, check out the "Fight On!" section of the boards, where we discuss a fanzine which many of us contributed to and has actually hit print through Lulu.com!
Hope you have a great time here! I'm proud of this place and the group of gamers we've assembled.

Finarvyn: You should be proud of this place. While I haven't read everything, what I have read shows an honest to goodness community without a bunch of bullcrap bickering back and forth. I guess the internet has made me jaded because I'm still getting over this. ;D Hell everyone should be proud. This place is just too dang inviting. But you won't catch me slipping, the friendlier the place, the more skeletons in the closet. That's right, I'm on to alll of you. Teasing teasing. For real, great board. It kicks mucho hiney.

Why am I here? It's all Proctor and Gamble's fault, I suppose. Let me explain:
A while back, they came out with the five bladed cartridge razor. FIVE. BLADES. At that point my over marketed, over brainwashed to consume soul finally rebelled. I refused to have anything to do with such an abomination.
I sought an earlier, simpler form of hair removal. I considered straight razors, but I could hear the Blessed Saint Murphy whispering in my ear, "Dude. I don't want to kill you but I will".
So I went with a somewhat less old fashioned double edged safety razor. From there I discovered shaving mug soap, and I've never looked back.
My recently acquired fondness for OD&D follows the same pattern. Many years ago, after a brief fling with Tunnels & Trolls, I bought into 1st edition AD&D, and followed it well into 2nd edition. I bought as much stuff as I could afford, and envied those who had more. Life intruded, and I eventually drifted away from gaming.
Lately, I've much more time on my hands, and I'm returning to my old hobby. But I look at this thing called 3rd Edition, and the rumors of the 4th, and my soul once again rebels. So, I've gone back to the source. I downloaded Drivethru's OD&D bundle, and I'm studying them diligently. I've got some friends who might be interested in some old fashioned dungeon crawling, and we'll see what happens from there.
Think of it as reenactment: just as some people put on Civil War uniforms and shoot muskets at each other, I game using an ancient rule set. We are both studying history as well as having fun.
One final note: Anything I post should be considered to begin with the phrase "In my opinion...", and end with "But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong". I am not and do not pretend to be in charge of anything but my own game.

So I went with a somewhat less old fashioned double edged safety razor. From there I discovered shaving mug soap, and I've never looked back. I also shave with a brush/mug/soap (although I confess to using one of those new-fangled three-blade razors). I find it amazing how long a disc of mug soap lasts. Anyway, welcome to the boards!

Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself.
I played (or rather, DMed) AD&D from 1984 to 1991, having been introduced to the game by my older brother, who was at university when I was still at primary school. I was never very keen on 2nd edition, but the publication of a new set of rules did give me an "Aha!" moment, and lead me to start tinkering with the rules in an effort to create the "perfect" version of the game, something I've always enjoyed doing! I also GMed a lot of Call of Cthulhu and Paranoia.
From 1991 onwards, I stopped playing RPGs, except for the very occasional game, but I stayed interested in the hobby. Recently, a combination of the internet, all the post-d20 D&D variants (3e, Hackmaster, True20, C&C, BFRPG etc), the easy availibility of pdfs, and the "old-school renaissance" have got me interested in the game again.
I've been enjoying reading the "old-school" forums and blogs and the pdfs I've bought, and I would like to start DMing again. I have two ideas for campaigns, either a series of classic modules set in Greyhawk and using "AD&D lite" rules, or a slightly weird campaign set in Glantri (from the Known World setting for BECMI D&D), using homebrew rules. The problem is going to be finding the time and the players.
I probably shan't post very often, since I don't own the OD&D rules (yet!), I just like the "OD&D attitude"! I assume "non-OD&D" posts are forbidden here, right?
