The hit-dice system in Carcosa (this is my first time playing) seems clever: if I understand it correctly, a character can sustain hits in a skirmish equal to his highest single die-roll before losing a single die. Thus, a 1HD character emerges from each fight either in top form, or dead.

This strikes me as an elegant way to address the lack of magical healing: as long as you don't lose a full die in one fight, you have the full die for the next fight. So, e.g. The Penultimate Ecstasy will roll a full hit die of a random type for the next fight, despite losing one out of his four pips in this one.

Have I understood it correctly?

Yup. That is exactly correct and I am only rolling hit points when a character is first damaged by an attack.

Mushgnome gets my endorsement for best PC entrance. Perfect transition from pulp melodrama to absurd deflation.

Not sure if we need a map of every room, but in situations with complicated battles, they do help.

I'll wait till tomorrow for responses from the rest of the characters, but I would like to keep the game moving. Tomorrow, combat progresses to round 2.
