From my perspective, the only problems were 1. all the players started out individually, making it hard get any group efforts going. 2. the "rumors" we were given (at least that I was aware of) didn't have any sense of urgency for our characters, aside from being opportunities for adventure and loot.
The second might've been fine as a starting-off point if we were mostly ready to go, but when combined with the first it just bogged everything down. I think even in best-case scenarios it's a big challenge to keep momentum going in an online campaign, as the format is very slow by nature. So having players muddle through preliminary dialogues and finding something to do before we've gotten engaged with the story is gonna be nigh impossible. I'd be glad to give it another shot sometime though.
