Please help build the 0e OGL monster base
« Thread Started on Jan 23, 2009, 3:56pm »

I'm starting a drive to build up a database of OGL monsters in 0e format/style but for use in any retro-clone game. At the moment, I've got pretty much all the monsters from the original books and supplements, plus a large number from 1e that I've translated into the 0e power curve (ie, slightly weaker than 1e) and the 0e style of presentation (a bit less detail on the game mechanisms of the monsters). We have also, with lots of help from Skathros, added several new monsters via the S&W forums.

What I'm asking is that anyone with a new monster who'd like to see it added to this database of OGL monsters please either respond on this thread or at the S&W forum for this project: http://swordsandwizardry.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=18

If you'd like commentary from other readers on a monster, the S&W forum itself is probably better set up for multiple threads than here.

Anyway, if you have a new monster, please post it at the S&W forum or in this thread - I'll propose edits to people in order to keep the "style" of the descriptions roughly comparable. I'll also add whichever "other" AC is needed - S&W shows both the ascending and the descending number.

It doesn't matter what system your monster is officially written for - I'll help with any conversion needed to 0e. The end result should be good for all systems, for idea mining at the very least, and also the S&W stats are pretty much usable anywhere, so most of this can be put to direct use without any conversion. Again: it doesn't matter if it's for BFRPG, LL, C&C, 1e, or WHATEVER - please consider adding to the available old-school OGL content! I will offer any edits needed to fit it into the overall format.

(And even if you're not interested in contributing anything, still go look at the new monsters on the project board, as a reward for reading this post, which is now longer than I envisioned...)

Here you go. This is an edited version of a monster I sent on to BFRPG.

Gump
Armor Class: 5[14]
Hit Dice: 4
Attacks: 1 weapon(1d6+2)
Special: Gaze Attack
Move: 9

Gumps are large and blubbery humanoids with an overly broad jagged toothed grin an a pair of small deepset eyes in an otherwise featureless face. Gumps are motivated by hunger and the deep down joy they feel when murdering a helpless foe. Should one meet the gaze of a Gump they must save vs paralysis at +2 or be held in place for 2-5 rounds (fighting without looking incurs a -4 penalty to-hit). It is safe to view a gumps's reflection in a mirror or other
reflective surface. The Gump is able to squint in an odd manner which keeps it from holding an ally.

here is another I first whipped up at 12 or 13 years of age (a long time ago) and submitted to BFRPG.

Leper Zombie
Armor Class: 6[13]
Hit Dice: 1
Attack: claw or bite (1d6)
Special: disease
Move: 9

Leper zombies are clearly undead afflicted with a horrific disease resembling a form of leprosy, more agile then other types of zombies, and far more deadly: any who battle them must save vs disease at the end of the fight or contract Zombie Leprosy (die in 3 days and return as a Leper Zombie). They may be Turned by Clerics as Ghouls and are immune to sleep and charm spells. Anyone slain by a Leper Zombie reanimates as one in 1d6 rounds.

Carrying equipment, arms and armor of one slain by a leper zombie or used to destroy a leper zombie carries a risk to the bearer, they must save vs disease at +4 each day or contract Zombie Leprosy. Holywater, remove curse and other methods of cleansing may render the gear safe again.

Excellent monsters! I've posted them in the Compendium's format on the S&W boards in the Monster Project area:
