I hope it's worth the wait. The problem with a big buildup is large expectations. I'm hoping that S&W:WB does what everyone is looking to have a rules set do. (crosses fingers)

I'm looking for S&W:WB to...

Present the rules in a sane fashion.
Provide an OGL reference for publishers.

If it does that then I'll be happy.

My issue with White Box, is that, it doesn't mean anything to anyone that doesn't already know what it means. You have to already be in-the-know (through age or sites like this one) for White Box to be relevant. So, if the White Box edition is only for old men, it's fine, but I think it might be meaningless if the target audience is The Next Generation.

Of course, it could have meaning if it were sold in a white box, or the cover were made to appear as a white box.

I would say definately make the cover of the book white.

It would look nifty as a paperback, although white hardbacks are odd.

Back in the day, the Holmes rulebook was known as "the blue book." Swords & Wizardry "White Book" seems fitting, in a way.

My expectation is that the vast majority of people trying it out will be 3e players interested in playing a "one-off" of the original. They'll be directed to it from ENworld. They won't care about the name. If it takes off from there, the name won't matter.

A white border around the art, and a white spine for the book might be a good idea, though.

Indeed, but I actually like the idea of making WB stand for White Book rather than White Box, since it won't really be released in a box.

Another update -- there were a few snags that popped up; a couple things that I thought were neat varied from the LBB a bit too much and after some discussion I'm in the edit phase again. Nothing really huge, but enough to slow me down a little. I just thought I would post to give people a heads-up on this, and to let you know that it's coming together (just a little slower than I had hoped).

I'm really looking forward to this. Is the editing still coming along?

Oh, our steering committee spotted some places where I was sloppy and I'm going through another round of edits that I hadn't expected to have to do. And unfortunately, I'm a teacher and school just started again so I've been swamped. Things will smooth over at work shortly and I'll get the bugs fixed and then we're on track again. Sorry about being such a slacker. :-(

Perfectly understandable, don't worry about it. It's just nice to hear an update, even if it's to say it's not ready yet. :)

Well, the key is that there are certain expectations and we want to meet those if at all possible. Hurrying the project and turning out an inferior rules set would just be frustrating for all involved....

Wow. A steering committee. I'm beginning to think that S&W:WB will be so cool and complete, BHP will just release adventures instead of basing a rpg on it. Seriously.

I really can't wait to see it. Is there a committee member I could bribe? :)

Just asking, but will this be compatible enough with white box that players could use it to create characters (and reference spells) to run with "real" OD&D characters with no glitches/inconsistencies?

That's precisely the idea -- and I think Fin is very close to doing it.
