Has anyone ever seen or created an alchemist class for OD&D? I realize there is one for other editions, but I am interested in the possibility of a OD&D variant.

I think that would be pretty much entailed within the Magic-User class.

There is a D&D Alchemist in issue #2 of The Dragon on page 28. Many of the alternate classes in the early days of the magazine were intended for use as NPCs but this one seems to have been intended as player-character class.

Interestingly, the MUs of Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign seemed very "alchemist-like" in their conception, since they used "spell formulae" that required rare and exotic ingredients to activate.

NPCs only in my games. Alchemy is open to magicians who wish to pursue such endeavors, and I do not discourage it, but it implies a break from adventuring for several months, and perhaps more if researching new forms of alchemy.

Except that I am looking to be done with magic-users, and in their stead drop in alchemists. So I am looking for something different.
This is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you!
This is precisely the idea that I am going for. I really like the idea of the caster having to search out and acquire their reagents and such in order to "cast" their spells brew potions etc.
Thanks all!

There have been actually four different articles about the alchemist as a PC or NPC class that have appeared in The Dragon. Alchemist NPC class - "New D&D Character Class: The Alchemist, A" by Jon Pickens, The Dragon #2(pp. 28) (OD&D)
- "NPCs For Hire: ...And One Who Seeks the Perfect Mix" by Roger & Georgia Moore, The Dragon #45(pp. 11) (D&D1)
- "Recipe For the Alchemist, A" by Len Lakofka, The Dragon #49(pp. 56) (D&D1)
- "Better Living Through Alchemy" by Tom Armstrong, The Dragon #130(pp. 34) (D&D1)
From The DragonDex.

From The DragonDex. If I may ... the article I cited, and the first one on your bullet list, is for a PC and not an NPC (though obviously is could be used as either). Classes in the The Dragon intended solely for use as NPCs (ex: Anti-Paladin, Death Master) often had a far different "feel" to them, as opposed to those intended for use as PCs (ex: Illusionist, Ranger, and this version of the Alchemist). Of course, that is just one person's POV and should be treated as such!

I was going to point out this very article. At that point in Dragon everything was OD&D, so there isn't any conversion to make or anything like that. It should just drop into your campaign as-is. Also, I agree that this has always seemed like a PC-ready class, but I would be more inclined to use it in a more "realistic" world where magic use is less common. Rather than having all of the fancy magic for MUs and Clerics, using the Alchemist (and maybe the Healer) instead seems like a nice plan.

I wrote up some rules (published in Knockspell #2) for alchemy and alchemist PCs based on Dave Arneson's magic guidelines in First Fantasy Campaign.

I'll check it out when I get home from work. I know that Dave's magic system in FFC is pretty sketchy, so it'll be nice to see what you did to enhance it.

Of the three that were "NPC" classes, only the Roger Moore one appeared with that "different feel" you are suggesting. Either of the later two could have been played as PCs fairly easily.

There was an alchemist character class in White Dwarf 20.
I am sure that there was also a D&D adventure complete with some sort of alchemy system in a later issue of White Dwarf, but I can't discover it through Googling. The issue number was probably between 50 and 80.

Alchemist is listed as a specialist for hire on page 22 of The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures Vol. 3 .

I rather liked The Compleat Alchemist from Bard Games, which was mostly reproduced in The Arcanum.
