OK, apologies to all. I came down sick last week, right in the middle of the key phase of a multi-million dollar project I am managing at work. Just trying to get caught up now. Unfortunately this will be a boring post.

You ride away, the closest being about 100 feet away, and some about double that distance. The crossbowmen reload. The kraken has dispatched the illusory beast, and looks around.

Do you just ride off, or take a stand and start shooting?

Yeah, stand and shoot.

If the wagon is stopped, the men aboard will have a more stable place to shoot from. (Not sure if you take that into account.)

(William, having no missiles, does not fire.)

You escape, feeling glad that you did not raft down the river. That night, you are camping in a spot suitably far enough away from the river, when you hear a noise of a person approaching the campsite. He stops a reasonable distance off and says "Hello the camp!"

Turning to look at the source of the introduction, you espy what appears to be a well-armed and armored traveler. He stands about one half and five feet tall, clad in form-fitting plate mail, leaning on a sturdy halberd. No farmer, he! Even from this distance, you can see the lean, angular features and sharp pointed ears that undoubtedly mark the appearance of an Elf.

"I am looking for a city hereabouts, by the name of Verbosh. It makes eminent sense to travel in these parts with as many companions as possible, and yet you see my present state, which is quite alone. Might I entreat you to allow me passage with your fine Company?"
