Kell heads into town, picks up lots of rations and a great keg of ale. You guys can figure out how to split the 200 gold he has to pay. You make a merry camp, then head out for the long trek back to Verbosh.

IG: Kell chats up everyone he meets in town, I know he's not great at it, but nobody else did, so he does. Does he pick up any news, or rumors, about conditions (a) in town, (b) along the road toward Verbosh, in Verbosh itself or (c) anywhere else?

sorry. been on vacation and playing major catch-up. Patronus tends to be at the opposite end of the party from William so we have a cleric at each end for undead and such and that is still fine by me. if needed i will take first watch.

Updated threads.
You head off along the path through the hills. By the afternoon, you break out of the hills and the trail runs by the river. Patronus hears a bit of a disturbance, and looks to his right. Not 20 feet away, arising out of the water, is a huge beaked face with tentacles about to lash out at the rear of the party.

Hearing the disturbance, Kell hurries his horse ahead to get some distance between the cart and the monster. He'll dismount tie his horse to a tree and then return to help with combat.

Nothing has really changed in the town since the last time you were there

Sean and Jorman, in the rear of the party, will fire their crossbows at the creature if possible.
OOC: I don't know if this is possible. I've been in some games where the DM allows people to carry loaded crossbows, and in others where I'm told 'No, you can't keep it loaded; you'll lose tension.' I don't know enough about crossbows to argue either way.
So, if they can't fire, they'll spur their horses out of the beastie's way and then load.
Meanwhile, David and Edmar on the wagon will fire if they have a clear shot. (It's big enough, they should be able to).

Flandil casts Phantasmal Forces. He summons up another creature identical to the current one, which rises out of the water behind it, flailing and thrashing its tentacles. If it gains the attention of the current creature, it will retreat to lure it away.
((Hopefully this creature is of animal intelligence, and will react to the threat long enough to distract it and give us time to retreat!))
