If XP would be wasted by giving Flandil so much, we could give him the ring and assuming it's worth about 2000 XP, he would be in spitting distance of 3rd. If we wanted to give him the opportunity of a quick bounce expedition to make 3rd, Jariel would even be willing to forgo his cash share which would put Flandil in striking distance (and then Flandil could make it up to Jariel in the future).

I like the idea of having a 3rd level MU in the group...

This might still be a good way to go, and give 3700 odd XP total to Yhency.

Ahh, the machinations of treasure division... (These are some of the games I had hoped to see when I ran OD&D, though I wasn't going to give any or much XP for magic items - adding to the scheming possibilities).

just to be even more clear - the xp from magic items may be less than you think - because you get to use the item as well as get the experience points

If so, does Flandil want to maybe buy Jariel's old plate?

Ok, I think way's treasure split may still be the way to go. Jariel will be happy with the plate plus 1 share. If the plate is worth at least 525 xp, he'll make 3rd FM, otherwise he'll be close.

If people come out close to a level, we should go in, hit the spiders and then come back out.

In any case, I think we're just down to hearing a response from Yhency.

If Yhency does does become an NPC, then Gallaine would prefer the ring. Otherwise, she is happy with the above split of the loot.

Not yet!

Yhency prefers whatever treasure distribution maximizes the xp he receives. The potion works pretty well in that regard.
