I really liked what I've seen so far (still reading through the books).

The only thing I wished it was different was the Map PDF was a single page map, even if it was a huge one (as I said to Jeff on the Facebook fangage).

Also reading the pdf. The (e)books are beautiful and I'm really liking the mechanics. Pricing the PDFs at 10.00 was a great move. I'm seriously considering buying AS&SH in dead-tree version (I have enough Old School/retro-clones/etc for a lifetime, but the production valeu and contect of ASH&H are a lot more than I expected).

presently there are no plans to have a text-only version of AS&SH

I imagine some people will be able to read the text and criticise it without being overwhelmed by the art.

Whenever someone makes a change to the round length, in this case 60 sec to 10 sec, I like to ask them if they don't think that missile weapons are made too powerful against moving opponents.

In ad&d a bowman firing against an unencumbered opponent charging from 200yds will have one clean round to fire in before his opponent reaches him the following round.

In as&sh the same bowman will have *seven* clean rounds to fire in before his opponent reaches him in the eighth round. [Charge at: 80ft=27yds]

I think movement is a crucial aspect in the game and I think Gygax had it right.

Hi kent,

I prefer the Holmes round to the 1e round, and as far as the bowman goes, I have a few thoughts:

* Firstly, I will not argue realism over game play because, well, we are talking about fantasy gaming and not real life, but it is worth pointing out that a bowman of moderate skill should be able to shoot about 10 arrows per minute, and a professional would be able to to shoot more.

* The next thing is, if you are talking about an open field without any obstructions that would further penalize the shooter (beyond range penalties), then I feel the shooter should indeed enjoy that advantage.

* Next, I would point out that the target, if armoured, will enjoy Damafge Reduction 1 if wearing medium weight armour, and Damage Reduction 2 if wearing heavy armour.

* I would point out that large shields provide a +2 AC bonus versus missiles instead of the standard +1 provided by small shields.

* Lastly, there is the Advanced Combat Action called dodge, which allows a combatant to zig-zag his movement and thus gain +2 to AC, though movement is halved.

@diogo + @tzim -- Thank you, fellows! I'm thrilled to hear the game is interesting to you, and worth your time to read and possibly try out at some point. Thanks!

I have read the player's manual now over the last three days and I really like what I have read.

I do have one question though, is there another version of the character sheet out there floating around? The one provided is making my older eyes work harder than normal...just asking not a gripe at all!

Kudos, guys!!

I've been reading through the Gazatter in detail and have a question.
Where does Hyperborea lay in the order of planets? I'm picturing it as the third 'planet' from the sun, but I would like some confirmation.
Also, I do have to agree with Ronin84.
Would it be possible to alter the pdf to four pages with a single sheet per page?

Thank you!

The character sheet is designed to be printed on legal sized paper (8.5 x 14 in.) in landscape mode. I do intend to make a letter sized version and place it on our web site as a free download, because not everybody can or even wants to use legal paper.

I imagine it as the second from the sun, unless Old Earth is still out there somewhere . . .

Ganymede is closest.

That would be great, I have access to legal sized paper but that makes for awkward storage...I look forward to the letter sized.

OK, sounds great.

Is "Ronin84" a Frank Miller's Ronin reference?

Now that is good, you are indeed the first to understand where it originated!!

I love that series. Read it when it came out, and I still have my originals. I met Frank Miller once, and he signed a few things for me.

I was in the same boat, traded mine away a few years ago for some older dnd stuff.

My friends started calling me Ronin after seeing me with a copy almost everywhere I during that year of 84....so it stuck for a very long time. ;)

Thanks for clearing that up.
Also, great news about the character sheets.
My eyesight is not what it used to be and those will help immensely.
