Dieter steps forward, sword drawn.
"Really wish I hadn't given Olaf that shield," he mutters, with his typical German humor.
If the thing keeps moseying like it is, he'll spring forward and attack it once it's close enough. Otherwise, he'll receive its attack and then counterattack. (I.e., depends on initiative.)

Josiane maintains her sentry position for now, her gaze flicking anxiously between the walls, ceiling and tunnel mouths above to the unfolding peril below.
Should her friends appear to have the measure of the creature she will hold her position, guarding the escape route.
Should they appear to be in trouble, she will move with all haste to assist them. But for the moment, all she can offer them is a whispered prayer...

Dorgan has no idea what's going on below, and Gustave's taunts confuse him even further, but still he feels like he should be below with his comrades.
He'll pause only to see what Ulric decides. Should the mage attempt to head back up, he'll try to hasten Ulric's ascent by pulling on the rope. If the two already on the rope head down, he's next to descend.
OOC: Can Ulric see what is coming? Can he cast a spell like Anthracite Sufferance at the creature during the opening round before making to the floor?
Just before he drops from the rope to the floor, Ulric looks over his shoulder to see the giant clatter toward his fellows, but there is no possibility of incanting a spell while dangling from both hands upon a rope [spell casting requires that both hands be free].

Combat ensues.
On the ledge above, Josiane mutters a prayer and Dorgan watches Ulric safely reach the bottom of the rope. Those in the basement bellow whisk out their arms and being to move like trouble is afoot! When Guntrum is about halfway down he casts himself over the edge and begins his own abseil...
Meanwhile, in the basement proper:
Gustave and Dieter move to meet the great man of earth head on, while Highbough holds the second rank in case it breaks through, and Desmond/Mondes moves to flank.
None have any advantage of reach, so initiative is rolled [1d6; Gustave=3, Dieter=4(+1), Desmond=1(+1), Man of Earth=5,4].
"Really wish I hadn't given Olaf that shield," mutters Dieter with his typical German humor, as he lurches at the huge thing driving his sword at its belly simultaneously with it delivering a huge blow of its fist [1d20; Dieter=15, Man of Earth=15] and both hit! Dieter scores [2dd=6,4] a serious stab that gouges into the semi-soft material like a potter's knife carving clay for 9 hit points, but at the same time takes a [10dd=3, 6, 1, 3, 3, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2] crushing blow for 12 hit points that sends him reeling! Oh, for a shield...
But a breath later it strikes again, backhanding Gustave [1d20=17!] like a lurching barge for a punishing [10dd=2, 4, 1, 5, 4, 2, 6, 3, 6, 5] 12 hit points! [Gustave may sacrifice his shield to absorb 6 damage].
The blow spins him on his feet, and when he comes around he leads with his bright sword [1d20=13] hacking into the broad gullet of the monstrous thing for [2dd=6,5] 8 hit points.
By now Desmond/Mondes has scampered as wide as he dares tumbles at it with a daring roll under those perilous swinging fists [1d20=2] but he can't get near enough to worry it.
Ulric lands on the dais with a thump amid the unfolding action. Guntrum is nearing the bottom of the rope. Dorgan is near the top of the rope.
Dieter has 5/17 hit points. Gustave has 2/14 hit points (or 8/14 if he sacrifices his shield).

Ulric looks at the animated mass of earth in awe.
"Such power," he whispers.
Focusing his own power, Ulric watches for an opening then unleashes his magic at the beast.
OOC: If Ulric has a clear shot he will cast Anthracite Sufferance at the creature. Otherwise he will cast Infinitesimal Summon to call forth the vermin of the cellar to distract the beast.

Guntrum readies sword and shield, and heads for the creature's left flank with hopes of dealing the beast a wound to its left leg or hamstring to take it down, if such things have hamstrings.

"Oh hades!" Olaf Brits out as he hears the combat going on below, "I knew we should have just blocked this pit off!"
"To late for that now." Olaf strapes his shield over his back, sheaths his sword and starts Dow the rope saying to Jos, "Guard our back and I'll try to do something about whatever is going on down there."
Down the rope (like a dope) goes Olaf. He'll join the fight with sword and shield as soon as he can.

"Wa! merde!" says Gustave, as yet another shield is dashed from his very arm (bruises still there from the last time).
Shaking his head to clear it, he hunkers down into a defensive posture. Tongue somewhat chastened by the scathing attack, he still manages to hiss "The Gustave will not fall to a walking flower pot, you drunken dungheap. Now...en garde"

As Dieter is pushed back and Gustave hunkers down into his defensive crouch, Highbough sees the perfect opening to hurl the Ire Spear in a graceful arc over his friends' helmets and into the Man of Earth's throat!
