Ulric looks studiously into the cavern below and up to the trapdoor above.
"This is most intriguing. Perhaps someone was building a statue for some sort of shrine in the cavern below? Dorgan, help me with a few more of these crates. I will see if there are any recognizable parts. Perhaps a face or a symbol characteristic of some ancient god? We may be able to fetch a hefty sum for all of these artifacts; or at least the metal."
Ulric begins examining the pieces of metal, looking for clues for what they might be a part of, and searching his memory for any knowledge of such items.

"A hidden temple to some secret god?" Josiane murmurs; "I like this not."
Her skin begins to crawl with memories of her previous encounters in the tunnels below this town, and the thought of what might be lurking beneath the place in which she has been sleeping...

When Desmond/Mondes runs up for the grappling hook/rope, he takes a peak outside the back garden to see if he can visualize what a 20' diameter opening in the ground might look like. Then he looks at all of the surrounding manses to see if any of their neighbors might be likely to notice such a large and attention-getting opening in their back yard...
Then he hurries back down the hidden passage to the others and winds the grappling hook-end of the rope around the pedestal twice before catching the rope with the grappling hook. He drops the other end of the rope down the hole and looks about to see who wants to volunteer to go down first.
If nobody else is willing, Desmond will do so. He would hope the next person to descend has a light source with them, of course...

Highbough uses his gigantic brain to estimate, if the crates contain parts to build a statue/structure, approximately how large it would be... or perhaps many identical statues, an army of metal men.

Gustave steps around Highboughs throbbing planetoid and grabs the rope from a returning Desmond/Mondes. "Ill have that my good hobbit...err hobbits", he says, tying an end around his waist, "That is, unless you care to tag along? Six eyes are better than two as they say", he adds with a grin.
Making one end fast around himself, he procures a lantern from Highbough ("If I may, Sir?"), draws his sword, and sits himself upon the lip of the opening.
"I am afraid that you lot will have to do the lowering", he explains, "and you are welcome to attach yourself anywhere you can do so", he says to Desmond/Mondes.

While Desmond/Mondes is away, Dorgan opens a couple more crates with the crowbar so that Ulric and Highbough can examine the contents.
It is much of the same, dark cool blue-black steel plates. Most of them a featureless curves of varying size and concaveness. Only a one piece might be judged as part of a "gauntlet", and one other as, possibly, half of a large helmet.
Even the reckognisable parts are mostly smooth surfaced. They bear no inscriptions or prominent features. From what the two wise fellows can ascertain, this "armour" if that is what it all amounts to, might be fit for something twice the size of a Man.

Distant echoes of a curious "clicking" sound reach Olaf's ears, perhaps from this tunnel, or that. But by the time he has a chance to turn his attention to it, the sound has already vanished...

Upstairs
Desmond/Mondes reaches Deiter's room where he grabs the grappling and rope. Mondes is still muttering complaints as they look out the window down into the back garden.
The grass is somewhat overgrown across the entire grounds, but there is no indication that it is anything other than an ordinary hillside.
The neighboring properties are perhaps 30 or 40 yards to either side, and positioned such that they have no casual sight into the garden. A nosy neighbour would have to be specifically looking in order to catch sight of anything going on in the back garden...

While the others are engaged in lowering Gustave and Dieter into the pit, Josiane will keep a close watch on the tunnel mouths/walls/ceiling, listening anxiously for the return of any clicking sounds...
